I used to see them back in the 80's at the Howard Street Tavern in Omaha. They always had the place packed! The only band I saw that played there that could keep the dance floor full until closing time. Thanks for posting this, it makes me feel thirty years younger!
I am glad to hear Maralie is still going strong! We used to love to go hear her. I hired her to play at Shotgun Sam's in Springfield. Please tell Maralie that the Cranium Brothers miss her (Jim and Jim)
For those who are interested the land that Red's used to be on is up for sale. It's the lot to the west of the Odd Fellows lodge on west Chestnut Expy. And for those who haven't been in Springfield in a coon's age, Reds has long since been torn down. :-(
It was a great place and for those who never had the chance to eat there, Red was exactly like he was in this video pretty much every day of the year. It is a classic video, but even without it, the song itself describes the place and the atmosphere there perfectly, with lyrical economy and humor. Why the place was torn down after it closed is a mystery to me. Springfield, Missouri is poorer for it.
I saw these guys "live" back in the day...I saw them at the free spring concert series at Shyrock auditorium at SIUC....they opened a can of audience whoop ass by opening up with that song damned trans am....frigging awesome roots rock and the singer and guitarist kicked butt.....god bless the morels....a fan in Maine.......
By the way...that's got to be the coolest guitar I've ever seen...the pistol guitar! I've got some footage of The Dog People on my page. Check it out for some more early 80s Springfield music!
I've been shooting a Documentary on the Dog People. Terry Cone sings in a few of the songs I recorded at their New Years Eve show. I'll be posting videos sometime.
Genius! I want everything they ever did or will do!

Wow, what a great memory! Used to see the Morells every time they came to the old Parody Hall in KC.
Even made a road trip to Springfield to see them play for their home town. One of the best bar shows I ever saw.
Long live Lou, Maralee, D Clinton and Rongo!

A really amusing video. RED's is a quirky natural setting. And that car? Infamous.

I dont know who made it but it was back when (early 80s) everyone thought they needed to a video to go with their record. Its cool ain't it?!
steinkampg 3 years ago
I believe it was shot and edited by Kevin Hudnell of Wavefront Video in Columbia Missouri. I used to intern for him back in college at U of Mo.
