As full supporer of the surge this has to be simply the worst explanation of what ocurred to bring about the strategy and luck had little to do with it.
Lemme get this straight, she teaches a course on Iraq, blames post-invasion failures on Rumsfeld even though SHE was in charge of post-invasion planning? AND she thinks Petraeus was in exile, but doesn't know he was picked because HE WROTE THE BOOK on counterinsurgency? What a twit
The bitch who caused 9/11 by preventing the only peron who knew of Bin Ladin's plan and network from investigating the U.S. Cole bombing; John O'Neil. This investigation would have proven the existence of the network, and radically changed the course of history.
I think she is absolutely right, much of the success of the surge is down to the selection of counter-insurgency specialist Gen. Petraeus to lead it. He demonstrated more guile in his thinking towards the problem. A different general with a more gung-ho war-fighting mentality would have been less successful.
Also, when she says "Occupiers have to believe that [the occupation] is for their benefit," I think she meant the occupied have to believe that the occupation is for their benefit.
If one considers the fact that draft dodgers, Cheney, Rumsfeld, & Wolfowitz, and a National Guard (draft dodger) "pilot", Bush, have any concept of military strategy have any inkling of war is absurd.
If you but 40,000 more police on the streets of LA or NYC, of course you'll see a decrease in violence. Remove them and crime will return. There has been no political reconciliation. We are no better off today than pre-surge. It will cost us lives & $3,000,000,000,000+ to pay for this blunder.
