Zakk played his at a concert, Steve at some MTv gig and Joe at an actual San Francisco giants baseball game - they all played to their audiences. You think Joe wasn't asked by the Giants and MLB to keep it short and sweet/simple?
@azkeyz zakk => buckethead. buckethead isnt even fun to listen to, makes your ears bleed like a fucking kid playing a robotic toy, and id put money it that zakk is actually faster then buckethead and hes probly the only player (with dimebag who died) that can go to from low E to high E and back safely
Wylde's is BRUTAL / Vai's is WHAMMIYING / Satch's was like Vai's but lame. I have to say Wylde had the most impressive one. Satch should have gone the other way, mellow clean tone, delays and volume swells and he would have nailed both the other guys.
Both Zakk Wylde and Steve Vai are my favorite guitar players. And I thought the most entertaining was Vai's because Satch didn't really add his own touches to it. But Zakk's was awesome
For all the Jimi lovers out there. Picture this. The 20 best guitarists all in a room behind a black curtain. Each one steps up to the mic and gets to play 3 minutes of their best stuff. If you had a room full of unbiased people just rating the play, then jimi (no doubt in my mind) would come in last. Now, remove the cover and you may have a different rating....ohh thats jimi hendrix. You dont have to be a virtuoso to know just the basic fundamentals of good play.
@TRobinson1971 and again, how are you gauging this? The musician who who can play 32nd notes with inverted tritone substitutions is the best because the other guys are not physically capable of doing this? When I was a 16 year old kid that stuff impressed me for about 6 months. Have you checked out Ornette Coleman or Coltrane or any other really great improvisers? Music is a serious ART form... again think metaphor ie context ie meaning in the playing and sound.
@brandonterzic ....Im gauging it on raw playing ability. Jimi had all the emotion in the world, but his playing ability wasnt on the same level with his emotions. Just because someone sings with emotion doesnt make them a great singer.
@TRobinson1971 So basically what your saying is that the most important thing in music is technical facility? The musician that can play the things that are the "hardest" to play is superior? By that rational then all Flamenco players are the best, because that style of guitar has the most demanding physicality, much more than playing the electric guitar with a pick. If athleticism on the instrument is paramount for you then great, knock your self out.Check out Paco De Lucia, nobody touches him
@brandonterzic ...no, Im not basically saying that at all. Others arent as caught up in the emotion that jimi seems to be selling as you are. We are speaking of his playing ability...not his stage presence, which to you trumps all. For me his playing ability lessons his presence....for you it strengthens it. U are just easier pleased than I...if someone is calling you the greatest guitar player, then u better show me on stage how u play. His presence is good. His play notta
@TRobinson1971 Man, I am obviously not communicating very well, because you are not getting what I am trying to say. If you want to continue this discourse, drop me a line at brandonterzicatbrandonterzic com, having character limits on thoughts is not great--- there is a lot to talk about with this--- and it could lead to some interesting insights--- if you don't have the time or energy--- than cool--and thanks for being civil with what you have been writing- rare these days
@TRobinson1971 "his playing ability wasnt on the same level with his emotions" doesn't make any sense. They go hand in hand. What you call "technique" is missing the mark. Technique is the ability to translate and evoke what you are hearing and imbibing in the moment. Its not quantifiable in terms of good or bad, fast or slow etc. The "greatest" thing is often the simplest. If a guy could play all instruments in the world virtuosically what difference would it make if he had nothing to say?
everybody has their own preference of style and axe slingers , mine has to be zakk wylde , reason for this is vai and satch are both legends in their own rights for slashing pick trick and speed but for a full on assault of 6 sting diversity and talent zakk has to win hands down for me.
No offense to any comments here, but music is NOT a competition. Zakk, Steve, and Joe would tell you it's about expression and the sharing of a mutual love of the art. To inspire each other and to enjoy the results of that inspiration. There are no champions...just those who speak to our souls more than others.
You can tell Joe didn't put much of a custom touch to it, but I know, as well as the rest of you that Joe will out-pick Steve and Zakk straight to their graves... I think he kept it original cause he saw how both of the others completely fucked up the national anthem with their wild renditions. I love metal but damn... there's a fine line between reciting the national anthem and destroying it. At least Satch knows that. =)
ya gotta remember jimi didn't have near the equipment heck he was playing with a cord back in 1969 zakk steve and joe all had cordless not to mention all the other goodies we got today they all have thier own style I was kinda partial to zakks style
Jimi was good but not the best, why can't you people understand that? He wasn't that skilled. He was a show man, and that's why he's so popular. What a bunch of sheep you are. You're only saying Hendrix is the best because other people who also know nothing about guitar playing do
@villadavid4ever My friend, there is a difference between "skill" and artistry. The function of music is to express, evoke, heal, and ascend. How "skilled" you play the instrument is arbitrary in relation to what emotional affinities you are establishing with the listener and with your self. All of 3 of these guys are incredible players, but Jimi's version is so far beyond there's in its scope and its vitality. To me these versions are just exhibitions and re-hashings of what Jimi did.
@brandonterzic ...you seem to miss the point of the criticism. You have trouble separating popularity from raw playing ability, which is the point. Tim Tebow is a very popular QB...maybe the most popular in the NFL right now...does that make him the best? You are the guy saying hes soooo popular and Im the guy saying "true, but his ability is in the lower echelon"....can you understand that analogy?
@TRobinson1971 No, I get your point very clearly, and I don't have a problem seperating popularity from raw playing ability. I am not sure if your really paying attention to what I wrote to you though, or maybe I am not explaining myself well enough. The argument here is that we both qualify "raw ability" in 2 different ways. If you re-read my last comment I gave you my definition. It seems music means something totally different to you than to me. Different strokes for different folks-- peace
@villadavid4ever Also, in case you didn't know, both Vai and Satriani have basically said that Jimi was the "greatest" guitar player ever, and both of those guy's opinions carry weight.
@brandonterzic So what? Everybody can just say big classic names.
Skill is arbitrary? Artistry is too, then. Jimi might be one of the most influential, but influential but that doesn't make him the best. Also, I care don't care about Vai and Satch's opinions. Some other good guitarists can say different things.
@villadavid4ever Your missing the point. Music is an ART form, its self expression. There are Pygmies in Central Africa that play hand made harps with one string that will tear your heart out, and it has nothing to do with how well they are able to execute difficult passages. Jimi's playing is unquantifiable, because his playing was coming from a highly developed relationship with sound and what was going on around him, socially, politically, and spiritually.
@villadavid4ever You hit the nail on the head. It is very popular to say Jimi Hendrix even if they havnt seen him play. I am critiquing his technique and playing ability....not how a bunch of people on acid liked his style.
@blackgarda8 JImi had a point to make and it wasn't "look what I can do" Jimi was relating blind patriotism to the pointless Vietnam war. The exact opposite of what these guys are doing. All due respect to them.
You can't compare Zakk with joe satriani and steve vai, is different styles, but in the instrument and etc... zakk is out of the question steve vai and satriani are today the bests guitar players in the world, but they can't be considered because they are also compositors
everyone i have recieved e=mails from say all these guitarists are technically better than hendrix i sure don't hear it and why does everyone copy jimi's tunes to me hendrix will remain on the top were he belongs jimi not only could play the guitar better than all of them but he was a better showman period!!!!
Zakk's was better just because it was in concert and not on a baseball diamond. Plus, Zakk is just a bad ass to begin with. That never hurts. But holy shit, enough with this song being played on electric guitar. It's become a total cliche' and is just stupid anymore.
joe satriani was the only one that didnt add to the song, In this case zack and steves addition to our national anthem really didnt fit. Dont change the national anthem!!!!!!!!! joe won by far on that aspect alone
The American National Anthem sucks, this guitar playing's awesome but in my opinion, U.S National Anthem's really lame. I mean come on! "oh say, can you see?" The Russian Anthem is MUCH Better! And i'm Swedish.
Satriani: most tasteful. We all know you're skilled. Do the song its justice. If you are American you have to agree with me. National Anthems a big deal. NOW GO HAVE A BEER!
Say what you want about Jimi... If it wasn't for him we wouldn't be talking about this. Ask either of these guys and he's on the top, or at least amongst the top of their list of guys who made them pick up a guitar. And for even thinking of playing their on version of this song. Those who don't agree and I know there are a few, Let's hear your expression of this classic piece.
people who say hendrix couldn't play for shit or had crap tone I don't consider guitar players asses as even if you don't like his playing, look, sound or what ever it may be a good guitar would no he knew how to play a guitar People think he had crap tone I think as alot of cds you would see in cd shops were poorly recorded concerts or before he was famous with little richard all on the shelf to make a quick quid off you .
@rkroemer Like I don't like megadeath as to me all the song have to many solo that sound the same, chromatic runs and fast but I recognize they are a good heavy metal band and at the forefront of thrash metal
@rkroemer : Yer talkin' about all those TONE DEAF stooges eh? Ya, I know quite a few of those. Try jamming with a person who is TONE DEAF. Seriously, you feel like jamming the axe through their ear and out the other...or mine.
@rkroemer Anyone that says Hendrix couldn't play for shit and had crap tone is a fucking idiot that doesn't know shit about guitar or music for that matter, so who gives a shit what they say.
Morons, Hendrix was a paratrooper in the Army before becoming famous. It was a symbol for a tattered America. Listen to his live stuff when he plays Machine Gun, he dedicates it to the soldiers. Hendrix' tone kicked ass!
You are high if you think Vai is better. Wylde.. a very close second Satriani and 3rd the kid in his basement playing the star spangled banner with a Fender Squire.
@jesusdelriodeaguilar As much as I love Joe, Steve gets this one in my book. He throws in crazy stuff to spice it up, but it's not a wall of noise. Not to mention his phrasing is great. I do like Zakk, but I was unimpressed with this one.
Vai is my favorite guitarist but his wasn't all that good. Zakk's had too much effects to even realize he was even playing the star spangled banner. Satriani's wasn't anything special it was just the regular SSB. So I'm gonna have to say 1.Vai (only cuz he ended it good) 2. Wylde
i like all of these guitarists....but none of them were that great at all. There is so much you can do with this song...I expected a lot more from all of them.
I love all the Hendrix fans that feel the need to mention his rendition just because they think they should....Jimis rendition of the SSB is the worst ever...out of tune out of tone and completely sloppy....he just made up crap as he went along that is less than superb. Ill never get the ones that cry for jimis rendition...they have probably never even heard it....its horrible.
@TRobinson1971 Out of tune and sloppy? What? It was a great rendition as far as it goes. However, Hendrix version of this song have a special place in time, and carry quite the different meaning from someone trying to do the same thing in this age. That's what makes it special, but I'm certain there are stupid kids nowadays that just cry for it since it's Jimi Hendrix.
@rathil....I see your point. Hendrix rendition was purposely unpatriotic and meant to chop up the song in front of an unpatriotic crowd that cheered his botched rendition. It is famous because it was done at Woodstock, but his rendition of the song is a train wreck....it doesn't sound like the SSB which was his intention. Hendrix in my opinion is perhaps the most overrated guitarist of all time. Jimis version of the SSB was basically giving the finger to those currently serving
@TRobinson1971 Morons, Hendrix was a paratrooper in the Army before becoming famous. It was a symbol for a tattered America. Listen to his live stuff when he plays Machine Gun, he dedicates it to the soldiers. Hendrix' tone kicked ass!
Exuse , but all you faggots who say that the USA is AMERICA are all a bunch of idiots, retarded people, if you made your homework correctly, AMERICA IS A CONTINENT!, the continent COLON discovered was AMERICA, not USA, , amercans , are like europeans, from DIFERENT COUNTRYS!! I am from chile CHILEAN, but also from the CONTINENT AMERICA! , People from USA are from USA,and ARE FROM CONTINENT AMERICA! DO YOUR HOMEWORK IDIOTS
i love all the guitar player here, im a very huge fan of satriani , i really like the zakk wylde version, blow my minds, all are gods, but Jimi is the number one
i am a huge satriani fan...but steve vai won this round hands down...the fact that he played with such emotion and kissed the guitar at the end showed his love for our country to me....steve's version can't be topped
@doodleguitarist jimi hendrix does not touch anything he is not the best guitarist in the world like this fucking site and magazines it is so bad that a guitar does not play anything and you will say that I'm jealous of him even to me because I also wanted to be famous longer being a good guitarist
@doodleguitarist ...Thats hilarious....if anyone came on and did the Hendrix version, then you would call them a horrible guitarist. Some just think its cool to say Jimi Hendrix....he was horrible.
@metalliczombie ....ummm take your pick. What is so impressive about Jimi?....he is doing nothing that a million guitarists cant do also. He botched the song purposely and its people like you who praise him for a great rendition....he did not intend for it to be good at all....if he was alive he would be laughing at all the attention. Listen to the song real close....there is nothing in it that is brilliant about his rendition. He is not even in tune with himself....lmao.
@TRobinson1971 The impressive part more than anything was the that he did it period. And not to mention... He did it first! Of course with technology today, as oppose to over 40 years ago, anyone can do it. It was a symbol of the times. And now it's a tradition. Would they have come up with the concept, if he hadn't done it? Possibly. But appreciate the creative mind and render credit where it is due.
@psykomystro ...He did what? What did he do? bends and slides out of tone and out of tune with himself and the song?...what did he do that was so revolutionary that wasnt done before him and after him? He intended to make a mockery of the song in front of a crowd of mostly war protestors that were anything but patriotic....they cheered his mockery of the song and thus it became famous. I will give him credit for an attempt to play....but hardly a revolutionist.
lol... a million people can play Johnny B good, does this make them the start of rock'n roll? a million people can drive a ferrari. does it make them inventors of a sportcar?? Jimi was the creator, the first person to mix heart and soul and his balls into guitar music.
@TRobinson1971 Obviously with the technology back then there isn't a single guitar player that ever existed that could stay in tune. Not with the way Jimi bent the fuck out of the notes and with the way he used the tremolo. I like Jose Feliciano's version and Marvin Gaye's version too....want to make fun of them? You can't, because like Jimi, they're unique which is something no metal player can say. Get out of your mother's basement and take some music lessons.
1.Zakk Wylde shouldn't be in this video
2.Jimi did not kick their ass, satch and vai are amazing players, Jimi was just more popular because his music wasn't as abstract

joe satriani was the only one that didnt add to the song, In this case zack and steves addition to our national anthem really didnt fit. Dont change the national anthem!!!!!!!!! joe won by far on that aspect alone

ok, Vai's version is obviously superior here. But had they known they were up against each other, I think we would've seen a different result.

AnthonyGodDamnRuiz 2 months ago
Vai is my favorite guitarist but his wasn't all that good. Zakk's had too much effects to even realize he was even playing the star spangled banner. Satriani's wasn't anything special it was just the regular SSB. So I'm gonna have to say 1.Vai (only cuz he ended it good) 2. Wylde

i like all of these guitarists....but none of them were that great at all. There is so much you can do with this song...I expected a lot more from all of them.
TRobinson1971 2 months ago
I love all the Hendrix fans that feel the need to mention his rendition just because they think they should....Jimis rendition of the SSB is the worst ever...out of tune out of tone and completely sloppy....he just made up crap as he went along that is less than superb. Ill never get the ones that cry for jimis rendition...they have probably never even heard it....its horrible.
TRobinson1971 2 months ago
@TRobinson1971 Out of tune and sloppy? What? It was a great rendition as far as it goes. However, Hendrix version of this song have a special place in time, and carry quite the different meaning from someone trying to do the same thing in this age. That's what makes it special, but I'm certain there are stupid kids nowadays that just cry for it since it's Jimi Hendrix.
rathil 1 month ago
@rathil....I see your point. Hendrix rendition was purposely unpatriotic and meant to chop up the song in front of an unpatriotic crowd that cheered his botched rendition. It is famous because it was done at Woodstock, but his rendition of the song is a train wreck....it doesn't sound like the SSB which was his intention. Hendrix in my opinion is perhaps the most overrated guitarist of all time. Jimis version of the SSB was basically giving the finger to those currently serving

@doodleguitarist ...Thats hilarious....if anyone came on and did the Hendrix version, then you would call them a horrible guitarist. Some just think its cool to say Jimi Hendrix....he was horrible.
TRobinson1971 1 month ago
@TRobinson1971 Well then who the fuck do you think is better?
metalliczombie 1 month ago
@metalliczombie ....ummm take your pick. What is so impressive about Jimi?....he is doing nothing that a million guitarists cant do also. He botched the song purposely and its people like you who praise him for a great rendition....he did not intend for it to be good at all....if he was alive he would be laughing at all the attention. Listen to the song real close....there is nothing in it that is brilliant about his rendition. He is not even in tune with himself....lmao.
TRobinson1971 1 month ago
@TRobinson1971 The impressive part more than anything was the that he did it period. And not to mention... He did it first! Of course with technology today, as oppose to over 40 years ago, anyone can do it. It was a symbol of the times. And now it's a tradition. Would they have come up with the concept, if he hadn't done it? Possibly. But appreciate the creative mind and render credit where it is due.
psykomystro 1 month ago
@psykomystro ...He did what? What did he do? bends and slides out of tone and out of tune with himself and the song?...what did he do that was so revolutionary that wasnt done before him and after him? He intended to make a mockery of the song in front of a crowd of mostly war protestors that were anything but patriotic....they cheered his mockery of the song and thus it became famous. I will give him credit for an attempt to play....but hardly a revolutionist.
TRobinson1971 1 month ago
@TRobinson1971
lol... a million people can play Johnny B good, does this make them the start of rock'n roll? a million people can drive a ferrari. does it make them inventors of a sportcar?? Jimi was the creator, the first person to mix heart and soul and his balls into guitar music.
wimfossilio 1 month ago
@TRobinson1971 Obviously with the technology back then there isn't a single guitar player that ever existed that could stay in tune. Not with the way Jimi bent the fuck out of the notes and with the way he used the tremolo. I like Jose Feliciano's version and Marvin Gaye's version too....want to make fun of them? You can't, because like Jimi, they're unique which is something no metal player can say. Get out of your mother's basement and take some music lessons.
