@chechnya It can cause the reaction not to be complete. If you don't drain off enough glycerin, it usually just gets washed out, but can cause an emulsion.
@SheisseFicken The waste water will have some trace amounts of Biodiesel, oil, methanol, but will mainly have soapy water in it. It's benign enough that our local waste water treatment facility allows us to dump ours down the drain (we had it tested & they looked at the results & gave us the go-ahead).
The Glycerin will have lots of methanol, and some catalyst, glycerin, soap, and some unreacted oils. It's bad enough that you can't put it down the drain. We turn our Glycerin into soap.
@SheisseFicken The waste water isn't too bad. We had ours tested once with a local waste water treatment facility & they gave us the go-ahead to put it down the drain. The glycerin on the other hand is still somewhat caustic and contains methanol. Because of this it needs to be disposed of safely. We make soap out of some of ours or take it directly in barrels to a local waste water treatment facility.
we need to start questioning the need for fuels. Do we really need fuel operated machines to live and exist? THe short answer is no. start to question what you are actually gaining from having machines that run on fuel.
@Begbucks Yes. We offer a bigger one called a BioPro 380 that makes 100 gallons every batch. With an INCOSEP installed you can make up to 100 gallons every 22 hours
Time is money. considering the cost of this unit, plus the labor, chemical supplies, and time it takes to make diesel with this unit, it is probably cheaper just to fill up at the gas station. Time is money.
@johnny102marvin If UtahBiodesel numbers are correct and at a current price of 4 dollars a gallon and maximum production capacity of 50 gallons a day, that works out to a profit of 2.75 dollars per gallon (taking the higher cost of production numbers), or about 137 dollars a day in profit, or about 4000 a month, that's not bad money esp considering the machine is doing all the work.. setup 10 and your in business.. we'll thats if u can sell the stuff..
@Thecarguy24 It depends on what you're paying for methanol, for catalyst, and sulfuric. But if your oil is free, methanol is about $3/gal, and catalyst is about standard pricing, it runs anywhere from $0.90/gal to $1.25/gal.
@Thecarguy24 Depends on your methanol & chemical costs and if you're paying for the oil. We find that it's between about $0.75 - $1.25/gallon in our set up.
@graydonblair We found that on our 190, even if the water content in the WVO was high, by using the 190 with just heat on for a day, it was very effective in removing enough water to make the WVO usable. As far as within the right titration, we put some pretty nasty WVO through it and always produced quality fuel. These are great machines!
What happens if you add too much/not enough of any of the chemicals or don't drain enough glycerin?

Exactly how toxic is the glycerin and waste water, and how do you go about disposing of it? Can you use lye made from wood ash?

You can also throw it on a manure pile or add it to an anaerobic digester. I believe you can use lye from wood ash, but I've never tried it.

can you add oil that has particles or does it need to be strained through like 10 micron filter
tatorchip16 8 months ago
@tatorchip16 It needs to be filtered. Preferably down to 400 micron.

Neat concept, Anything larger than 50 GPD (Gallons Per Day)

@graydonblair Or about 763 Gals. per week, still a rather diminutive denomination, but thanks.

you can use WVO with this?
bmtimv 2 years ago
Yep. It works great with WVO. Just has to be within the right titration and low in water content.
