Lyrics:Bom ba ba bom bom ba bom ba ba ba babom bom bom. Captain Barney Miller is going to Albertson ha hon's to buy a steak and some chicken. Going to Albert-ert-son-on-on-on -on -on-on-on Albertson's.
I miss the Twin Towers, I miss the 1970s, and I miss the time when prime time programming wasn't as lowbrow, unimaginative or repulsively cringe-inducing as it is today.
Whatever happened to the TV theme song? They need a resugence. And I don't want any of that MIDI digital/electronic crap pretending to be a real band jamming out either.
@djangledoobledangus You reminded me of the theme for "Sex and the City", which I like, but was obviously recorded from a MIDI soundset, possibly a Roland. Same for the drums on the theme for "Northern Exposure." I also would love the "full-length theme song" to make a return, but I know full well as long as it cuts deeply into precious commercial time, it's not gonna happen. BTW, "Barney Miller" is also one of my favorites, but I'm kinda sick of hearing this version.
@JoseBronxRican Yeah man it's a new era. I shouldn't knock MIDI it's a money saver for people who want to do big band stuff and can't hire "mercenaries." The Sex and the City theme is good but one of my female friends tried to insinuate that I was queer for even mentioning the show LOL. Big fan of the Quantum Leap theme. Also a fan of the Peter Gunn theme and other things by Mancini.
@WSenator1 I LOVE this theme to death. I love THIS version of it, which is in my MP3 collection. But there were FOUR to FIVE OTHER versions recorded for this show, YET EVERY single time this theme is represented, on video or CD or whatever, it's almost ALWAYS THIS version, and THAT'S what I'm sick of. There was no way of telling which version this was unless I VISITED it. And if you hadn't have opened your BIG mouth, I would never have come BACK to clarify what shouldn't have needed clarifying.
Two things: First, that theme is one of the coolest TV themes in TV history (only Baretta rivals it). Second, I saw an interview with Abe Vigoda in 2005. Like when they showed him answering questions, the caption read in big letters "Abe Vigoda" and underneath his name in smaller letters were the words "Yes, he's still alive". Christ, I busted a got reading that one!
Great show. Brings back memories of family tv time. Bonus points for keeping the VW commercial attached. For those of us time challenged we have car reference.
"Barney Miller" must have been (and still must be) one of the most underrated great TV shows of all time. You never heard much praise about it from the national media, and you still don't hear about it being ranked with the greats, as it should be. Whenever that great theme music would come on, and I'd sit down to watch it, it was almost like being part of a conspiracy!
I so badly wanted there to be a scene on "Life On Mars" where Keitel spits out his coffee and says, "Who made this stuff?" And an actor resembling Jack Soo says, "I did," and then actors resembling the guys from The Old One Two came out to help Gene, Sam and the rest on a case. It would have been an absolute scream. Heck, I would've settled for a bald guy with a lollipop saying, "Who loves ya, baby?" But Barney was on ABC, as was LOM, while Kojak was on CBS.
This is the short version of the opening heard in later years, I have posted a longer extended version rarely heard until the final seasons of the 1975-82 series.
My friends Dad was a policeman years and years ago and he surprised us all when he said that this was the most realistic cop show on TV. We were blown away.
Probably right. No "dirty harry's" no 'hero cops", just a bunch of working guys dealing with a tough job and making wisecracks about it. Your father is vey right. The look of the police station is dead on to NYPD precincts back then.
I am 13 and my dad told me it was a funny show. I agree. Well I turned on TV Land and it was 70's night. I just happened to catch a few episodes of Barney Miller. I would rather watch this than any other stupid TV show. I would rather watch this and MASH,but they don't ever play Barney Miller
Are we related? My thoughts to the T. I am hating tv more daily. However Americans are turning dumber by the second. Gotta see how many Reality tv hours they can rake up in a day. I am from the old school, I dig sitcoms, drama, and comedy.
Exactly I do not want to see High school reunions and people becoming 40 or even Extreme house makeover, I want the old shows back on TVLand including Welcome Back Kotter, this show, and Night court.
I'm 31 and would rather watch the goods that played on my monochrome tele, rather than what is out now. Hell The Munsters got axed again, for what? Remember how ultra cool F/X was when it launched. I miss Eight is Enough, Nanny and the Professor, Trapper John MD, and yes Pet Dept with Jeff Probst. They really had a knockout line up and look what it is now. King of the Hill is the salvation there. No wonder dvd sales are high...look what is offered when you hit the power button.
I tell you what DVDs and Youtube are my new Television. I don't watch it as much the only time I watch it hard if Ugly Betty (because of sexy America Ferrera), Scrubs, and films on Turner Classic Movies (the only channel that hasn't sold out, THANK GOD!)
This is the short version of the 1979-82 opening...the longer version has a key change at the end of the theme and the shots of the individual cast members last a few seconds longer.
It's about time somebody uploads a hi-def version, but otherwise...thanks for sharing!
