  • It's about time somebody uploads a hi-def version, but otherwise...thanks for sharing!

  • Ron Glass as Neil Degrasse Tyson

  • THIS is the version !! I wonder how many people were so inspired by this theme that they

began learning how to play a bass guitar ?

  • @4keysman I agree that THIS is the definitive version of the Barney Miller theme. My favorite.

  • A reaper in Supernatural sent me here X_x

  • Holy crap. How did Abe Vigoda outlive Steve? Seriously!

  • @weareclouds Abe is the Energizer Bunny in disguise.

  • I prefer this version of the theme.

  • @sickandtiredofmorons I agree. It's the best one.

  • Rest in Peace; Steve Landesberg who played Det.Sgt. Arthur Dietrich, passed away Monday 12/20/2010.

  • RIP, Steve Landesberg.

  • This Song has one SERIOUS KICKING BASS LINE...such and awesome..timeless theme song.

  • @Iccarus72 I think the Barney Miller TV theme inspired the bassline to "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac.

  • Lyrics:Bom ba ba bom bom ba bom ba ba ba babom bom bom. Captain Barney Miller is going to Albertson ha hon's to buy a steak and some chicken. Going to Albert-ert-son-on-on-on -on -on-on-on Albertson's.

  • Barney Miller is called I'm going to Albertson's

  • $119 a month? oh yeah .. best theme EVER!

  • Adam Carolla nailed it

  • This music should return in a commercial or somewhere

  • @3089280288 I agree, but it has to be THIS version...

  • I miss the Twin Towers, I miss the 1970s, and I miss the time when prime time programming wasn't as lowbrow, unimaginative or repulsively cringe-inducing as it is today.

  • @drshagstein and tv actuaaly went off the air

  • Whatever happened to the TV theme song? They need a resugence. And I don't want any of that MIDI digital/electronic crap pretending to be a real band jamming out either.

  • @djangledoobledangus You reminded me of the theme for "Sex and the City", which I like, but was obviously recorded from a MIDI soundset, possibly a Roland. Same for the drums on the theme for "Northern Exposure." I also would love the "full-length theme song" to make a return, but I know full well as long as it cuts deeply into precious commercial time, it's not gonna happen. BTW, "Barney Miller" is also one of my favorites, but I'm kinda sick of hearing this version.

  • @JoseBronxRican Yeah man it's a new era. I shouldn't knock MIDI it's a money saver for people who want to do big band stuff and can't hire "mercenaries." The Sex and the City theme is good but one of my female friends tried to insinuate that I was queer for even mentioning the show LOL. Big fan of the Quantum Leap theme. Also a fan of the Peter Gunn theme and other things by Mancini.

  • @djangledoobledangus You get props; Mancini's the MAN.

  • @JoseBronxRican Yeah dude. He was possessted by devil.

  • @JoseBronxRican - If you're sick of this version of the theme, then I have a suggestion: Don't visit it again!

  • @WSenator1 I LOVE this theme to death. I love THIS version of it, which is in my MP3 collection. But there were FOUR to FIVE OTHER versions recorded for this show, YET EVERY single time this theme is represented, on video or CD or whatever, it's almost ALWAYS THIS version, and THAT'S what I'm sick of. There was no way of telling which version this was unless I VISITED it. And if you hadn't have opened your BIG mouth, I would never have come BACK to clarify what shouldn't have needed clarifying.

  • @JoseBronxRican this the best one

  • If only you could still lease a new car for $119 a month...

  • I used to love this show , nothing beat the 70's sitcoms , sigh .

  • What musically uninclined moron wouldnt dig this jam ?

  • Holy cow - I think I saw Max Gail at a protest against cat litter on You Tube - "Cats Against Clay". Could that be him?

  • wow a vw for $119 a month,,,in three months at that price, with that model... you would own it lol

  • There are different versions to this opening but to me this one has the best guitar solo. Wonder who played it.

  • The most uncharismatic opening credits every

  • @SweatLaserXP - We must be watching different openings - I can't get enough of it, especially that funky bass line!

  • @WSenator1 Oh don't get me wrong, I love it

  • I have a VW Fox Wagon!

    So sweet

  • Dig that bassline.

I have a vague memory of my father passed out on the couch and this being on the television. Huh.

  • Wow, only $119 a month? I'll take it. (AC too!)

  • wish tha vw deal was still available

  • Remember when Harris wrote his book about the precinct? It was going to be made into a movie, and Barney wanted Roy Scheider to play him!

  • @El135o yeah and he was going to get Charles Nelson Reilly to play Dietrich ("are you still mad at me") haha I love this show

  • One of the coolest tv theme songs ever!

  • wojo was great in this one!!!!! classic comedy!!!

  • One of the best basslines EVER...

  • Anybody have the clip of the inmates singing Silent Night in the jail cell?

  • Two things: First, that theme is one of the coolest TV themes in TV history (only Baretta rivals it). Second, I saw an interview with Abe Vigoda in 2005. Like when they showed him answering questions, the caption read in big letters "Abe Vigoda" and underneath his name in smaller letters were the words "Yes, he's still alive". Christ, I busted a got reading that one!

  • Damn. I can't believe I missed that car sale.

  • Great show. Brings back memories of family tv time. Bonus points for keeping the VW commercial attached. For those of us time challenged we have car reference.

  • "Barney Miller" must have been (and still must be) one of the most underrated great TV shows of all time. You never heard much praise about it from the national media, and you still don't hear about it being ranked with the greats, as it should be. Whenever that great theme music would come on, and I'd sit down to watch it, it was almost like being part of a conspiracy!

  • the best theme song out there! Hands down....

  • Ah yes, the show voted most realistic by actual cops.

Barney Miller was great sh-t man.

  • WGN America is showing Barney Miller Sunday nights at 9 PM Eastern.

  • Cool bass intro love that tune.

  • great theme song!

    great horns, bass, and

    guitar solo...

    all under, like, 45 seconds!

  • Have any reruns of "Barney Miller" been shown anywhere since 9/11?

  • I so badly wanted there to be a scene on "Life On Mars" where Keitel spits out his coffee and says, "Who made this stuff?" And an actor resembling Jack Soo says, "I did," and then actors resembling the guys from The Old One Two came out to help Gene, Sam and the rest on a case. It would have been an absolute scream. Heck, I would've settled for a bald guy with a lollipop saying, "Who loves ya, baby?" But Barney was on ABC, as was LOM, while Kojak was on CBS.

  • This is the short version of the opening heard in later years, I have posted a longer extended version rarely heard until the final seasons of the 1975-82 series.

  • This is the OG theme that I remember. My old man was a cop and he loved this show. It captured the detached humor that cops had back then.

  • Any one know who did the title song, and if it's on cd somewhere?

  • Jack Elliot and Allyn Ferguson I believe. No idea about the CD thing

  • It's on one of those TeeVee tunes collections (I own 3 of these!)

  • Well, to be nitpicky, "TeeVee Toons", actually!

  • Great theme music. I used to love just watching the opening credits when I was kid.

    Thanks for the upload!

  • Great theme, and what a cast: a bunch of loveable looneys!

  • this one of the funkiest television themes of all time

  • @DString20

I believe you meant THE funkiest theme

  • I don't know, I kind of liked the old VW commercial. A Pinto commercial would have been an even nicer touch.

  • About the gay couple who stop by the 12th Precinct on this show. Combine "Exodus' and "international" and ".org".

  • Was the VW ad absolutely necessary??? Love this song btw. Great chops on the bass.

  • Barney Miller

    Hill Street Blues

    Hawaii 5-0

    S.W.A.T

are some of the most baddest theme songs

  • Looks like you left the camera running a bit too long LOL!

  • The theme to this show was kick azz and Hal Linden was a cutie!!! Steve Landesburg was funny as all get out!!

  • the laugh track was absurd though.

  • At times it was, but then I would laugh more because they seemed to find people with some serious laughs back then.

  • It was taped in front of a live studio audience (in the first and second seasons, at least).

  • that bassline is so wicked.

  • My friends Dad was a policeman years and years ago and he surprised us all when he said that this was the most realistic cop show on TV. We were blown away.

  • Probably right. No "dirty harry's" no 'hero cops", just a bunch of working guys dealing with a tough job and making wisecracks about it. Your father is vey right. The look of the police station is dead on to NYPD precincts back then.

  • Exactly. Waiting and poking fun at one another, shooting the shit, etc. Punctuated by events outside the office.

  • Great , great theme song!

  • Hal Linden is actually more of a Broadway actor and a great clarinetist.

  • The original opening

  • You can only watch this or WKRP for a month what do you chose? Fish or Loni Anderson?

  • BAILEY!

  • Barney Miller wins. Being from NY I can relate more to the characters

  • FISH! Abe Vigoda was always great in anything he was in from The Godfather to Barney Miller.

  • It's great to see the twin towers again as I remember watching this show from childhood.

  • barney miller, cheers, and all in the family

    period

  • My dad used to love that show. I started watching it with him and he got me liking it too. I even like "Hill Street Blues" too, because of my dad...

  • me too! :)

  • I am 13 and my dad told me it was a funny show. I agree. Well I turned on TV Land and it was 70's night. I just happened to catch a few episodes of Barney Miller. I would rather watch this than any other stupid TV show. I would rather watch this and MASH,but they don't ever play Barney Miller

  • I love Seinfeld, but I wouldnt even put that up with Barney Miller. It was the greatest sitcom ever.

  • Loved this show, not to mention that opening jam!

  • HAHA! A whole fleet of VW's on a race track!LOL!

  • i agree, they SHOULD bring this show to TV LAND instead of reruns of bonanza all day. bring back the 70's shows, like barney miller

  • I love this show why don't they bring back this show on TVLAND instead of TVLAND being a sell out.

  • Are we related? My thoughts to the T. I am hating tv more daily. However Americans are turning dumber by the second. Gotta see how many Reality tv hours they can rake up in a day. I am from the old school, I dig sitcoms, drama, and comedy.

  • Exactly I do not want to see High school reunions and people becoming 40 or even Extreme house makeover, I want the old shows back on TVLand including Welcome Back Kotter, this show, and Night court.

  • I'm 31 and would rather watch the goods that played on my monochrome tele, rather than what is out now. Hell The Munsters got axed again, for what? Remember how ultra cool F/X was when it launched. I miss Eight is Enough, Nanny and the Professor, Trapper John MD, and yes Pet Dept with Jeff Probst. They really had a knockout line up and look what it is now. King of the Hill is the salvation there. No wonder dvd sales are high...look what is offered when you hit the power button.

  • I tell you what DVDs and Youtube are my new Television. I don't watch it as much the only time I watch it hard if Ugly Betty (because of sexy America Ferrera), Scrubs, and films on Turner Classic Movies (the only channel that hasn't sold out, THANK GOD!)

  • This is the short version of the 1979-82 opening...the longer version has a key change at the end of the theme and the shots of the individual cast members last a few seconds longer.

  • Yeah this is definitely post-1979 due to the absence of Jack Soo.

  • Abe had his short lived spin off called "Fish:.

  • Did you see the even shorter lived one with Erik Estrada__"Fish & Chips"?

  • What happend to Abe Vigoda? Did he leave the show at some point?

  • Fish retired.

  • Finally! Someone has a different Barney Miller intro other than the S1 intro! Thanx!!!
