Actually, you've put your finger on the reason why the news has had a conservative bias for the last 30 years, and it's rarely discussed.

Most reporters DO have a liberal bias because that's the kind of background they come from. Being aware of that bias, however, caused them to be more sensitive to the charge of bias from the conservative camp, and they bent over backwards to accomodate them. They essentailly over-compensated.
