what was the point hiring Pat Smear? I got nothing against him but, they play just fine live when it was the three of them.

kurt really liked him, towards the end pat was the only person he was really talking to on the road. and he liked the energy he bought when he played.

and i think it was a conscious effort on kurt's part to bring some of the underground back into the band, as they had gotten so huge and everyone knows his feelings on that. but it's just my opinion, i haven't really read anything that confirms it.

well Kurt in interview said he had to much going on at one time while on stage singing, guitar, effects pedals, and it was just for touring purpose not for studio. Also Kurt wanted to show the he hadn't completely sold out, and bringing in pat smear added some underground credential to Nirvana but he's a shitty guitarist just look at the Unplug album pat smear sucks

@TheNewWorldMan69 kurt felt like he was kinda not doing his duties as a frontman and being able to connect with the crowd at shows. Pat Smear was a big relief for that, he also let kurt just focus on the real body of the song. Smear would put all the little intricate things into the performance while cobain would get more time to just rock out and have fun with the crowd, not having him have to worry about getting this, this, and this done before jumping around.

@TheNewWorldMan69 also yeh they did play fine live when they were playing nevermind songs and such...once In Utero hit there was alot more pedal use and feedbacks and so many things he had to do, he just needed another guitarist and someone like pat smear was pretty much perfect for the job - some old underground punk star that no1 that liked nirvana commercially would understand why/what in the fuck they are doing

Kurt wanted to concentrate more on singing and as he got deeper into heroin the other guys thought they would need the second guitar to cover kurt's parts. As it played out Pat ended up more out of it than Kurt and after a portion of the tour the band decided to turn Pat's guitar down in the mix as you can hear in this TV appearance.

@TheNewWorldMan69 i think their performances as a four-piece were definitely tighter. also two guitars, when you have a strong player, will often sound better (especially when pretty much all the studio recordings had two guitar parts, even on in utero). and pat added a lot of backing vocal stuff too.

it's actually a fender jag-stang, a guitar designed by kurt. it's discontinued last I heard but they did re-issue it in 2003 so they'll probably do it again.
