Insulting! you can tell that this chick has never taken the study of philosophy seriously. To say that the french are philosophical is a joke, they havent produced a good philosopher since Descartes (I know Sarte is super hip, but he doesn't really make any arguments). Try reading Nagel, Putman, Strawson, and Rawls if you want a taste of real contemporary philosophy, you will see that she does them no honor.
@jmitchusson erm... Foucualt, Deleuze, Derrida, Bourdieu, Baudrillard, Althusser, to name but a few! The French have produced some of the greatest philosophers of the twentieth century. Just because you may adhere to the analytical, rationalist approach that underpins Rawlsian philosophy, does not mean you have a right to lampoon other philosophers who do not. All philosophers should be valued insofar as they force us to provide a rebuttal, and hence reflect more deeply on our own position.

If one is dealing with metaphysics then there are lots of questions about reality, or the nature of things granted. But not all philosophers drill down that far on every subject. Insulting! you can tell that this chick has never taken the study of philosophy seriously. To say that the french are philosophical is a joke, they havent produced a good philosopher since Descartes (I know Sarte is super hip, but he doesn't really make any arguments). Try reading Nagel, Putman, Strawson, and Rawls if you want a taste of real contemporary philosophy, you will see that she does them no honor.

@jmitchusson erm... Foucualt, Deleuze, Derrida, Bourdieu, Baudrillard, Althusser, to name but a few! The French have produced some of the greatest philosophers of the twentieth century. Just because you may adhere to the analytical, rationalist approach that underpins Rawlsian philosophy, does not mean you have a right to lampoon other philosophers who do not. All philosophers should be valued insofar as they force us to provide a rebuttal, and hence reflect more deeply on our own position.

@uetzel Who tries to apply constructionist epistemology to the natural sciences? Clearly you have not truly read or understood the post-structuralists. Foucault does not view every science as equally problematic. His cynicism is reserved for the human sciences, and especially those whose object of analysis is the “figure of man”. And what makes you think that Rawl's rationalist epistemology, is more scientific, or more appropriate for the 'hard sciences', as you put it?

I wanted to clarify that I didn't really mean empiricism. I was speaking in a more broadly phenomenological sense. Since you are in artist I was giving my opinion that it seemed that how you experienced the world added more meaning to your life than addressing specific technical questions (not that those don't ever interest you.)

If one is dealing with metaphysics then there are lots of questions about reality, or the nature of things granted. But not all philosophers drill down that far on every subject. But I guess philosophy is "hot" because of the workout ones brain gets by pondering these questions, much of which aren't probably meant to be answered; but instead just meant to provide the questions themselves. It's cool because it's not superficial maybe???
