He had a knack for imagery, but, overall, over-rated. And as far as being interviewed, or being a public speaker, he mumbled his way through every engagement he ever had. Not impressed.
Proud Highway is my third preferred HST book because there is a powerful evolution of Thompson's writing style. I am grappling with the second monster volume, Fear and Loathing in America. He is a savagely eloquent philosopher.
I've read the late Mr Thompson, and i even wrote him once, asking for an autograph, in 1982. And he wrote back. Not some form letter, either, a real handwritten letter-i still have it. And anybody who's seen his scrawl in Steadman's paintings would recognize who wrote the short, friendly letter he sent back. HST was a wonderfully complex, brilliant, and genuinely hazardous person, but a true Kentucky gentleman to the end!
I was just reading this... Any Hunter fan should check this book out. His letters are funny and really show his talent. You really get into the young HSTs mind.
wow. so sad to see such ignorance. hunter was an activist and a reporter, writing what he saw in the 'stream of conscious,' a writing style, he was there when MLK got shot, rob kennedy got shot, and did everything in his journalistic power to keep america out of ignorance (or the ignorant, which in this case is your dumass). oh and he's dead, like he shot himself, so why r u directing your comment to him?and yes i point out what a stream of concious is to you cuz yea... you are a dumass.
good point about the late Dr. Thompson, may he rest in peace, trying to keep american readers informed about realpolitik in the usa. you're writing figuratively when you say 'he was there' when MLK (Memphis, 4/68) and RFK ['Bobby' not 'Rob' (LA 6/68)] were assassinated in 1968, yes? But HST didn't write 'stream of consciousness.' he composed quickly to meet deadlines. Read the late Hubert Selby's book Last Exit to Brooklyn. it's 'stream of consciousness' writing. and a method, not a style.
The Proud Highway (Saga of a desperate southern gentlemen) is the book that is the collection of these letters and it is possibly my favorite of all his writings.
this man is one of the Great Ones...this lovely and terrible planet has suffered awfully without his voice around to stand up to the powerful and misbehave in the corridors of power. the doc helped me find who i was in this big, nasty world as i came of age, and his writing encouraged me to always ask questions, no matter how many fits of rage and sleepless nights they caused. give em' hell, hunter, wherever you roam.
I've made this mans ideology at one point in my life as the basis for breaking the law - the law kicked my ass that time and I lived with other sweaty non white gits for a year - don't fuck with the law - the law is fuked and weird and shitty and queer - my bad for losign bt... Hunter was born at the right time in the right place to avoid the law
I'm not surprised he said Hemingway. Self indulgence is mere journalism more than writing. These guys simply took you to where they were. Steinbeck took you inside human emotion akin to Shakespeare through fiction, Steinbeck was the consummate writer.

You're no writer my friend, don't try and place you're words specifically to make yourself seem witty. You clearly aren't witty and clearly, i dislike you. I may be wrong here, but i feel like you're trying way to hard.

Just a few spot markups. Try and tighten this paragraph up. Make it sing and we can take it to the presses!
Hunter has more grace, originality and wit than most writers because he was defiant first, and "devious" second...or, rather, deviousness is something born out of those who possess a free spirit. He chose how to live and when to die, and you can't get more independent than that!!! His unparalleled vices saved him from oblivion.
Charlie Rose is an excellent interviewer; occasionally, he interjects a bit of himself, but it's a minor fault. Anyone who thinks interviewing -- or being interviewed -- is easy, has never done it. You don't know what you're talking about.
I agree... I think Rose does an excellent job of allowing Hunter to go off on random tangents while still trying to give the interview some sort of logical sequence.
The word genius should never be used to describe a load in the pants like Charlie Rose, or any interviewer. It is not rocket science. It's asking stupid questions. We just want to see the subject talk.
i think he was trying he's best, obviously he's not a very similar person to Hunter so it would of being difficult for him but i think he genuinly tried and from what i saw i think hunter respected that.
"getting away with it." If you had to do a synopsis about human nature and define "morals"- it's all about what you get away with. To a further point... "A man is as faithful as his options' - Rock.
on second thought, I'm guessing Charlie Rose wasn't really a fan or could accept Hunter's central philosophy : being real for real's sake. notice at the end of the interview, he sort of makes fun of Charlie's square-ness, used carsmanness.
you know what thhough - he was relaxed in this interview- not preassured to be Duke or perform infront of Fear & loathing kids- this was really interesting to hear - you can tell these two bounce of eachother well, that they have a history... thank you for posting
