... Okay, so instead of just getting married in a regular church, or having the traditional Japanese ceremony, they build a phony church and get a fake priest to marry them in said fake church... ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
It seems they go to great lengths to avoid spirituality.
I am quit positive the traditional Japanese wedding would be much more beautiful than this. When you really think about, it if what the guy is saying is true, it's all about artificial beauty something the wabi masters of the tea ceremony took out of fashion in Japan quite a while ago. Perhaps too ago long now a days!
I am quit positive the tradional Japanese wedding would be much more beautiful than this. Perhaps too ago long now a days!
Well I would not exactly call them imitation. These "are" marriage centers but most of them are not shaped like churches right off the bat. They are usually a whole compound that has a small church inside or outside and they usually have a christian minister to perform the wedding but you never really know what his qualifications are, or if he's legit. This one though just looks shady. I would never get married in something as gouty as that.
Isn't Christians supposed to be on the rise in Japan? It's traditionally been 1% with the exception of the old days- but after WW2 it's been slowly raising and in 2010 some poll i think Gallup said 8% of the population considers themselves Christan (mostly younger people)
It seemed like an awfully big jump, so i have a bit of doubt that it wasn't a misspoll- but you never know i guess.
OMD even though its for wedding places isnt there any churches or mosques in japan? there are really famous churches and mosques in tokyo. Interesting..
Maybe for people who want a different themed wedding. Some people where I live have Oriental themed weddings why can't that be reversed? There are tons of wedding themes to choose from, and this happens to be one of them.
hm interesting...but i suppose that's what most would think of when they think of their wedding...'traditional' in a church...disregarding the religion. and a lot of christian churches do look different architecturally, apart from the obvious cross, and I agree with isouro, I'm a catholic myself, and I don't find this offensive at all.
So how common are Christian churches in Japan? For example, how many would you expect to see in a large city? Is it about as rare as Buddhist temples in America are?
Food for thought for the ppl that are saying its offensive to christians.
What about the christians or religious ppl that by those buddah statues and paintings u see in all the interior decorating places, and use them as accessories in their homes?
Its both ways so dont be so quick go on the defense.
@isouro I think they're both kinda tacky. But that's just my opinion. Just saying some Christians think it's in bad taste to disrespect other religions symbols and I think you're right. If you're gonna be offended at one, you should be offended at both.
@isouro - You are so right when u say that. There's not a design magazine or a decorating show where they don't show someone with a humungous statue of Buddha sitting on their living room floor as a decor prop or even ones in their bathroom(it apparently has a "calming effect"on them.....lol.) ..how disrespectful is that!
I was actually offered a job as a fake minister. The most ridiculous thing was that they called my work (I'm an English teacher) and they asked if there was a foreigner who spoke English and Japanese.
Interesting. Even though religion can be great as a subject of interest, as a way of life, it seems to have become a subject of apathy in this day and age and rightfully so. With the history of death, destruction, cruelty and misery under it's belt, it's slowly becoming a shadow of what it use to be.
To be honest, it really doesn't look like an authentic church! At least not the ones we have here, anyway. Mostly ours are gothic, which are very ornate but kinda ugly and depressing if you ask me.
I'm guessing the ones in Australia look quite different to ours... does it look like an Australian church?
@Twiggyay Some of them are, but some are just bleak. European Gothic Churches are wonderful, the ones where I live (The UK) aren't as pretty, in my opinion.
it's a shame that a lot of different cultures are trying to imitate what white blonde people are doing nowadays, whether it's drugs, rap music, or weddings. I think the Japanese culture and customs are beautiful- why ruin it ?
@TheNintend0Channel - i don't think it's cuz ppl wanna be white or pass of as white in the eyes of other ppl or even themselves...most girls are infatuated with the idea of a white dress wedding...there's just something romantic and dream like abt it.....i'm one of 'em and i'm not christian. if i marry someday, i would obviously get a traditional wedding(acc to my own culture) but i would also love to wear a white dress and that's where the whole church thing comes into the picture.u get me?
@NiKo55BeLiC probably because they don't have hoards of willing drones to throw money at it's construction. like the Christian church does i believe it's called tithing? such bullshit...what a cult.
i bet they get married on a sly (dont tell there parents) coz i know japanese / chinease parents . . . . theyd slap the crap out of them if they had a white wedding lol, no offense its just most japanese / chinease parents are very strict : P
When I bring my Japanese friends into one of the huge catholic churches they are amazed how quiet and peaceful they are. They like all the ornaments and carved woodwork. I don't ask what they think about a guy nailed on a cross as the center peice. They have catholic churches in Tokyo I went to one in the late 60's.
No church bells ): I used to live by 2 churches and they both had church bells played twice a day. Funny how many people in that neighborhood weren't neighborly. Religion is overrated.
While I don't really care, I can see how this could offend a lot of people. I say, let them do whatever they want. Who are we to tell them what they can and can not do for a wedding.
@arhamus They probably just want to get married in a church because they're fascinated by Western wedding customs, how is that even kinda discriminatory?
@arhamus - i don't think it's discrimination against Christians...if anything it's a compliment because brides are saying they find christian weddings to be beautiful and would like to experience it for themselves...they're celebrating the most important day in their lives at a church..that's gotta be a compliment!!!

Ugh, "Western-style" weddings...
I was recruited to be a flower girl for one during my family's year there because of my lovely whiteyness.
Japan has a wonderful culture of its own. I don't know why so many people feel the need to make ugly imitations of "Western" culture to replace it.
