You are all being fooled by this fair trade business. Do you really think it goes to help those poor farmers from the third world countries. most of them are illiterate and get robbed by the higher powers in the business chain. Believe me thats where the money goes !The world of agriculture is monopolised and ruled by huge multinationals that dont give anything away. And even if they do feel benevolent, they know themselves it will never reach the poor farmer.
So, this one wants to tell us that over half of the people don`t give a damn making a losing deal?? How is that related to Fair Trade for poor countries?
emmypickle8 if everyone would have been as smart as you we wouldnt have been able to change anyone's lives and 10% extra 4 someone can pay for a whole dinner! Carry on you smarty
fairtrade is a load of bullshit. I agree with it in principle, in fact I think it's a very good one, however I seriously do not believe it works out in reality. it is merely a way for middle class westerners to feel better about themselves
if people think that paying extra just so some poor sod can only get 2p more while supermarkets line their pockets need to pull their heads out their arses
but what the hell, maybe the extra 2p will change a life, but it ain't gonna change the world
@emmypickle8 a premium of 40p-55p on a pound of coffee for any company can nearly double to income of a farmer in Guatemala, who earns less then $2000 a year. that's certainly a lot more than "middle class westerners feeling better about themselves."
@emmypickle8 Your are absolutely right ! I promise you that extra 2p never gets to the farmer. It goes to the currupt officials higher up the chain. I know, I have seen how the system woks. Those officials( on behalf of the large multinationals) then go back and bully the farmer into selling their produce at an even lower price. Where is the justice in that?
Please take an economics course or two before thinking yourself so self-righteous to support fair trade. Fair trade does not make everyone better off. Free trade does. Society as a whole benefits from free trade while only a handful of people benefit from fair trade. This is the case in developed and developing countries.
I myself have a Phd in Business and Economics - I consider my opinion non "self-righteous" and informed. Free trade is great, for one party. However Fairtrade principals favor both parties, and do not "price fix". FT premium is what gives the producers the extra money for community projects, and it is a minimum price (based on market value) the product is bought at. Demand for cocoa for example, will not decrease in the US due to 10c price increase, but that 10c makes an awful lot of difference
it's just too bad that such a small part actually goes to the producers and most of the premium goes to the middlemen. I desperately want fair trade that is fair for the consumer as well, one that charges premium without overcharging the consumer.
minimum wage is theoretically the source of unemployment. without minimum wage laws, all firms would be willing to hire workers at a wider range of wages. the labor market would finally reach an equilibrium.
In theory communism also works. The problem with communism is that it depends on having a government that won't abuse its power. The problem with unfettered free trade is that it depends on the wealthy businesses not abusing their power. The labour market will never reach an equilibrium as long as businesses can employ people for less than it takes for them to survive and get away with it because it the workers are not visible to the consumers.
This is genius!

@bemusedcapybara $2000 a year in Guatemala sounds low, but they have a much lower cost of living there

they'e only doing it becuase they think the pound is fake.

fairtrade is very unfair. Only 10% of the extra paid by the consumer goes to the farmer.

...to a struggling breadwinner in Ghana.
FT also ensures harmful production chemicals are banned, and workers are given more benefits.
Open your mind a little, think outside the text book of the humanity which does matter, moreso than economics.

Fair trade is just legal price fixing.
Do u support price fixing?

It's not price fixing. It's setting a minimum wage. Do you support a minimum wage?
