@TheZosoOverlord 2 to 3 hours a day, 2 or 3 days a week, for a couple of months to get one to eat from your palm. To get one to eat from a handheld feeder could happen the first day you try or never. Take a feeder from the position it is hanging (where hummingbirds have been using it) and stand as close to the original spot as possible, hold the feeder away from your body and one will visit the feeder if you can stand perfectly still. They are afraid of any movement.
They must constantly feed or else they starve to death..their metabolism is that fast. To me, they are almost like little faeries or something. They are also extremely territorial and aggressive; I've seen them chase hawks away from their territory. They are too cool! I have a really nice tat of them with Morning Glories on my backside hip. I went in for a medical exam and the doctor even thought it was great (& you know they see tons of tats!); she had her assistant come in and look!
They produce a lot of air as the wings beat many times per second. Yes it can be felt when they are close to you. You can also see plants blowing around as they hover to eat nectar from the plant.
The feeders with the bulb containers let wasps and other insects drink from the feeder as well, and they are only thwarted by one of those pan-like feeders, like I have.
i really liked the video....it's so funny how people are so quick to say it's not real....some people always have something negative to say....oh well. The video is great - keep it up!
The most used solution is one part sugar (20%)and four parts water (80%). If it is slightly stronger that is OK, but don't let it be any weaker than 20%sugar. I have been told up to 25% sugar is actually ok and will not hurt the hummers, but I still try to keep mine right around 20% (one cup of sugar and four cups of water)
Great! - I bought a feeder a month ago, and made some sugar water up but they would not touch it, didn't know if I had a good mix. Is it recommended to keep a regular seed bird feeder in a different location than the hummingbird feeder, this maybe another reason no humbirds are around. Thanks for the recipe. Oh, I also read to change out the mixture by the 2nd week, I guess it can spoil if not used.
Christine, I change my hummingbird food every two or three days and I only make enough to last about a week, which is stored in the fridge. If you leave food in the feeders too long and it spoils, the hummers will find a food source elsewhere. I keep my hummingbird feeders on the deck and backyard bird feeders near the back fence. I can't say it is necessary to do that, but I like it that way.
I have hours of video and hundreds of photos featuring this hummingbird. He is as real as you or I and there have been many people witness him eating from handheld flowers, feeders and my palm. Visit my website (e-hummingbirds) to see photos.
Thanks for the positive comments! Hummingbirds are amazing little creatures that God has provided to make this a better world. Please view my other hummingbird videos here at youtube and visit my website (e-hummingbirds) to see many photos of hummingbirds and more of God's creations.
I studied Hummingbirds 1 year in school and took up Agri-culture. I saw allot of pictures of albino animals and I forgot wasn't there a picture of a white hummingbird? there amazing birds! how did they get so close to you? & what's the best way to c-them in your yard? we would see 1 or 2 & some people we know would see allot of them. :)
Flowers and feeders are the keywords. Try to have flowers that hummers like and keep the feeders clean with fresh food. Most of the handheld flowers I use in the videos are Salvias, Weigela, and Bee Balm from home.
There are true Albino Hummingbirds and one of my slideshows has a white hummingbird (not a true Albino) Visit e-hummingbirds to see my photos.
Thanks... :) Do you know what makes them stay away? if there hawks/grackels (A certain wood on a bird house for wrens will attract grackels. Grackels look like small crows w/ shiny green heads.) I saw on a nature program that Hummingbirds will really fight eachother.
Cool -- our's buzzes my head and shoulders --

That is so very cool! We just got into feeding ours. How long did it take to get them to come that close and feed from your hand?

what was the chirping about?

Chirping is just a normal thing for a hummingbird to do. That last part is in slow motion and the sound is not exact.
