I am with this Unit. First the Aircraft is a dark green not black. second they use a pink paint during fire season because there is another aircraft that flies over all these other helicopters called the observer aircraft. The observer aircraft needs to know who they are talking to and they are assigned a number. the pink paint shows up the best. trust me we have tried other colors.
@pac47man Pretty much after seeing the 60 and the chinook that day I have wanted to fly every day since. Working on getting in with UNR and seeing if im capable. One day soon hopefully..
@Lukester132 Having actually worked on the assembly line that builds them I can safely say you are wrong. They might build a few small sub-assemblies, but not the whole deal.
they use the pink lettering for identification during military aid missions at least the corp does with our 53's if they need to use them for firefighting or whatnot
I work at a helicopter repair facility and I have been on the heliport with one of these things airbourne. I think it's about a 70MPH downdraft coming off these things.
sometimes a chinook will come do some traing ing at the airport i fly from and when the land we have to tie the planes down cuz the chinook will tip 'em easily.
reason is becuz when you fight fires they cant always see the tail number so the paint the side with washable paint to make how loads of water the hooker brought. and from a distance you can see it. always dirrents colors
I remember watching a rescue program. It MIGHT have been "Rescue 911". I'm not sure. But I do remember THIS vividly. They were airborne. Then something happened, & the pilot yelled, "Rotor wash!" Then the helicopter went down FAST! Everyone was shaken, but they were o.k. What IS a rotor wash, & why does it cause the heicopter to go down SO fast?
It is called "settling with power". A heli in an out of ground effect (high) hover, or a steep approach can sink into its own turbulance as turbulant air produces no lift. The only way to correct, is basically to dive forward into clean air, but this requires altitude and time. Since settling usually happens in steep approaches near the ground. The results are usually not fun.
you, my friend, actually know what you are talking about... me thinks someone has actually either worked on, or flown a CH-47. So tell me, how was it? I am about to change my MOS to 15U and hoping to go 153A in the next few years to fly these beautiful flying busses.
The UH-1 and the Ch-46 have something in common. They were both the first American choppers that were turbine powered. Other than that they are dusty old dino's. R.I.P. 50's tech...
You are probably thinking of the CH-46 Sea Knight as the "crashing one" which is a similar dual mainrotor design. The CH-46 Seaknight has three landing gear instead of Chinook's four, making it more tippy when it lands. Chinooks actually don't crash as much and are quite reliable. Sea Knights are always landing at sea, though, on assault ships which rock in the water.
My squadron had 2 crashes in 2 years back in the day, and none of it had to do with the landing gear. Pilot error inone, and bad deck handlers and launch control in the other
Fully loaded (that's a 2000 gallon bucket) we generate about 250 mph winds. That's why they call her Big Windy. BTW, that helicopter is based out of Stockton, CA. Bravo Company 1/126th Aviation.

How does that dual rotor thing works? Is there any mecanism? Does anybody know?
Korvan1993 8 months ago
@Korvan1993 The rotors are connected via a shaft with the front rotor being turned by the power of the rear engines.

SAR techs who love the CH47, so do the people they find and save with them
They will fly their CH47 in weather that I would never consider flying in and
Im flying a Turbo Beaver a very stout plane its self but not as tough as those Chinooks.

Now I know why this type of chopper was tagged with the name "Chinook." Them rotors put down a mighty amount of wind!

ROFL yea... CH46 was better... that's why the CH46 started later & is now retired, whereas the Chinook (CH47) is still in active service.
The Chinook is faster, has longer range, can lift more, and requires one less crew member than the CH46.
Oh and each single engine in a Chinook has the same power as both of the engines in a CH46 combined.
CH46 better? ROFL You are so full of shit...
The Chinook is a beautiful aircraft. Too bad we can't hear the wonderful engine sound properly in this vid.

I'll be sad when Chinooks are phased out. Perhaps they will be revived once people in our military realize how awesome they are at what they do.
