  • look the only reason people think that girls are better barrel racers (I am a girl barrel racer) is cause more girls barrel race than guys. I'm sure if there were more guys then girls they would dominate the barrel world over the girls. -_-

  • My friends one speed barrel time was 6 seconds.. her horse is crazzy :)

  • ok girls can do this way better...i can get a 15 second and im only 11...so id like to c a boy do that...like this if you agree

  • Comment removed

  • @heartland0517 there no need to brag -_- Boys can do that too, take my BF J.R. Sullivan for example....

  • Wow...these horses are something. My paint mare had enough weight in her hind end she could run a pattern in 18 seconds flat. Loved Charm to death...best preformer.

  • @EquessEyes its okay to hold on to the horn if you're going fast enough, it keeps that outside hand out of the horses mouth allowing you to lift nose and flex shoulder in the turn. if youre going fast enough its more of a drift and with the inside hand you can flex and lift, while keeping the outside steady on something solid-- and keeping you in perfect balance. its not required, but it keeps you're posture in sync while the horse breaks down to turn.

  • @EquessEyes Im a barrel racer, and yes you need to hold onto the horn going those speeds. You come around those barrels and you need somthing to push your self back up to catch the speed.

  • @NegativeNancy17 it helps because, if you're unsteady around the turn, you are more likely to pull on the reins a little to keep you're balance (BAD), which unbalances your horse, and he could trip, stumble, etc. so most poeple just hold the horn so thet they can stay out of their horse's way.

  • the horse at 0:46 is soooooo pretty!

  • still trying to get faster on my 3 year old but our times are getting faster

  • my grandma use to be a barrel racer but now shes 60 something and now shes to old she said to race

  • @EquessEyes holding the horn is more for balence to keep you strait and keep the horse from falling. not because your afraid.

  • @xXDixieBarrelRacerXx how can holding on to the horn keep the horse from falling?

  • @NegativeNancy17 It lines you up with the horse so they dont loose their balence! if u lean in or out the horse is gunna go down.

  • @NegativeNancy17 I think it evens out how youre sitting, so you dont put too much weight either way so the horse doesnt tip

  • @NegativeNancy17 Lots of ways. It keeps you centered. The horse, if you're racing right, will turn. I've had my knees touch the ground. ONE WRONG MOVE, and you could hurt yourself or your horse. Refusing to hold the horn out of pride is a good way to get yourself killed.

  • @NegativeNancy17 it just helps you keep your balance so you can keep your weight to the middle so the horse doesn't loose it's balance when turning kos if you feel like your going to fall holding onto the horn can stop you from throwing your weight over to the side the horse us turning on :) and you feel more safe :D

  • whats the song???

  • im doing barrelsnow and have for my whole life. Ive just started my grey and im having trouble puching her up around 1rst. anny sugestions?

  • @blueandelvis13 Having trouble do what? I have trained several barrel horses around where I live. Send me a message and I might be able to help you out.

  • If you've never tried it, go for it!!! its such a rush! like going on a 15 second roller coaster! so cool! amazing pics too:)

  • omg i love that paint at 0:47 (!) so pretty <3

  • time, practice, discipline,trust.... its fun

  • Its so weird.... I have been riding since I was born basiclly. But I took lessons for 7 years from a English rider. I was one of her first western riders. So I keep my heels down, and hold the reins with two hands. But I'm in a barrel saddle. Its almost like I have a combination riding style.

I don't even wear spears let alone kick my horse. All of her commands are voice commands like most English riders.

  • they should really wear helmets, anything could happen

  • @RPSHammond i barrel race and in barrel racing no one wears helmets because english does and only little kids use them

  • @911natalia Lots of people in Barrel Racing wear helmets not just little kids and English riders... Who cares if you wear one or not, but if you do smart thinking because anything could happen while your up on a horse going full speed around barrels.

  • @horsechick6693 i have been barrel raceing since i was 2 and im from okahoma and no one that i know that barrel races uses hemets because it looks better

  • @911natalia Who cares if it looks better, what happens if you fall off and injure your head, or your horse falls on your head and kills you. Thats what happend to my friend, her horse refused and flipped over and crushed her skull becuase she didn't wear one. Better to be safe then look good. Its common sense.

  • @horsechick6693 ya but what are the chances of that though o and did she die

  • @911natalia I'm from Oklahoma too, and I have never heard anyone say "I don't wear a helmet because I look better without one". I don't wear one but thats because it gets in my way, your just as likely to get hurt on the way there as you are in the arena so if your hell bent on helmets for "safety" then never take it off.

I have a friend who has brain damage because of the "safety" helmet, the Dr. said she would have been fine if she wouldn't have had the helmet on. So they arent that great.

  • @AshleighRSexton helmets are also bad cus that hapend to my friend to but i get hats with padding so it herts less

  • @EquessEyes same lol i ride both i LOVE the barrels!, BUT YOU KNOW im like OMFG HORN GO AWAY! haha

  • OMG the bay paint at .47 is GORGEOUS! and the grey after it is my dream colour! Almost white with black mane and tail!

  • great pics. the horse at :25 looks like my big guy and the one at 1:04 is beautiful.

  • @EquessEyes When going at high speeds, it's best to lean your weight into the outside stirrup and grab the horn with your outside hand. It keeps your horse balanced and keeps you back in the seat.

  • @MollyP09 awsome! im a beginner and you saved my butt on balance lol

  • I hav two barrel racers aswell...It is a really though sport...it takes years tu master hell...I havent even fully masterd it and I hav been ridin since 3 years of age English and Western.

  • ok boys can do this but we all know girls r better so just dont even start with the whole gender thang

  • ok for whoever said to put your weight in your inside sturrup thats about the biggest mistake you can make. put you weight in the outside sturrup and use your inside leg to lift his rib cage and get his nose tipped to the insdie when you get to the barrel so its a nice round smooth turn if u put your weight to the inside it makes his drop his hip which isnt good

  • ok this is to just horsin around 24 i have been doing gymkhana fro a while so wen u are racing keep your legs in the middle but if your horse does leg cues u can push harder on one side and the horse will turn away from the pressure so if u put pressure on the left and none on the right the horse will go right and vise versa ur welcome

  • @Crazys52 thanks! ill keep that in mind!

  • @JustHorsinAround24 ya no problem i just recently competed in a gymkhana were i live on my mustang pearl and i am trying to teach her leg cues but she is kind of a brat in some ways like in texas barrel she did good the on the first turn but the second one she cut to close and then came out wide which cost me 3 seconds and my friend beat me by those 3 seconds so leg cues are very impotant!! :)

  • ok im confused im a biginner barrel racer where do you put your legs?

  • keep ur heels down and ur legs 4ward n wen u go into a turn, put ur weight in the inside stirrup n kick w/ the outside leg hope this helps

  • I LOVE BARREL RACING lol

  • the horn is there to keep you in place and when you push yourself into the saddle it keeps you from bouncing and everytime you bounce its a 100th of a second and we all know thats huge

  • in my opinion anyone and everyone should run barrels. and yes i do see woman riding bulls. My aunt used to ride bulls. I have many friends who are girls that absolutely love riding bulls and there has been a professional woman bull rider...she also rode broncs. I know this because the association we were in gave her an award. We didnt know she was a woman until after she took off her helmet.lol thats a true cowgirl right there!!!!

  • i agree! its great for the horse! but i also think every horse should know walk trot canter on the rail as well.

  • i think its okay for guys to barrel race and pole bend. i mean if theyre good at it and they enjoy it they should be able to do it in their spare time. in the rodeo association im in they arent alklowed to run barrels or poles. but i think if they wanna do it for fun its fine, just like if a girl wanted to ride bulls.:)

  • ok i dont want to get yelled at my alot of people but i want your oppiponion. do you think that men should barral race?? and do you think that men should pole bend. i personaly think that men should not barrel race or pole bend cause do you see woman out riding bulls and broncs at rodeos? so men have that sport to themselves i think that women should have a sport to themselves but it is MY oppionion. dont yell at me if you think something diffrent.

  • @ArabianImages Im not yeling or anything, but there are girls out there rinding bulls and broncs. Im going to ride bulls when im 16, but right now I am steer wrestling and riding steers.

  • I kinda agree as well as disagree i think boys should not be able to compete in higher shows but in open shows why not!

  • Thats just stupid! Its a sport! Thats just like saying girls shouldnt play Baseball or Football, Soccer..... Both genders can do it! Some of the best trainers are guys.

  • Guys and Girls should be able to do any sport together. And there is nothing wrong with men doing our sport! And yes have you ever heard of the WPRA? Women ride bulls, broncs, barebacks, ect.

  • yeah..i do barrels and poles..i have been for 5 years now..but im def. not gone say im tha best at it..or anywhere close for that matter..especially since bout 4 of those 5 years i was on a mustang! =] l0l but i mean yeah i run out w/ both hands on tha riens then when i go into the barrel i drop tha outside rien and grab tha horn then use inside leg pressure! its worked so far w/ me!!

  • I barrel race, pole bend, rope and pretty much anything to do in a western saddle. Now as for holding the horn? its habit. I mean if you're going fast enough I don't give a shit about "form" that comes natural but if I'm flyin at a HIGH rate of speed, then I'm gonna wanna hold on for dear life when my horse has to rate the barrel and slow down hella fast. I have proper form and get decent times, but I hold onto the horn so my ass doesn't end up on the ground hahahah XD

  • I hold the horn it signals my horse to turn cuz when i grab the horn i sit back in my saddle (my horse feals it) and she rates t but i go back to two hands then to one hand i do that at my first second and third barrel also ALOT of pro rodeo girls hold the horn and if that makes them a not so good rider and you say your better than the rider that hold the horn then why are you not at the NFR?

  • since your talking bout holding the horn and all, i hold the horn around the 2nd and 3rd but tend to stay 2 handed around the first because thats what i feel confortable with and it doesnt effect me one bit

  • Nah, I misread what you commented and took it offensive. Sorry about that.

  • First of all, just because people hold the horn doesn't make them a bad rider. Second, there are many experienced riders on youtube. Many are probably more experienced than you are. It's not right to say you're the best rider out of everyone, ecspecially when you're not. Having more experience doesn't make you the better rider. I have been riding for 10 years now. I'm sure there are people who are better than me that have been riding for a less amount of years. Great video horses4evr29. I subbed

  • ok but holding on to the horn is a VERY important part of barrel racing. If your going fast enough, Its not a choice. You HAVE to in order to keep proper form. And ya know what. Who cares? If she thinks she's the best ridder on here, Let her think that. There's no reason to get rude and pick a fight on you tube. Come on. Chill out

  • I agree.

  • Myy bad., i thought u were saying if people DO hold on the horn.

  • Hey, awesome video. What song did you use for this video? I enjoy Barrel Racing also, it's a lot of fun. ^^

  • i have 2 barrel racers and the sport is not easy it takes time and practice you have to be ready for anything to go on in a split second

  • Yeah you do :D

  • @mackmoney22 amen.

  • its not only a skill and a talent its a passion too! =D But im 11 and me and my horse beat tons of adults all the time... :) And, no, my horse is not out of control. Some horses are out of control and the ppl are hanging on for dear life!! But not all the time.

  • it's a skill,a talent..NOT something determined by AGE..i been racing for a long time and some 10 year old kids can whoop my ass in a heartbeat!

I use the horn if im REALLLLLY trying. my horse needs to be neck reined with a little guidance from the other hand and i only got 2 hands..sooo.?

  • cant we all just get along....your supposed to be commenting on the video lol not each other.......

  • Like just cause u have ben riding for 13 years dosent mean anything .. my cousin has ben riding for only 1 year and she beats alot of the adults .. but its not realy u that is the best its pretty much u and the horse ... the horse does most of it .. anyway .. good vid :D

  • its better to lift than pull and neck rein.

i learned that from a barrel racing trainer from texas.

and if you lift then you can put your hand on the horn.

  • Also an idea is to use your leg for presurse and lift

  • and ive been riding for thirteen years.

  • ah. Youre right... to an extent. I barrel race as well, but i dont use the horn. I use two hands for various reasons, among them being i dont really like grabbing the horn for balance, and i also use my horse for reining, and need him to be supple for training.

  • Thought you might need to read this:

You can neck rein but you really should not. When you run a horse, you need one hand on the saddle horn keeping you steady and the other hand should be on the rein next to the barrel helping your horse around. If you neck rein you are not teaching your horse how to flex, if he can't flex, he can't "hug" the barrel. How many barrel racers have you seen neck rein a horse around?

  • some horses will mess up if u dont neck rein them..not all horses have to be plow reined..

  • The pro barrel racers use the saddle horn i was watching the NFR and all the barrel racers hald on to the saddle horn

  • That is the same idea i have thanks for posting it alos another term i use is " C " shape because you have to have your horse flexed and it looks like a " C " when thier body is shaped or flexed correctly

  • i never said it was horrible loser i said it was dangerous because it is....ya umm ur like 10 and im 18...ive been riding alot longer than u have im sorry to break it to u

  • hey i think it is safer to put yor hand on the horn and i have been riding for a lot longer than you probably and it must be because look how many ppl are against you

  • just because your 18 and doesnt mean your a better rider -_- im only 15 and i beat lots of adults all the time.

  • i have to agree. its my first year barrel racing and i was in the beginner division at the rodeo i went to and i beat quite a few adults and im only 13. juist because youre older doesnt mean youre better, its just skill, not age.

  • atually i have....my mom barrel races for wrangler and cinch:) i own one of the biggest ranches here in the united states so im pretty sure i know alittle bit more than u do:)

  • Ok. Who CARES what your mom does, you obviously don't know what you are talking about. How about you explain to us why this is so horrible to do.

  • i never said it was horrible loser i said it was dangerous because it is....ya umm ur like 10 and im 18...ive been riding alot longer than u have im sorry to break it to u

  • Its funny you're bringing age into this, especialy saying that you're calling somebody that much youger than you a loser. Haha, you think thats the mature way to handle the situation ? & everyone has their own style, some people feel safer with it on the horn, some feel that its dangerous. Its all in what the rider is comfortable with. Your mom races for Wrangler ? What's her name ?

  • Thank you, for saying this. Besides I'm not that age, but they are obviously insecure about their level of knowledge so if personal attacks and lying makes them feel better, who am I to burst their bubble?

  • gretchen...dah she has been to the nfr for the last 12 years:)

  • Grethchen . . . ? Last name would help. Because i happen to know that there arent many professional female riders right now. I dont remember one of them being a Gretchen.

  • Hmm just because you are older that sombody doesnt mean that you are a better rider. Look at Rachel Myllymacki! She out ran alot of the big girls when she was 12 and made it to the NFR? So age doesnt matter.

  • I agree with you on the who cares part, I have never heard of it being dangerous and I have been riding and barrel racing for 16 yrs. but I am 19 have met tons of barrel racers the only ones I know of that dont really use saddle horns are the Australians! Using the saddle horn is safe!!

  • yes us australians do use the saddle horn it realy depends on the horse and rider. like if we need to realy push our bottom in the saddle to get the horse to rate and turn some horses dont need this as much so we can ride 2 handed round drums :)

  • what i notices is all these girls/boys have there hands on the saddle horn..haha wow umm thats the most dangerous thing u can do in barrel racing

  • No its not.

Thats the safest place to put them. Your hand dont need to be on the reins, because they arent used & if they are, your shouldnt be barrel racing.

  • That's not dangerous at all. Only one hand needs to be on the reins. It's safe to hold on.

  • im sorry to tell u but it is....go to like stacy westfall and some of the best horse trainers in the world and they will tell u the same:)

  • are you kidding. ask any professional barrel racer and they wil all tell you to have your hand on your horn. it is more dangerous not to. do you even barrel racer?

  • grabbing the horn isnt there to help you stay on its to help you keep your form when turning and keeping a heavy seat thus helping your horse turn because you are staying off his shoulders and not getting in the way of his turn also if you dont use your horn many people dont have anything to balance them when they come out of the turn but the reins in the horses mouth which then throws the horse off so using your horn is staying safe and sure making that the smartest thing to do when running

  • but when doing your "slow work" you should use two hands around the barrel because if you drop your outside hand when teaching your horse then they will drop into the barrel or blow their turns so it really depends on the speed you are going and how trained your horse is

  • This is a really cool video.:)Barrel racing isnt that hard you guys.I do it all the time its SOOO much fun.!If you wanna know anything elese about it just message me and I will tell you.:)

  • i need help getting my horse to go aroung the barrels faster could u tell me how to do so?

  • barrelracelover: how was your horse trained for barrel racing? Do you know? the method I used was when I get ten feet from the barrel I stop and back up to get them to put the weight in their back end! This REALLY helps them go faster!

  • thnx i'll try that. the ppl at my horse show go like super fast around the barrels and i want so bad to beat them and their horses into the dirt

  • Your welcome!!

I know one stupid barrel can ruin your time!

  • ya thats wat i do i teach to rate..............there are so many people out there that would have hacka fast horses if they would rate them at the turns :)

  • i agree with you guys! i barrel race and it can be tough!

  • i agree with u completely morganmaddie1 its not as easy as it looks u really need to have a conection to your horse....so 4 all u people out there who think its easy than try it

  • The sport is way harder than you relize. I barrel race a ton and I have fallen twice in a barrel at my house, and I have been bucked off so many times going around the barrels, so, you guys need to think before you try it!

  • I like the girls helment on 0:17!!!

  • Its a cover/

  • i LOVEE the horse at :42 bc it looks a lot like my horse and hes GORGOUS!

  • does your horse have to learn how to turn sharply

  • well you teach them the pattern by walking/trotting through. with other practice like bending him and stuff and learn different leg commands. then you just increase the speed slowly and eventually you will go fast. idk it took me 3 years to teach my horse who was a crazy abused horse to be a good gamer. :) novel syndrome hahaha

  • i love the horse at 47 seconds it is a paint and my horse is a paint foxtrotter

  • OMG!!Me 2!!

  • NEVER TOO OLD TO RIDE!! i know 60 yr old women who are kick ass in barrels!
