Dean Baker: "The list of rules that need changing is long, but this is where a successful effort to rebuild the middle class must focus its efforts. As long as the economy is rigged to redistribute income upward, tax and transfer policies designed to help the middle class and poor will inevitably fail. The right knows this, if progressives can't learn this basic fact, then we are spinning our wheels no matter how angry and organized we get." Protests wake people up but you must change laws
The vast majority of farm subsidies go to the largest farms. The biggest 10% of farm businesses have received 72% of farm subsidies, according to the Environmental Working Group. The Government Accountability Office found that improper farm payments amount to as much as $500 million each year. Since 2000, the government has paid $1.3 billion in subsidies to people who own "farmland" that is not even used for farming.
@demmmmm1 Farm income for 2010 exceeded $92.5 billion. That's a 34% increase from 2009, and even if you subtract payments from the government 28.8%above the previous ten-year average. Most farm subsidies go to large and corporate farms. Sorry but America's agricultural polices are relics of another era, a drag on our 21st-century economy. Farmers can thrive without government subsidies, guaranteed prices and protections. We already see it in many crops we grow.
The real war that has been going on in this country for decades is more clear now than ever. It’s a class war. A war on working Americans waged by the right-wing corporate elite and the politicians, like Walker, who they buy.
Good for you Wisconsin! California here - hard to find info about you because of media blackout. Just saw you on Ed Schultz (he's great but I think his NBC bosses are putting you guys on the back burner) after 45 min. about Japan. I feel deeply for Japan but after 3 hours on MSNBC it's time to hear about you. Stay strong! You are the real America! We're so proud!
Thank you! Great speech! First they pick on teachers, next farmers, police, firefighters, factory workers, hotel workers, janitors, cafeteria workers.....it goes on and on!!
Tony is a 3rd generation dairy farmer in Central Wisconsin. He does not accept government subsidies- he works his butt off and takes care of his family and the land.
