Hey Jason ~ Curious what other mods you made to your favorite "Stradivarius" Golden Melody with the Earl the Pearl compositecomb?? What key is that harp? I'm just learning but wanted to get a Golden Melody and thinking about modding it too. Love your vids! Dam you got skills!! I'd like to catch a show of yours on the east coast sometime! Gapping the low key harps, like F, has proven elusive to me. I can't get the obs to bend several semitones even after spending a lot of time refining my technique. They tend to squeal, etc. Any advice? They reeds are embossed, arced, and the plates are tip scooped per my other harps...which play perfectly for my style.

hi, im using a lee oscar key of G and im having a problem with my 4&5 overblow that when i try to sustain them the harp makes a really high pitched ringing sound, is this due to reed placement or technique?

Hi Skunk. IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT! You are doing the right thing. Lee Oskar Reeds are wider and shorter than Hohner reeds and that causes that hissing sound. Try it on a Hohner and you'll get it right away probably.

I am a harp geek and a reed nerd, I know it. I am also a kid at heart. The bent overblows sound awesome the way you use them. This is a great video showing low harp OB's. Subs, I'm not shocked at all. Historically the mainstream culture very rarely acknowledges artists doing innovative things. People would rather listen to the American Idol winner or any other McMusic on the radio rather than somebody pushing the boundaries of artistic expression. I'm not sure, but I would think Jason receives a better reception in Europe than he does in the the states. They value culture/art much more than Americans. And therefore have much more eclectic tastes.

Excellent video. I'm starting to bend my OBs now, especially using 6 OB bent - and custom harps DO make it easier. Does the eyebrow movement help on your bent OBs? LOL! Keep on keepin' on, bro!

OK, enough ass kissing! Why do you use the posts for support? I like to 'hem' the covers which really strengthens the cover plates. Hemming is simple, just cut the flaps and bend them back flat. You recently signed and tested one of my harps from David Payne. His custom Elk harps are what I've been filling my bag with. What do you think of them?

Do you recommend buying custom harps or customizing them yourself? (After seeing one of your shows in the Village and checking out your rig on your site: I bought all 12 keys of Golden Melodies and I am preparing to order some Earl the Pearl combs...but my customizing so far has led to "overblow" harps that don't play fast or very well at all- mostly Lee Oscars which are I know are not recommended far over draw/blowing.) Also, what do you think of customizing the new Marine Band Deluxes?

The best is to learn how to them yourself...I do both now but didn't start buying them until very recently Customizing M.B. Deluxes would be a GREAT place to start! this is very interesting. Well is it neccesary to get a custom harp when you play Chalrie McCoy terry Mcmillan style. I mean Terry played on many number 1's and I think all he used was golden Melodys'? I guess the question I need to ask is if i don't overblow/ overdraw would a custom harp still knock me out? Maybe this is the wave of the future. I m not contradicting you but McCoy used a out of box 'old standby'and who plays cleaner????. thanks

I have been playing for about a year what would you say is the best out of the box harmonica since I'm a poor college student I can't afford the custom harps.

The best out of the box harp right now is the suzuki firebreath which still goes for 80 or 90 lower than that probably a seydel blues solist i think...Hohners are only the best after customization then there not really hohners anymore!

Great clip. Think I've got embossing down but reed curling...i'm confused. Do you curl your reeds so much that viewed from underneath a ridge is visible or should it be a gradual curl?

As far as the Strad your right it's mostly the reeds but the comb makes it feel and vibrate better...more solid like..Hard to explain the sound is a little less hollow more direct. Very pure and accurate well balanced treble bass and mids like a strad...

Hi Jason. Is the largest reason your customized GM is a "Strat" your reed tweaking or the comb. I'm presuming it your specialization much more than the comb. Also: I'm not a bad harp player (you've complimented me on my Myspace site. Can a u-blocking guy like me be instructed by an Olympian guy like you or is the mouth structure too different. H. Levy liked my phrasing and tone but felt I couldn't get "his stuff" with my u-blocking. dennis (nyc)

The comb on the Strad is an earl the pearl, custom plastic composite comb. Joe Spiers uses the Lavoie combs in his "Premium Marine bands"
