I'm proud of myself for having the game for both systems and for having Shen Mue as my favourite game and favourite collection of all time! I love it.
i don't get why everybody keeps telling that this game "must be by far the best game ever made". It just doesn't seem that interesting to me. It kinda reminds me of the Sims, and I don't know why D: whatever, i'll never get, why people like Shenmue that much. :D

I wanted this game and the Dreamcast when I was young but SEGA released it so quickly after the N64... My parents refused to buy it. But I played it in 2007 and I'm happy to say that it was maybe my greatest experience in videogame. I just want Shenmue 3 !
This game breathes the soul of SEGA for me. A stunning, intrinsically Japanese game, of epic proportions. What's more, the Dreamcast came out way before the PS2, and the PS2 never delivered anything close in it's life time.
@XChronicHash it is hands down the greatest game I have ever played. It transcends being just another video games and can only be considered an immersive work of art. You owe it to yourself to play it, trust me.

i say. if not shenmue 3 at least make Ryo Hazuki a special character in the next Virtua Fighter game. i personally think that would be awesome. especially if when fighting Akrika, Ryo makes a reference to his scar on the same cheek. or him looking familiar. just think about the hours and hours of vocal recording for all the different non playable characters. and the hours creating all the different faces and styles. i never once seen a clone of a person walking around. then on top of that the scoring of the games music. this game is just.... yes

@8010580 According to Wikipedia the project is pending back and forth all the time. Yu Suzuki says he wants to do the third part but the company (Sega) is reluctant, due to bad sales back in the day of Shenmue II, budget issues and various other reasons...

no need of trying make thejoyboy change his view of the dreamcast , i think that every gamer thats 20years + knows as a fact , that the Dreamcast was G R O U N D B R E A K I N G when released. There was several things that "killed" the Dreamcast. 1. No dvd support 2. Segas failures with the mega cd , 32x and saturn and 3. Big gamecompanies like EA didnt release games to the Dremacast becouse the earlier consoles didnt do well. Dreamcast will always be THE console in my eyes.
The graphics engine is very dated and the resolution is obviously choppy.. but the level of of artistic detail is still fantastic.
I'm playing through the game again now. I do miss the feeling of playing it for the first time when I was 15, when everything about the game (and the console) was groundbreaking.
Such an amazing game. I'm only 15 but I've played it and it's so magnificent! Such a heart-warming story! And the culture looks ridiculously beautiful. Japan ftw. ♥ It also looks very realistic too! Rating out of 10? 100!
@pippiculo I was literally about to write (pretty much) the exact same thing. I was 12 too. The hype was intense, and the game totally met the buzz. I actually begged my mother everyday to let me have it (it was meant to be a Christmas present) Maybe it was just the age, but oh my LORD it felt beyond epic. Every moment was pure joy It just felt incredible... to go from Nights into Dreams / Tomb Raider to this was SUCH a jump.
@looder22 The Dreamcast is the most underestimated gameconsole so far. It was released almost 2 years (24 months !!!!) before the next console in the "same generation" came out witch was the playstation 2. It was also unique in many other ways , the VMU (memory cards) , the option to play online , the titles that was waaaay ahead of its time , samba the amigo ? Rez ? Powerstone 2 ? Shenmue ? Shall i go on ? Space channel 5 ?
@TheJboy88 I LOVE the Dreamcast... but I don't know... when it comes to the system with the better amount of better games, you can't really beat the PS2, no matter what generation really. It has some of the greatest games ever. Plus, all these old school SEGA games are being re-released anyways as digital downloads and on other platforms now, so you still win by having the PS2 and any current system :)
theres a sega dreamcast and a few of there games on the japanese psn and sega franchise on the english and american playstation store so hopefully they will add the shenmue games to it so ppl can buy the downloads of the first two games I HOPE .... then they could make the third shenmue . just a thought
Sega, all we want is SHENMUE 3, I don't care about any other games you make. heck as much as I love NBA 2k series, I would rather have you put that on hold to pump enough money into making shenmue 3. I tried getting into this when it was released but even then the horrible voice acting, weird animations and very boring dragging story could not convince me to keep playing after a few hours
Oh God, the music, just epic. Brings back so many fucking memories, Sega have said they would make Shenmue III, but only if it was published/backed by either Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo.
I could see Sony been hugely successful if they picked up the IP, it would sell by the truckloads in Japan, just look at the Yakuza franchise.
All that ever needed fixing in the series was the voice acting. 10/10 and way ahead of it's time. C'mon Suzuki-san, get cracking!
Its ashame the dreamcast died the way it did. I have never enjoyed a game as much as i did Shenmue. The dreamcast will always be remembered as one of the most amazing consoles in history without the dreamcast's influence the xbox 360, ps3 and any next gen console would not be the powerhouses they are today.
my cousin was like 20 years old and me and my brother were like 5 years old and he have us his dreamcast and a couple of games i remember playing power stone and shenmue good times me and my brother always tried getting capsules
That game was way ahead of its time. It didn't rely on boobs, guns or over-the-top CGI. Instead, you had an involving storyline, quirky NPCs and many more. Yes it is a short game but that's a quality in this case. It doesn't overstay its welcome.
I'm disappointed in Sega, they're are just continually making sonic games and just forgot about all the other classics they made throughout the years. When are they gonna learn to accept that sonic's days are over and to focus on other games like Shenmue?

I got my freaking dreamcast in my room right now and sitting next to it is a copy of shenmue 1 and 2 and also sonic adventure 1 and 2. those 4 games will forever be in my heart..i grew up on them..thats my childhood man..i love it

To this day I don't think I have seen graphics as pristine and colourful as a Dreamcast with an RGB Scart lead plugged in to a good old CRT Television. Eleven f**king years.....jesus.
Ironically Shenmue was the first Dreamcast game I ever bought, without knowing a thing about it, the opening blew me away, its not like you'd expect a game of this quality to come so soon after a console is released. Sega did so well there.
i used to love getting back home slapping dreamcast on and razzing round the docks on a forklift, sounds mundane but i was strangely therapeutic...really drew u into the world with the story and characters... little touches like the vending machines and arcades made this game amazing, haven't even played any games in years but i remember this classic was so cinematic, theres not many games out like these days from what i see

When I did this game it was 1999-2000 (yes we did it in japanese) I barely was12 years old.
This game blew up my mind.
It was.... I don't even know how to describe it. Unique. Powerful. Immense.
Dreamcast is indeed the most underrated console ever created so far.
And Shenmue, oh man, what a game.
For a person like me, who loved (and loves) Japan, a game where you could roam freely through a japanese city was the ultimate experience.
I will never forget this game.

I was given the choice by my parents of what console to have after my PS1 stopped working.
I went with the PS2.
Looking back at this game and all the others released for the Dreamcast, I think I might have made a huge mistake.

@looder22 The Dreamcast is the most underestimated gameconsole so far. It was released almost 2 years (24 months !!!!) before the next console in the "same generation" came out witch was the playstation 2. It was also unique in many other ways , the VMU (memory cards) , the option to play online , the titles that was waaaay ahead of its time , samba the amigo ? Rez ? Powerstone 2 ? Shenmue ? Shall i go on ? Space channel 5 ?

@TheJboy88 I LOVE the Dreamcast... but I don't know... when it comes to the system with the better amount of better games, you can't really beat the PS2, no matter what generation really. It has some of the greatest games ever. Plus, all these old school SEGA games are being re-released anyways as digital downloads and on other platforms now, so you still win by having the PS2 and any current system :)

theres a sega dreamcast and a few of there games on the japanese psn and sega franchise on the english and american playstation store so hopefully they will add the shenmue games to it so ppl can buy the downloads of the first two games I HOPE .... then they could make the third shenmue . just a thought

Sega, all we want is SHENMUE 3, I don't care about any other games you make. heck as much as I love NBA 2k series, I would rather have you put that on hold to pump enough money into making shenmue 3. Now there is no excuse the current gen consoles are more than capable, even if they used the dreamcast engine, i'd still be best game on ps3/360/wii

Oh God, the music, just epic. Brings back so many fucking memories, Sega have said they would make Shenmue III, but only if it was published/backed by either Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo.
I could see Sony been hugely successful if they picked up the IP, it would sell by the truckloads in Japan, just look at the Yakuza franchise.
All that ever needed fixing in the series was the voice acting. 10/10 and way ahead of it's time. C'mon Suzuki-san, get cracking!

Its ashame the dreamcast died the way it did. I have never enjoyed a game as much as i did Shenmue. The dreamcast will always be remembered as one of the most amazing consoles in history without the dreamcast's influence the xbox 360, ps3 and any next gen console would not be the powerhouses they are today.

That game was way ahead of its time. It didn't rely on boobs, guns or over-the-top CGI. Instead, you had an involving storyline, quirky NPCs and many more. Yes it is a short game but that's a quality in this case. It doesn't overstay its welcome.

Ironically Shenmue was the first Dreamcast game I ever bought, without knowing a thing about it, the opening blew me away, its not like you'd expect a game of this quality to come so soon after a console is released. Sega did so well there.

i used to love getting back home slapping dreamcast on and razzing round the docks on a forklift, sounds mundane but i was strangely therapeutic...really drew u into the world with the story and characters... little touches like the vending machines and arcades made this game amazing, haven't even played any games in years but i remember this classic was so cinematic, theres not many games out like these days from what i see

@LiangHuBBB i thumbs down you, shenmue was shallow - the gameplay basically allways consisted of running and running, talking to everyone before u actually got the right person, the graphics were dull and uncolorful, theres was hardly anywhere to explore, u couldnt get into vehicles which would of made the gameplay much more diverse, the 3d fighting sucked, i completed it but i didnt like it
