Continuing, Melanie was always sly talking about this song. She claims she wrote it in 15 minutes one night. Another time, she says she wrote it at the end of a three week water fast. She was advised by a doctor to get off the fast, and the first thing she saw were these beautiful golden arches, so she broke her fast and wrote the song in a McDonalds. No clue as to when exactly all this happened.

Boy is this a puzzler. Nowhere in the discographies is this song or an album called "Various Songs" listed. There is a tribute album called something like "Various Songs/Blues", but the song does not appear on the album. However, other authoritative sources list an album released January 1970 with this song on it. Melanie gets the credit for writing it and releasing an album in 1971. WTF. Is it possible Janis knew of the song prior to the album's release? Yeah, I already know "fuck you":!

Why is it so hard for people to get that this is Janis Joplin and not Melanie? Ever since I was a little girl my dad would play Janis's version of this song and up until recently I had never heard the original but you can tell the difference. Janis has roughness about her voice and the other one doesn't. But eh song people stay to close minded to tell the difference or they just don't do enough "homework" to find that there are greatest hits cds with this song on it stating its sung by Janis

Yes, this song was originally written and sung by Melanie Safka. however, THIS version IS Janis Joplin.... taken from her album "Various Songs of Janis Joplin" released in 1970. Not an easy piece of vinyl to find, but I own it. :)
