I just became familiar with this song yesterday when I watched the excellent movie Bloodworth. The soundtrack was produced by T Bone Burnett, and like all of his projects, it's compelling, entertaining and contributes so much to the telling of the story. Stephen Bruton Performs this song and I instantly fell in love with it. How can you deny lyrics like "life plays it's tricks, some cruel but fair" and "what makes you grow old is replacing hope with regret". Magnificent.
When I was a young boy, my brother Bob, managed "The Brazos River Ramblers", a bluegrass band. It was Stephen's band. He was in high school and I was in elementary school. Through Bob's association with him, I started taking guitar lessons from him and had a remote, lifelong friendship with Stephen. My brother, Mike, at the same period studied banjo and guitar with him. Stephen is missed by many people and this video is such a cherished and wonderful performance of a very touching song.

I know this is not what you're looking for but you can get a beautiful version by Patty Loveless from an album she recorded in 1997 called "Long Stretch of Lonesome".
I just learned of this loss today....very bad. I had met a lighting guy who toured w/him and Kris - Harold Klein - who told me a lot about Stephen, but Harold died suddenly on Valentine's Day. Gee.
Stephen's music was American in every sense of the word -- encompassing every style while remaining completely original. His lyrics are comprised of life's deepest truths. He will be missed, but his art will live on.
It's with deep sadness I got the news about TSB death. Since the first time I saw him smiling threw a hole Bonnie Raitt show in Gothenburg Sweden in the early 90', I've been following Stephens music. I been lucky to catch him two times solo in Sweden and once in Austin. He's music and lyrics has made me cry, smile and laugh threw the years. I never got to know him, but he felt like a friend. My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Stephen
Bonnie Raitt sang this song at her concert in San Antonio last night... as beautiful as it was painful. Some of us had a chance to meet her after the show and the first thing she mentioned was Stephen. It was painful to see the sadness in her eyes. My prayers go out to his family and friends. Deep, deep loss. God bless you, Stephen.
loved the man, loved his music. Correction;LOVE the man LOVE his music. send my prayers to his family and those who miss him i surely do. lost my dad to cancer 11 years ago i'm glad Stephen's pain is over God bless him
He had a beautiful touch. A true master and by all accounts a nice man. Not a bad epitaph I guess. My man, Billy Earheart (ARA's) gives him a big 'obit' and quite right too.
I have all of Stephen Bruton's records. You should too! He defines "singer-songwriter"! In Austin, I have seen him help so many struggling musicians-even if he has to put his music on hold to do it. If there is a charity event in town, he's there. His music feeds the soul, no matter what it may be that you are needing at any particular time or event, he's probably already been there, and ready to talk about it, in his beautiful or feisty songs!
Turner Stephen Bruton played with Kristofferson for years, was in "The Rose", and I consider him a friend of mine...spent some time with him on a couple of Delbert McClinton cruises. Check out his bio and learn just how important he is to American music...people with whom he's played...songs he's written...albums he's produced. Appreciate him while he's still here.
Stephen Bruton is THE most seasoned veteran side-man turned prolific American songwriter of our time...pay attention! SONGWRITERS...check me on this, listen to "From the Five"!!
Miss You so much, Stephen

How do I find this song on itunes? I checked EVERYWHERE and cannot find a recording of this song

I found a recording on iTunes by Tom Rush - it's certainly true to the song; but not a recording by Stephen.

It's from his album "What is"... often Amazon sells separate tracks. Otherwise buy the whole cd. You won't regret it.

I like this song - though until today I never heard of him.
By my email friend Cindy I heard about his death. That also makes me very sad.
May all his songs live forever.
Ruhe in Frieden Stephen .
