Having grown up on an American farm i can tell you all that even if we are rich enough to have shovels we still get covered with manure when mucking out a pen. And i never got sick from it.
Don't make the mistake of thinking that not being able to buy a shovel equals not having brains.
By the way, we call the liquid manure mixture "manure tea". And, You can buy it labeled compost starter.
Are human feces processed in the same way? I can not believe that rural indians all do this with their hands. Perhaps these people were paid to handle the excrement this way, or worse, told by wealthy video camera holders that they must do it this way by hand.
I suppose for a nation that believes in the sacred cow handling and stiring by hand cow dung and urine isn't destainful. But to the viewers of other countries it may appear that either there lacks education or there is retardation amongst these people. It is an excellent lesson in composting but feces from any creature is not healthy to nearly shower in!
@enjoixander - You are an idiot. The feces of animals that don't eat meat is perfectly clean and safe. Whilst chicken manure can contain small levels of pathogens, horse, sheep, goat and cow manure is so clean you could eat it and be fine. Are you a left-wing moral degenerate Communist Islamic terrorist loving pervert too?
This is rural India and the only thing that is "unconventional" is the use of Cow Urine/Dung. It may be unpleasing to see these are handled by bare hands... Thats not too bad actually. I know they wash their hands clean before lunch ;^)

I should hope that they wash their hands right after they handle the excrement and not just before lunch.
