  • SHE WAS BEAUITFUL

  • wait I thought she was American.....why is she speaking Italian??

  • @TheDowntown86 to confuse the panel

  • A brunette voice? What does that mean?

  • She was a great TEXAS gal! RIP.

  • What year is this?

  • @ed91775 It was 1956 :)

  • So Darryl Zanuck probably had a helluva time on the casting couch with Linda Darnell, Jeanne Crain and Gene Tierney.

Unfortunately for him, he couldn't make it with Alice Faye since he "inherited" her, under contract, from the old "Fox" corporation and Shirley Temple was too young.

  • @SatchmoSings Actually, Linda Darnell turned Zanuck down.

  • @amysita77 I wouldn't be surprised.

Also, I think Darnell had a rather strong-willed mom who was also around to help push her daughter's career; she was rather young when she signed with Fox.

  • Lovely to see this clip. She died so young and tragically. I'm going to drive to West Chester tomorrow, and will stop by her grave to lay a flower and say a prayer. God bless you, Linda.

  • are you unmarried?

    YES.

    .......recently?

    hahaha love Arlene Francis!

  • She had that "classic look" which cameras captured with ease. Attractive woman, that's for sure.

  • I loved that show

  • she was such a naturel beauty

  • Grace personified, a wonderful lady.

  • lol "movies... cin-e-ma...' john was great at playing along with the guests

  • Love this woman!!

  • She was so beautiful!

  • Good fun. Thanks very much.

  • So sad and tragic the way that she died

  • Je donnerais tous l'or du monde pour qu'elle soit parmi nous, et avec moi !

  • Ah Mon Dieu ! Meveilleuse Linda !

  • Linda Darnell Sublimissime Pour Toujours !

  • She is fineeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!

  • Linda was a gorgeous, smart & talented. What a shame she turned to alcohol towards the end. She died thinking the children were still in the house and never made it out, just tragic.

  • Shame that a fire got her when she was pretty young

  • She is beautiful...and speaks Italian very well

  • I gotta believe those eyebrows were artificially enhanced.

  • Lovely Linda!

Dorothy Kilgallen looks like she's wearing a small bra across her face

  • @YellowMangerCalling She is. It's mine. I've been looking for that.

  • @gore53 I have the matching panties...

...but I am going to sell them on Japanese eBay - you are welcome to bid yourself if you want them back!

  • She was so beutiful in the roll of AMBER

  • She was amazing in "Letter to Three Wives", and in "My Darling Clementine" she overshadowed "good girl" Cathy Downs in a big way. "Fallen Angel," with Dana Andrews, is a film noir where she got great reviews - if I recall correctly, "Angel" costar Alice Faye chose to semi-retire (concentrate on her radio show with husband Phil Harris) because she felt Darnell was getting the buildup at her expense. Alas, an immensely gorgeous woman who never got her full due as an actress.

  • Linda was at her best in Letter to Three Wives. One of my favorite shows of all time.

  • A Letter to Three Wives is one of my all-time favorites, because of Linda.

  • Such a charming beauty.

  • A lady with class.

  • I love her....My favorite actresses of all the time!

    RIP

  • she has lovely big eyes! so pretty she is

  • linda darnell played the imaculate conception in the movie the song of bernadette, she died in an house fire, with over 90% burns to her body.

  • Concur with the comments below on A Letter to Three Wives. Good picture with an excellent performance by Ms Darnell. DVD Special feature on her as well showing how studio system ate her up...a superstar as a teenager and has been by early thirties...tragic...then dies after she burned to death in a residential fire

  • Though this was a late appearance in Ms Darnell's life, It is very nice to hear her as a person, not an actress. Ive had a huge crush on her since I was a little kid. But her hard life took a toll on her youth and it shows here. I think she is in her late 20's to mid 30's in this clip.

  • most beautiful of her time and a Texas girl too.

  • Dsmtoday, agree with you, to sad. Where we are now.

  • She is so good in Letter to Three Wives

  • I rented the DVD of A Letter to Three Wives and loved it so much, especially Linda that I bought the DVD so I would have it in my collection.

    RIP My dearest Linda.

  • She is so enchanting.

  • She's just marvelous-- what a classy lady. :)

  • Thank you for sharing this rare TV appearance from one of the most beautiful actresses ever to grace the screen.

  • I.I.N.M., Miss Darnell's popularity was such that many young girls born in the 1940's during the height of her popularity were doubtless named after her. A sample list would include Linda Eastman McCartney, Linda Evans, Linda Kaye Henning, and Linda Ronstadt. (And Linda wasn't even Miss Darnell's real first name!)

B.T.W., this was the last Stopette-sponsored show before Jules Montenier sold out to Helene Curtis.

  • Was this circa 1956-58?

  • Lovely, talented, charming, one of the best of her generation. I really enjoyed seeing her wonderful humor here and she looked fabulous.

  • she sounds like debbie reynolds one! i love 'a letter to three wives' she's was amazing in it ! and she was so funny here....legend

  • What a tragic ending to her life and what a horrible death she had . She died so young at 41 I think

  • I know, and she died by getting caught in a housefire. That's so tragic, and it didn't have to happen. Just an awful accident.

  • What a beautiful, vivacious woman. You would never have known how unhappy a life she led, and how her life ended tragically at a relatively young age.

  • Wow. That was great. Seeing Linda off the the screen in a natural setting is extremely rare. She was a great one of a kind LADY. Her tragic end should not overshadow her contributions to Hollywood history.

  • This was sincere, back when we had an adult culture, before irony took hold.

  • Nice! I saw her on Letter to Three Wives, she was great and so I was kinda hooked to find out who she is and am starting to want to watch more of her movies.. :) THank you for the video!

  • Watch her movies with Tyrone Power - they're the best!

  • Linda is fantastic, I'm a great fan of her

  • Linda Darnell in The Mark of Zorro was one of the prettiest young women (she was only 16) I've ever seen. She had a beautiful smile!

  • She was a great actress; Watch " A Letter to Three Wives " she steals the show. She died tragically in a fire in Chicago in the mid to late 1960's....we dont have them like her any more...real ladies with talent.....sigh

  • I totally agree with you..She was fantastic in A Letter to Three Wives! No one today can compare to these old-time actresses---NO ONE!!

  • Ahh, Linda. Rich, dark swarthy beauty. Like a full-bloom rose. And a great Italian accent.

  • I have to admit, I had never heard of Miss Darnell, but she sure was beautiful...her voice reminded me a little of Suzanne Pleshette.

  • Bountybeard, you're missing out! Check out The Mark of Zorro or Daytime Wife, she was stunning!

  • actors and actresses carried themselves with class years ago

  • i love linda! she was a terribly underrated actress.

  • Totally agree with you. Even in today's day and age, they rave about mediocre actors and the really great actors are pushed to the side (because they may not be what is considered good-looking) drives me crazy!!!!

  • oh, me too! i cannot stand most of the "actors" nowadays.

  • delicious

  • Miss Darnell was a class act..beautiful and gracious. How lovely for her to thank the panel after the game concluded. I've never seen any WML mystery guest do that. Thank you for sharing this lovely clip.

  • beauftiful woman

  • She was soooo beautiful. And her Death so tragicaly

  • I love Linda's voice!

  • what year is this?

  • March 25, 1956

  • "A brunette voice?!" Where did Garry Moore come up with that one? One film Miss Darnell was in that I enjoyed was Preston Sturges' "Unfaithfully Yours" with Rex Harrison in 1948. Unfortunately I'm not all that familiar with her work but I do remember the tragic circumstances of her death. She was one of my mother's favorite actresses and she practicually kept a vigil with the papers when Miss Darnell was hospitalized after the fire. Sad end for a neat lady. She deserved better.

  • I love Linda Darnell. Actresses today do not compare with her. She was the best!

  • Gorgeous speaking voice..those whiny sounding actresses today should take a note. she was so good in one of her first films :Stardust". Hard to find copies..but if you can get it. shes brilliant

  • Linda Darnell was a fabulous actress that had a tragic ending to her life.

  • Scandinavian? I wonder if Dorothy was thinking of Ingrid Bergman...

  • Thanks so much for posting this!

  • she still will always be a star! im right in thinking she died quite young? sad x

  • Died young age 41. Burned to death in a house fire in Glenview, Illinois.

  • thats so sad

  • She died in the hospital a short while later, but not in the house where she staying.

  • thats awfull! alot of them died really young! like harlow (or ,low under total different circumstances!) sad

  • Yes, she died of severe third degree burns from a housefire, at the age of 43.

  • o no i googled it it's awfull the way it happened so young so many of them died so young her carole lomard jean harlow and more tragically most of them back in the golden era or between the 30's-60's seemed to have such a amazing life you no like they were gods and godesses when i first started to love old movies and there stars i thought wow i wish i was alive then! but truth it was the same as it is now in hollywood back then it was glossed over and hidden very sad but for me there alway stars

  • She's so gorgeous, glamorous, clever, funny...I love Linda Darnell. Even in the twilight of her career, she was a S-T-A-R.

  • She (DARNELL) did a great job with that faux Italian accent on that episode ! These old 'clips' from

WHAT'S MY LINE.........? are terrific !
