@chepe371 I'm just glad you could see the humour in my comment. I post it expecting a bunch of "Trve kvlt" black metallers acting all badass about it.
Check out "Tuathail" my one man black metal project from the UK. Music is on my channel. I have released a demo which can be downloaded for free. Thanks.
iv been listening to this album for like 10 + years and all i have to say about it is, so melodic ,so pure, so true to music. hail ulver bergtatt and nattens
I truly believe this song captures the darkness within us all. No matter how we try to escape that looming feeling of despair it will always envelope us. This song to me is about that embrace and that raw deadly emotion that pours out when we do face the darkness.
@seasideren I agree. But it isn't necessarily a feeling of darkness. I would argue this is the voice of God. It is the spirit that promotes each of our minds, with enough self examination, into the heavenly realms where "me" is replaced with "us". It is an audible manifestation of God's wrath toward ideas that are grounded in death in destruction.
@warmachine15 can u explain more? i do agree but still confused on what u mean, i feel the same though, as if there is some spiritual link to god through this grim darkness and through sorrow u find pure truth. its like the music unlocks your 3rd eye and u tap into the source of all living, the escence of life which is eternal and undying energy.
@stiannb You know thats what i thought, kinda lost hope for them after nattens.. Few weeks ago i was listening Bergtatt at my cabin after many years. After that i opened my laptop on searched ulver from YT and gave the new material second chance. Now dunno if it is age or getting older or what but after Themes From William Blake's..., track The Argument, Plate 2, i wondered myself " how the fuck did i let this slip just before my eyes!" and ordered all albums after nattens that i could find :)
One cannot tame a wolf no more than one can "own" a cat. A dog you can train, and even consider owning. You can "train" a cat, but he's still in charge. A wolf will be in charge all the time, he won't obey you. He's a wolf.
That's why people who really like wolves have cats as "pets"... they're not really pets, they're the ones in charge. Like wolves, they don't take orders from humans, they give them. That's why people who never had a cat distrust them so much, they really do control you.
@Simpson654 what do you think a dog is? its a domesticated wolf. its just been thousands of years of domestication and breeding to conform to mans needs.
I really wonder if they will ever return to black metal...just once. The electronica is fine and all, but Bergtatt and Nattens Madrigal both make my top 20 albums if not the top 10 when I think about it. Ulver is amazing through and through.
It's only my humble opinion... But i always felt this album to be a clever homage to black metal, rather than a true black metal album.
The melodies hiding behind the buzzing wall-of-noise guitars remind me more of the structure of "noise" experimental music rather than metal.
For example; In the first track Wolf and fear. The buzzing brutality assaults the listener without warning, only to fade into a melodic folk passage.. Kind of like saying: "You hear guys?... we're doing this on purpose."
if ulver still played black metal today, i wouldnt be surprised if they were near the top of the scene. not only did they create awesome riffs, but in general they had magnificent song writing skills. truly expert musicians, i still respect the decisions on where they went musically. although it would still be sick to hear Ulver go black metal one more time....i doubt it though :(
"Elvis never did no drugs", "Ulver never played no black metal", they might call Nattens Madrigal something else, and re-release it with names for songs (wrong!). To me this is still 4, and good black metal.
@kcnirva Fuck off they are shit now? And if you want to learn about music check out When Lars Pederson is the master for that stuff not Garm so go and smoke a pipe
passion yes, but this transcends anger, I think. It is up to the individual though. Different people hear different things, but it is amazing no matter what.
Okay, there you are: Ulver in their black metal period had the most remarkable, inspiring and audible bass playing available in the black metal scene on their albums! I also love their music therefore as it's just so multidimensional through that!

The first album I listened to. Nattens Madrigal - I used to call this album the part 3 of the trilogy of black metal ulver phase. Yes but the thin distortion sound ruins everything..
Why black metal people don't understand that there is no shame in recording with normal quallity rather than in some hole in the northern woods of norway.
That's another diffrence beetween most black metal and Death metal...
In death metal they are aware that's it's hard to get used to this kinda music therefore they at least record in the best quallity.
And I can hear every note and every drum beat in this song actually nice riffs..
I understand what you're saying. I always disliked distortion except for maybe Xasthur and this. I think a good point you have is that I haven't heard it without distortion. Maybe if I heard it without distortion it would suddenly become more amazing than it is right now. The one thing distortion does have though is a raw atmosphere. Listen to 0:55 - 1:20. To me distortion seems to be a good thing for at least that part. I see it your way too though.
Distortion doesn't bug me .. And I like the quality. Most of the 'raw black metal' bands just use the recording equipment they can afford, no shame in that. I would do the same (and I did). But most important, this is a really great band and I love this song :)
Averything that gets played in mainstream is shit, thats why i try to start multiple projects so where i live(In Denamrk) wont have anytihng else to play in radio, so theyll get forced to play ''unusual'' music mosto ff the time/at all, ppls can get used to averything, thts how they got used to pop, death-industrial, black metal trash or grindcore is no difference.
The music is dark, raw, and bloodthirsty...much like the wolves ripping out the guts of their prey under the moonlight staining the pretty white snow with blood.
I don't think so. After this album Ulver had everything done what the band could have done. A new black metal album from Ulver would be just repetition.
Best song ever!! still remember the awe of getting my hands on the Three Journeyes Through The Norwegian Netherworlde lp box set!! no BM band will ever compare and considering they have'nt played BM for around ten years this is quite an astonishing achievement!May the Wolves forever hunt their prey! Hail Ulver
Ya know what... I insult pop music for being repetative, and I like black metal and all (and I enjoy ulver's later work) but the first two minutes of thsi was essentially the same thing with a brief break in it. To turn into another constant jumble.
I am happy to see how they turned around though and are now creating some really facinating music.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
there was only one part where i could make out any notes. 3:37. since that part was the equivalent to my guitar skill after one week of playing, i see no reason why this deserves any respect. i would not be at all surprised, if someone recreated this "music" using only equipment from an automobile junkyard. if this offends you, then you probably need to take a second look at why you like this recording.
dude, there was at least three guitar parts simultaneously playing throughout the song. the reason its hard to hear is the nature of the tone of BM, and the recording processes, to make it sound rough. but listen again, and youll hear the melody. its like looking at the ruins of an ancient city, closing your eyes, and then really SEEING the majesty of how it was in the past. metaphorically speaking, lol : P
Could someone educate me a little here as I am fairly new to Black Metal. Is the sound quality supposed to be that horrible and tinny?

would'nt it be cool if Ulver did another metal album?
FrostGrimm 3 years ago
I don't think so. After this album Ulver had everything done what the band could have done. A new black metal album from Ulver would be just repetition.

njaaa... i don't think so, but there are sooo many metal bands now... everything is used, so maby you're right.

Hail Ulver

From 4:19 till the end = Godly.

For me, this album is not about catchy or good music, it's all about atmosphere.

Ya know what... I insult pop music for being repetative, and I like black metal and all (and I enjoy ulver's later work) but the first two minutes of thsi was essentially the same thing with a brief break in it. To turn into another constant jumble.
I am happy to see how they turned around though and are now creating some really facinating music.

there was only one part where i could make out any notes. 3:37. since that part was the equivalent to my guitar skill after one week of playing, i see no reason why this deserves any respect. i would not be at all surprised, if someone recreated this "music" using only equipment from an automobile junkyard. if this offends you, then you probably need to take a second look at why you like this recording.

dude, there was at least three guitar parts simultaneously playing throughout the song. the reason its hard to hear is the nature of the tone of BM, and the recording processes, to make it sound rough. but listen again, and youll hear the melody. its like looking at the ruins of an ancient city, closing your eyes, and then really SEEING the majesty of how it was in the past. metaphorically speaking, lol : P
