I think the original dance is a whole lot better. Its so cute and adorable when Rinoa drags Squall onto the dance floor and teaches him to dance, than the PS2 where Squall already knows how to dance.
@SakuraK123 Do what I'm doing. Imagine that it's a few weeks after FFVIII ended and Squall asked Rinoa if they could do their first meeting again, with him actually wanting the dance and her not looking for anyone else.
It would be a nice treat for every FF8 fan if someone will make a CGI film for this masterpiece. Prequel, Sequel or even transforming of the game to film would surely rock. Don't you agree?(^_^)
The original PS2 demo for this actually used different music, which was much faster you can see the 'new' animation for this faster music at 0:33 left screen off course.
This video has a lot of sense, actually, because Sony was claiming PS2 was CGI quality. So yeah, it's a fair comparison according to Sony. But then it isn't, because sony likes to talk BS.
If they re did it today, they could add stencil shadows like from ScarFace and make the color more accurate with bloom effects. With the blocky edges you can note, they probably aren't higher then 10K each and the BG is only about 5-25k (Splinter Cell 3 raw only goes up to 50k and StarWars:RS2 on GC does 280K per scene max). They could then make characters less in polys and use LOD.
There's really not that much difference really. I mean here is some slight differences but really nothing as crazy as the FF7 PS3 tech demo. That was a massive jump in tech compared to PS2 with FF8 as FF8 was already miles ahead of FF7 graphically.
@jagr06 There's a MAJOR difference between the original and the FF8 PS2 demo. The original is pre-rended FMV, the demo is real-time in-game rendering. The only reason the FF7 PS3 demo seemed so impressive is they remade severely outdated material. Re-do that demo using FF12 FMV footage instead and you'd have the exact same kind of comparison as here.
@ColonelJadeCurtiss Original version is FMV, pre-rendered video that took hours for them to produce. New is in-game real-time rendering by the PS2 engine.
@ColonelJadeCurtiss Your comment begs to differ on that. Common sense already dictates FF8 FMV details > PS2 in-game real-time rendering details. To point out that the old looks better than the new is to imply the preception that they should be judged off the same basis, when clearly they should not.
@bulletformygizmo okay,i laughed cause i had PS1 and i think it's great i agree with your comment,i just remembered my cousin said about PS1,he said "ONLY LOSERS HAS PS1!!" ,my cousin said this okay not me,he's so mean...please forgive me...
i want a remake for either PS2 or PS3, i just bought this and 7 from the PSN store on my 3 a few days ago, damn, i remember playing this back when i was 8 lol i'm now 18 :D.
sooo whats the differnece between a full motion video and a cut scene? especially with this one.. they should of done the technical demo on the entire fmv instead of the same couple of moves... it's nice and all but the music syncs up much better to the original and thats one of the things i always found special about this one
yeah, and the camera keeps turning around in the original thats why the music feels more synchronized (in my opinion though) ... i think they have done well releasing a cut-scene and not an fmv because the cut-scene is somewhat closer to the graphics of the game, so...

@CloudStrifeComplete yeah, but that was at the the time the game was released. they wouldn't remake a fresh game that released less than a month before the tech demo did would they? btw they made a tech demo of ff6 with psx graphics too, just in case nobody remembered lol
@Caleb5617 hahha actually I started with ff7 so I dont know much about other FF games before 7 unless what I found out or read about them haha
anyway they made a tech demo for ff8 because it was the best graphics and same for ff6 (for its time)
but to make one with ff7 in 2010 knowing its the most game everyone wants remade and the most popular FF game and one of the most popular games in history haha
@CloudStrifeComplete they made a tech demo in 2010? i thought they made that one in 2005 to show just how different the playstation 3 graphics were from its predecessors or its competition, they probably dug themselves a hole on that stunt though. they were already starting on ffxiii at the time, and not to mention they had to have a separate development team for the unannounced ffxiv. kitase, the producer of ffxiii, said it would take an ideal team to make ffvii in a sufficient amount of time.
and yes but you dont grab what is possibly the most popular game in the world (still wins poll voting for best game ever even now) and I understand why the wont make it
and I wouldnt mind if they didnt make it
to me its the best game how it is (even if they dont mess it up and make t the same) its always gonna be my fav game (but better fore new fans)
also I think kitase mightbe scaed it wont hit aswell as the original
Making such comparisons only raises questions. Back in '99, the point of this video was to show what kind of actual gameplay and animations visuals the Ps2 could produce. And in that respect it was pretty stunning.
In terms of CGI, the Ps2 can do a much more impressive job too.
eh. the dance on the right had more class to it, lol
(okay before anyone bashes, I KNOW this is just a friggin' tech demo. I'm just saying. the dance on the right had more class to it...BUT, it seems that Squall improved his dance moves on the left screen XDD. It must be because no one else was there to watch him fail, except for Rinoa :P)
no man, squall knew how to dance all along (its a requirement of officers), he was trying to get rinoa to leave him alone. over time he saw that she wouldn't give up, so he just went along with it so as to not embarrass and draw attention to himself
obviosly lol PS1 made that part of the game in a FMV, it's obvious it is way better than the PS2 version in movement and graphic lol, but you have to think that a FMVs uses most of the space of the disc and also that difference between the PS2 in game graphic and PS1 FMV wasnt so great
I havent thinked about that... Maybe youre right, but the atmosphere in psx video is much better. If I get these two videos just as they are and ignoring what a can know, I prefer PSX's video.
Note: (We all know and it's obvious PS2 has more potential for graphics, I'm just comparing the two vids as they look)
In the tech demo for PS2 u only c Rinoa and Squall - the background dancers r missing and the lightsetting isnt that bright like in the PSX version. If the lightsetting were the same and the background dancers were there it would b just the same...
No. One is using a games engine, the other one is a pre-rendered CG movie. Of course the latter looks better then. What's "amazing" about it is that it looks like that and not being pre-rendered. Comparing them proves nothing, really
If there should be a comparision there should be between in-game graphics in the PS-version and this one.
That's because the original PS1 version is pre-rendered FMV while the PS2 version is in game. Thus the PS2 version was done using the same characters you'd run around on the world map or fight monsters with. Imagine the FF8 character battle models doing the dance and compare that to the PS2 demo.
Just so you guys know.. the technology that they used for the PS2 Tech Demo eventually ended up in Final Fantasy X. Claiming that it "doesn't work" is a pretty stupid argument.
FF13 isn't going for the most realistic look though, but I suppose none of the FF games really do. Uncharted 2 maybe a bit more
A picture of real time or CG from FF13 and I literally might not be able to tell sometimes. When they move I can tell, the pre-rendered has flowing hair and motion blur and a level of shaders and detail so you know.
They're working on it, but I don't know if the PS3 will be powerful enough to do the latest technology that they've done to improve that
The ps1 graphics did look better, however, since the ps2 graphics were in-game, they did a good job enhancing. I hope they do remake this entire game for the ps2 or ps3 with all those graphic enhanced features.
Yeah, the original looks better obviously thanks to it being an FMV, but the PS2 one is more fluid. Still, that's so stupid, why showcase next gen graphics by translating a good looking FMV into a not-as-good looking normal cutscene?
I'm totally agree with you... Maybe they translate it to show how fluid they move? and the real time CGI, maybe if they had remake the game to the PS2 we will had the chance to play with the characters looking like in the CGI... I think that's what they was trying to show us or whatsoever
That's because the PS1 version is an FMV cutscene; the graphics are digitally created. In the PS2 version of the dance, it's the actual PS2 graphics engine character models.
Either way, it looks fine, but I'd prefer the PS2 version just because I'd love to see the Ragnarok monsters in PS2 format. XD
The PS1 looks better due to it being FMV but id imagine if this was redone on a PS3 and then compare the two the PS3's would look alot better, Finally we are able to play games that match and beat the FMV we all drooled over in the late 90's early 00's.
agre..would be awesome,FF7 ,they have the models,ya kown the Dirge of cerberus one so would be more easy ,if i was square i would do reamake of all FFs for ps3/ps2/xbox360/PC
the problem with this video is the one on the left is bad quality but the thing is some people might say that the one on the right looks better but in fact the one on the left is what could of been actually gameplay models but the one on the left is a CG sequnce
I think the reason that these two shouldn't really be compared is that the PS2 doesn't appear to be in FMV format. It looks like a regular cutscene(ex:from ffx) The PS1 looks nicer.
I think it's interesting though, too bad they probably wont make the whole thing like this ; ;
ups i said it wrong,i tried to say that i ve seen the one in the right screen, the one i have never seen is the one in the left, terrible mistake lol.And i still remember everything about ff8 every single moment,i ve played AND finished that game a lot of times.its one of my fav games on ps1.
wtf was the dance in the right screen? never seen it, still like the one in the left,i would love a ff8 remake or a movie (Like advent children) that game was cool and seeing ff8 in a better graphic would be awesome.
the PS2 version is showing "realtime" gameplay dance scene compare to PS1 "prerendered" scene ...u can see its realtime scene is quite similar to FFX gameplay scene ..
Um, the tech demo doesn't have all of the characters because it's a tech demo, not because the graphics engine couldn't handle it. They weren't trying to copy or emulate the original, just show the processing power of the new console in comparison to a pre-rendered video on the old console.
I agree with you - I feel the greater level of activity makes it more impressive. However, the PS1 version is an FMV sequence - looking at the PS2 version, I think it's meant to be a demo of potential in-game graphics, so I don't know that they could cram as much in to that. I'm not disagreeing with you lol, just saying.
If any PS1 FF game gets a remake, it's FFVII. No, I'm not a fanboy. But it's so overwhelmingly popular and stuff, SquareEnix would be stupid not to remake it.
the ps2 version is good, but it doesnt look like its finished yet. imagine how it looks when its finished. i also like the original one too. but i never played the full game of ff8.
I must inform you that the PS2 version was a demo for "in game" graphics it was not pre-rendered and fixed as an FMV.
If people are going to comment saying "PS1 version looks better," perhaps they should consider that the PS2 has essentially gotten PS1 FMV standard graphics in actual gameplay, AMAZING!
If this PS2 version was rendered as an FMV, the difference would be far greater!
You have to remember as well that the PS2 was just a demo- it was not MEANT to look good...
I agree that the PS1 FMV looks better but also that it includes more people.... So if they matched it perfectly or rendered it FMV to the new engine then it could be pretty remarkable.
Ultimately I think it was just a stepping stone to FFX... no real intent to make a quality product.
Yea I agree with you. Why are they keepin us at the edge of our seats? lol I hope they make a FF8-2 I mean c'mon, they got like, all kinds of sequals for ff7. lol
Yeah, that would be pretty cool it they did that. Maybe like a year or two after and some new calamity arises. So many people would want to check it out.

This is REAL TIME graphic GENERATED by PS3 on the left and... MOVIE CLIP runing on PSX on the right!!!! :D
What a noobs!!! hahahaaha
"Prerendered" = movie clip or images. All intros or outros in games those days were just .mpeg files.
The same like you watching "Avatar" on DVD ;)

Zyntheria 2 years ago
I havent thinked about that... Maybe youre right, but the atmosphere in psx video is much better. If I get these two videos just as they are and ignoring what a can know, I prefer PSX's video.
Note: (We all know and it's obvious PS2 has more potential for graphics, I'm just comparing the two vids as they look)
ElBribri 2 years ago
One mor time: it is only a tech demo!
In the tech demo for PS2 u only c Rinoa and Squall - the background dancers r missing and the lightsetting isnt that bright like in the PSX version. If the lightsetting were the same and the background dancers were there it would b just the same...
Zyntheria 2 years ago
psx looks better by a mile
sidney765 2 years ago
lol. you have to understand that the ps1 cutscene was pre-rendered movie, just a video file in ps1 format.
on the other hand, the ps2 tech demo scene was real-time. real-time, meaning that's how it would look in-game.
what's amazing is that the ps2 real-time graphics looks as good as the ps1 pre-rendered cgi.
as the others pointed out, if you compare real-time scenes between ps1 and ps2.... ps2 wins by extra miles.
ninjutsu02 2 years ago 5
The PS1 version is better, th movement are less stiff compared to the PS2 version.
clock02 3 years ago 2
looks to me that riona's hynopsise works in ps2 than ps1 but i still like ps 1 better, the backgrond and atmosphere are better.
kyx4 3 years ago
thats because the ps1 version is pre rendered.
SelfDestructiveEnt 3 years ago 3
hehe looks like squall improved in dancing ^.~
domie200 3 years ago
Why compare when one is rendered in game and the other is FMV? Silly video, really...
tobbaddol 3 years ago 4
they are both previously rendered videos using a games engine. I don't see why you wouldn't compare them.
WNxAkira 3 years ago
No. One is using a games engine, the other one is a pre-rendered CG movie. Of course the latter looks better then. What's "amazing" about it is that it looks like that and not being pre-rendered. Comparing them proves nothing, really
If there should be a comparision there should be between in-game graphics in the PS-version and this one.
tobbaddol 3 years ago 2
To show how close the PS2's in-game graphics capabilities have gotten to matching the FMV graphics of the PS1 generation.
Xyex 2 years ago
I would prefer the PS1 FMV compaed to PS2 3D graphics.... look more real , giving me a '' i am in game '' feeling
impheton 3 years ago
I think the orginal FF8 Looks a bit better, maybe that's just the PS2 version was still in works
ShadowClark143 3 years ago
That's because the original PS1 version is pre-rendered FMV while the PS2 version is in game. Thus the PS2 version was done using the same characters you'd run around on the world map or fight monsters with. Imagine the FF8 character battle models doing the dance and compare that to the PS2 demo.
Xyex 2 years ago
Just so you guys know.. the technology that they used for the PS2 Tech Demo eventually ended up in Final Fantasy X. Claiming that it "doesn't work" is a pretty stupid argument.
Klaitu 3 years ago 3
Tell them(Square) that...LOL!!!
KyranSparda 3 years ago
obvious,PS1'CG is better than PS2' realtime Graphics.
aikikax 3 years ago 14
@aikikax
I think PS3 real time can beat PS1 era CG. At least most of the time.
Usul573 1 year ago
@Usul573 well ff13 definatly can, the gameplay almost looks as good as it's CG
DaRkLoRd1061 1 year ago
@DaRkLoRd1061
They're working on it, but I don't know if the PS3 will be powerful enough to do the latest technology that they've done to improve that
Usul573 1 year ago
The ps1 graphics did look better, however, since the ps2 graphics were in-game, they did a good job enhancing. I hope they do remake this entire game for the ps2 or ps3 with all those graphic enhanced features.
slayed84 3 years ago 4
Thats was real time? That make ss since as to why its wasn't better then the PS1.
Bazement258Studios 3 years ago
but but wers the FF* in the PS2 now?
thers ps3 now but this Game is not reales yet???
juliaheartz 3 years ago
Yeah, the original looks better obviously thanks to it being an FMV, but the PS2 one is more fluid. Still, that's so stupid, why showcase next gen graphics by translating a good looking FMV into a not-as-good looking normal cutscene?
RadLink5 3 years ago
I'm totally agree with you... Maybe they translate it to show how fluid they move? and the real time CGI, maybe if they had remake the game to the PS2 we will had the chance to play with the characters looking like in the CGI... I think that's what they was trying to show us or whatsoever
elessarelendil 3 years ago
hte original looks better, the PS2 one looks less detailed
grantscoolio 3 years ago
the PS2 is In-game graphics...the PS1 is just CG animation
alef321 3 years ago 2
That's because the PS1 version is an FMV cutscene; the graphics are digitally created. In the PS2 version of the dance, it's the actual PS2 graphics engine character models.
Either way, it looks fine, but I'd prefer the PS2 version just because I'd love to see the Ragnarok monsters in PS2 format. XD
IfTheBannersFall 3 years ago
i still love the ps1 version... originals are the best!!! can someone remake them or make a movie out of it??? i mean like the ff7 advent type
rinoalouise 3 years ago
The PS1 looks better due to it being FMV but id imagine if this was redone on a PS3 and then compare the two the PS3's would look alot better, Finally we are able to play games that match and beat the FMV we all drooled over in the late 90's early 00's.
mandude83 3 years ago
End of the conversation you can insert the ps1 disc in the ps2 and it will look the same like the ps1,so ps1 and the ps3 suck.hehehehehee
hineskamau08 3 years ago
FF1-2-5-6 remake for DS=Awesomeness
FF7-8-9 remake for ps2=Win
Sefirosu88 3 years ago 4
agre..would be awesome,FF7 ,they have the models,ya kown the Dirge of cerberus one so would be more easy ,if i was square i would do reamake of all FFs for ps3/ps2/xbox360/PC
alef321 3 years ago
the problem with this video is the one on the left is bad quality but the thing is some people might say that the one on the right looks better but in fact the one on the left is what could of been actually gameplay models but the one on the left is a CG sequnce
stephenduffy12345 3 years ago
the one on the left is better coz it's only a pre rendered cg but. but what more if it was fully rendered. so yer basicaly correct.
madeo 3 years ago
I think the reason that these two shouldn't really be compared is that the PS2 doesn't appear to be in FMV format. It looks like a regular cutscene(ex:from ffx) The PS1 looks nicer.
I think it's interesting though, too bad they probably wont make the whole thing like this ; ;
Syris427 3 years ago 2
dude it was right after they got back from dollet and graduated into SeeD, wow if u would love a remake and shit how cant u even remember that part?
metallicaowns58 3 years ago
ups i said it wrong,i tried to say that i ve seen the one in the right screen, the one i have never seen is the one in the left, terrible mistake lol.And i still remember everything about ff8 every single moment,i ve played AND finished that game a lot of times.its one of my fav games on ps1.
JunDageki 3 years ago
wtf was the dance in the right screen? never seen it, still like the one in the left,i would love a ff8 remake or a movie (Like advent children) that game was cool and seeing ff8 in a better graphic would be awesome.
JunDageki 3 years ago
it was in the game......
lilcrzytimmy 3 years ago
i thin it looks different because the psx one is a movie and the ps2 one is the actual models
luis0x0x 3 years ago
the PS2 version is showing "realtime" gameplay dance scene compare to PS1 "prerendered" scene ...u can see its realtime scene is quite similar to FFX gameplay scene ..
brutiicornelius 3 years ago 2
been wishing for awhile for an FF remake even if its ps2 xD
AnBanXD 3 years ago
the first one looks like the actual gameplay then a cutscene
JuicyGirlys 3 years ago
the ps1 version was pre rendered... it is like putting a video into the game basically. the ps2 version is using hte ACTUAL graphics set. so much :x
sushiserv 3 years ago
I think the PS1 version is still better. xD
Aidanadia 3 years ago 3
So this means square has been doing tech demo's for a while >.> lol guess theres not gonna be an ff7 remake after all :(
hiaamvlooser456 3 years ago 8
Um, the tech demo doesn't have all of the characters because it's a tech demo, not because the graphics engine couldn't handle it. They weren't trying to copy or emulate the original, just show the processing power of the new console in comparison to a pre-rendered video on the old console.

AH XD 0:35 at the PS2 demo... That's just wrong. Men shouldn't be allowed to move like that XDD
MysticHedwig 3 years ago
Both look very good, but PS1 version is better. It has more characters and the floor has reflections.
menmau 3 years ago
I agree with you - I feel the greater level of activity makes it more impressive. However, the PS1 version is an FMV sequence - looking at the PS2 version, I think it's meant to be a demo of potential in-game graphics, so I don't know that they could cram as much in to that. I'm not disagreeing with you lol, just saying.
jpm2k6 3 years ago
that's because the ps1 version is a prerendered cutscene, the ps2 version is real-time graphics
Marowe9 3 years ago
Yup. Immagine FFVIII with FFX graphics... :Q_____
alfofer 3 years ago 5
i would love that
Juicyjitup 3 years ago 3
yeah i think i like the ps1 version better
JoeyPezoa 3 years ago
Thats because it was rendered on a PC, the PS2 one was rendered by the PS2 in real time.
This video is stupid, it isn't even a real comparison.

DonMasakoni 4 years ago 6
YEAH! a ff8 remake on ps3 or xb360 would be REALLY nice!
anomalix 3 years ago
Yeah but sadly that ain't gonna happen.
If any PS1 FF game gets a remake, it's FFVII. No, I'm not a fanboy. But it's so overwhelmingly popular and stuff, SquareEnix would be stupid not to remake it.
hardroc 3 years ago
the ps2 version is good, but it doesnt look like its finished yet. imagine how it looks when its finished. i also like the original one too. but i never played the full game of ff8.
dontbyvista 4 years ago
I like the ps1 verision better i was lucky to has the game still do.
HInaIchigosBerry 4 years ago
I must inform you that the PS2 version was a demo for "in game" graphics it was not pre-rendered and fixed as an FMV.
If people are going to comment saying "PS1 version looks better," perhaps they should consider that the PS2 has essentially gotten PS1 FMV standard graphics in actual gameplay, AMAZING!
If this PS2 version was rendered as an FMV, the difference would be far greater!
saelaird 4 years ago 2
ps1 version looks better. but yes i understand the ps2 is far more powerful and it's quite an incredible leap from fmv to real time rendering!
lochiebrad 4 years ago
You have to remember as well that the PS2 was just a demo- it was not MEANT to look good...
I agree that the PS1 FMV looks better but also that it includes more people.... So if they matched it perfectly or rendered it FMV to the new engine then it could be pretty remarkable.
Ultimately I think it was just a stepping stone to FFX... no real intent to make a quality product.
korusi 4 years ago 4
Indeed, the In game graphics were more rough on the PSX, The Demo just prooves it can have better looking characters.
Nitemare292 3 years ago
The PS2 version was actual in game footage, not CG, now imagine how it would look if they cranked it up to a CG movie?? Thats the point..
Adacor 4 years ago 4
Well said.

i'll look like ff12 or ff13
godslayer137 4 years ago
Wait, i'm confused. Are they going to do a remake for the PS2? If so, then I haven't heard about it.
CheroNika 4 years ago
No, it's just bragging about ps2's graphics, they did the same for FFVII on the PS triple. Looks sweet though.
Tyranitar635 4 years ago
Yea I agree with you. Why are they keepin us at the edge of our seats? lol I hope they make a FF8-2 I mean c'mon, they got like, all kinds of sequals for ff7. lol
jadak 4 years ago
Yeah, that would be pretty cool it they did that. Maybe like a year or two after and some new calamity arises. So many people would want to check it out.
CheroNika 4 years ago
Heck yea!! We would be the first ones to check it out LOL
