Combining HDR and CLS is also an option. A bit of fill/bounce flash can open up some of those dark corners and helps to reduce noise in the underexposed shot. It doesn't require an elaborate set-up. A single speedlight off camera should usually suffice.
This is setting up a straw-man. Should be HDR vs. terrible lighting, as lighting was flat and even on-camera flash for one. Reminds me of Vicaso's comparison. Truth is I use both since some situations work great with HDR which is faster, however many do not, yielding a surreal look. professional lighting can typically beat HDR and gives much better results in many situations. -BP (27 full-time year pro)
Ok so im quite a few years behind this videos post, but, as far as I know, HDR and composition processes have enabled HDR tech + post processing tech to get really close to that CLS setup, But yes, that CLS does look many times more apealing than the HDR, and HDR alone is fantastic in its natual form (correctly composed)...A medium between the two I think would be spot on....either way, its nice to see a side by side comp of the two. great small clip, cheers.
