It is great if people can achieve relief through orthotics, stretching & other conservative approaches. However, for people like me who have failed to achieve relief, surgery seems to be the only answer. I had my left foot done 3 mos ago. I had a Gastroc release (to remedy the tight calf muscle) & a sinus tarsi implant (SubFix from MMI) Good results so far. Had right foot done 2 weeks ago. Will update as healing progresses, but I am very encouraged. It is one of the least invasive surg. options
i want to thank you for these information. Now, i understand exactly why i have this pain and always everytime shin splints, as soon i start sport again.
Can you tell if there are cases where ppl reversed the effect of having flat foots ? Is there any chance you can train you feets and legs to handle this pronation ?
I iam curenntly refusing to wear orthopaedic shoes or devices for the rest of my life. But iam afraid iam making the wrong choice

This was very helpful. The part about the shin splints at the end was so illuminating to what's going on with my legs/feet and reason behind the shin splints. Thanks, Doctor Davies!
So if I have plantar fasciitis, should I be using crutches? At the moment, I don't know what I have. I don't have enough money to see a podiatrist. The pain is in the outside of the foot from the arch down, but not really in the hell itself. I have flat feet.
i have flat feet and thank you doc you helped allot and for the muscles on my feet i dont train much my legs i only train my arms but my legs are 1000x bigger then my arms i have massive foot muscles
