They are people that have been killed by aliens. Their dead bodies are then reanimated, causing them to attack and kill others. It's a cryptoquote. one letter simply stands for another.

all you have to do is take the shortest word, and say for example it was a one letter word, you would guess that it was either i or a. you would guess, arbitrarily, a, and then substitute all corresponding letters with a. and then you would try and find a two or three letter word that now contains a, thus narrowing down those options and you would continue to use the words you found by tests.

Only if you Continue a New Game Plus in the same difficulty. Whenever you start a New Game on a different difficulty for the first time, you start fresh.

Only if you go to "Continue Game" and start a New Game Plus. It should say "Round 2" somewhere when you save. It'll begin the game from the very start, but you can do that over and over within each difficulty for as many rounds as you want to.
