Vietnam, PRC and India are examples of relatively less developed countries that have moved away from pure Socialism towards a free-market economy, and have benefited. China and India being a few of the world's largest economies owes to the fact that they combined both elements of Socialism and Capitalism.

The Russian economy grew faster under Communism than almost any nation in the world. Russia went from being one of the poorest nations in the world to one of the two super powers in a few decades. However the economy had a lot of problems with it since it was completely centralized. I think I rather choose capitalism but I would ad a certain regulations which may probably end in a mixed economy, because full capitalism may lead to monopoly and to corruption, but at least unlike communism (from the historic point of view) it doesn't promote total corruption and authoritarian regimes by giving the state full power and control over private property and peoples money.

@Rab1975bit you must then also consider that communism has few good things. A separation of wealth makes for an equally poor country. My home country of Cuba for example is dirt poor. Sure capitalist ideas promote selfishness and greed, but also opportunity and choice. For people are as they are whether they are communist or capitalist. There could be a greedy capitalist but there may also be a selfless one.

However the economy had a lot of problems with it since it was completely centralized. For example one year no tooth brushes were made since the people in charge of manufacturing forgot to add them to the list of products being made.

How can anyone watch this movie with a straight face? It's like a combination of Dragnet and middle-school propaganda films on reasons not to smoke marijuana; that is, it's completely devoid of reality. I certainly agree that the Russian Revolution fell far short of the original Marxist, Anarchist and Socialist goals, but that has nothing to do with those political philosophies. The Revolution failed because Lenin killed the real revolutionaries in a coup, and other leaders did the same thing.

Communism is just an example of utilizing the hegelian principle with the goal of transmitting power from one group of people to a new group. In case of Russia, this new group ended up being much more oppressive than the Tzar.

I think I rather choose capitalism but I would ad a certain regulations which may probably end in a mixed economy, because full capitalism may lead to monopoly and to corruption, but at least unlike communism (from the historic point of view) it doesn't promote total corruption and authoritarian regimes by giving the state full power and control over private property and peoples money.

Democratic Socialism and Social Democracy (different things!) nowadays have nothing to do with Socialism of the USSR or GDR though. It's completely different.

As any serious reason why we should no build a real socialist democratic state, in the most advanced society we can, to-day.Most of us in the Capitalist world have nothing seriously to lose in a revolution againstCapitalism. Modern socialist economies with present technology has nothing to do with any illiterate Russian method, in ages when such tools did not exist. We can make this work for democracy.

@ss90ss444 Acutally under communism you could still own private property..such as a house, condo or apartment, a car, washing machine, TV..etc.
Communism just nationalized the businesses...the means of production.
Now they have reversed that process by privatizing all of those state businesses.
If Russia had continued along its reforms being made before WW1 they would have eventually achieved what they have now...a democracy...but the reforms were coming along too slow for the people.

But, without vigilance of the people over their gov'nt you have what the U.S.A. has now. I'm so sick of people saying capitalism is the best system and no other idea could ever work. And you're right on about the selfishness and greed. @Rab1975bit The human heart is deceptively greedy all on it's own, socialism can also encourage greed, AND laziness, AND lack of motivation to do anything at all to get your family ahead, since all of your hard work you are forced to share, often with others who don't work hard and so your work is spread so thin it isn't worth it for you to try to improve conditions for your own household. Don't kid yourself, look at the documentary BBC did on it, studies show that greed encourages progress.

If anyone bothers to read what Marx, Engels, Lenin, and Trotsky all had to say, they'll see exactly why a red revolution was necessary. They'll also see why Russia had a succession crisis, and why steps needed to be taken against counter-revolution. Stalin was right-wing tyrant, and if Trotsky had been in his place the world would be a very different place today.
