  • all time hit!

  • Stephen Morris had just joined JD/Warsaw at this point, and this great track is taken from his first ever gig with them.

  • Joy Division's music is extraordinary and inspirational :)

  • technically this is Warsaw, same members, but before they changed their name.

  • Their manager, Rob Gretton, had them drop the fascist imagery and thought them fools for using it. Hook and Sumner admitted to being intrigued by fascism at the time, Morris insisted that the group's obsession with Nazi imagery came from a desire to keep memories of the sacrifices of their parents and grandparents during World War II alive. He argued that accusations of neo-Nazi sympathies merely provoked the band "to keep on doing it, because that's the kind of people we are".

  • I' m sure that's Bernie...

  • So who shouts 'You all forgot Rudolph Hess'? Is it Barney or Ian? Because according to 'Control' it was Barney and it certainly sounds like him. But Debbie says in 'Touching From A Distance' that it was Ian. I'm not sure who to believe...

  • @SpanishAtHeart2010 To me it sounds like Ian...

  • @mylomaster many sources say that it was Bernard Sumner.

  • @suzisuzanna Could be, could be. Anyway, what's the story behind mentioning Rudolph Hess (They talk about the nazi who fly to the U.K. during WW2 right?) ?

  • @mylomaster exactly. I can only guess, but maybe the problem was that the RH is surprisingly forgotten for most of people... Ask someone of your friends for the names of the ww2, and they say 'Hitler, Göring, Ribbentrop, maybe Goebbels", but Hess? From what I know, he had idea of the common fight GB and Germany against Bolshevik Russia, but most people I know (I'm Polish) have no clue about it.

  • @mylomaster Imagine how the world might look if he is executed, if the JD members live in this world. heard since childhood about the war, then perhaps this reflection occurred to them. what if? Indeed, this fits Ian's interest of the Reich.

  • @mylomaster

Rudolph Hoess was Hitler's assistant, he was kind of like a vice president of sorts.

  • @SpanishAtHeart2010

I believe it's Bernard that says "You all forgot Rudolph Hoess!"

Though I would say go with Debbie's vote on this because media shags everything up. XP

  • @BassPr0digy Use your own ear man. It sounds like Barney, it IS Barney's voice.

  • @SpanishAtHeart2010 ive given up trying to distinguish between ian and bernards voices

  • @SpanishAtHeart2010 It was Barney, Twinny told me so !

  • questo sì che è vero sound ...e che voce grazie ian!!!

  • This voice has a rage!

  • @drepmore < what a tool

  • I have the original vinyl for this. And the flexi disc of New Order's version of Ode to Joy.

    Am I rich?

  • All Over It Ian My Son..

  • they were punks at first,as many guys at this time.....remember my youth...

  • Bit of a Rollings Stones/New York Dolls/Stooges feel on this one

  • such diversity <3 best band ever r.i.p. ian

  • fucking hell, great sound for an early live recording. awsome

  • Almost had my paws on the original vinyl! Must be worth a quid or two

  • Inteesting the first verse is taken from 'Money' by the Beatles, rare for Curtis to usurp lyrics. For the rest of the lyrics and for that matter all of his output, you would be hard pressed to find a better lyricist

  • @punkpanther42 Excellent analysis- not quite word-for-word but close. In fact, Mr Curtis did use what he read for many songs. All the best.

  • I just can't be bothered to make an effort here at all

People make your paying contributions all too small

I just can't be bothered to make an effort here at all

People make your paying contributions all too small

At a later date, I'll be awful great

At a later date, someone somewhere blew it

    At a later date

  • At a later date, it might come out a fright

At a later date, I hope that you're alright

Human beings are dangerous and they call me in the dark

But everything gets twice as cold in marching for a lark

There's loads of things I'd like to do if I could find a time

Working really tires me and I think I'll turn to crime

At a later date, I hope they start it soon

At a later date, before we hit the moon

  • Why must we be put down when we try to get away? Why must we all grow up when we could just play and play? Good things in life are free Can't buy everything, that's true Only one thing wrong with that What I don't buy I don't use Only thing I'm thinking of is why are we all here? There must be more to do at nights than drinking rotten beer The world's a very shady place and you can't trust a soul "Grin and bear it" seemed the thing when it just gets a hold
  • why is this rare - i have got this footage (I was there!)

  • @punkpanther42 i've seen JD twice,first in brussel,second in a'dam!!

  • id like to know the lyrics to this

  • love to know the lyrics.

  • This group was always ahead of their time, and gems like this song continue to surprise me!

  • in '77. woah this is 1 of the earliest ones. lil ian aww...

  • This is from the "Live at Electric Circus" 10" LP. It's the first time they played under the name Joy Division.. Before that, they called themselves Warsaw (after David Bowie's song on "LOW"; from the start they called themselves "Stiff Kitten"..

  • have you all forgot Rudolph Hess!?

  • this is warsaw song not yet joy division !!! taken from a live compilation album released on virgin records which could have done much better sound wise !!!

  • Where do you think Nazi punks f-off came from? They were hard core. You could here it in many of there songs. The name "Joy Division" and then "New Order" are you serious?

  • i love how you can hear the little second of hesitation from bernie before saying something the rudolf hesse line

  • good song!

  • Warsaw, Joy Division, New Order..... awesome

  • fuck yeah when they were WARSAW!!!

  • never heard this before, but now i love em even more.. great upload, thanks..

  • i've had this 10" EP (33 1/3rpm) for years-Buzzcocks,The Fall,John Cooper Clarke,The Drones,Steel Pulse and Joy Division...Called Short Circuit-Live at the Electric Circus-Looking forward to seeing Hooky and Friends down here in Oz September......R.I.P Ian

  • live at the electric circus me thinks long time back l8 70s

  • whats rare in the disinfo age ... meh

  • It's rare because it's taken from the Live at The Electric Circus EP (and thats vinyl for all you youngsters out there!) , they never made that many hence it's very rare

  • Is "The Ideal Beginning" available on mp3 format?

  • @Erikih um you mean the 'An ideal for living EP' ?? if yes, I have it on mp3, if u want

  • @mrdejavu088 Actually i meant "The ideal beginning", it was the first EP from warsaw. But i got "An ideal for killing" wich has 2 or 3 ep's on it including "An ideal for living"

  • Not come across this Joy Division song before thanks for uploading. Oh and Joy Division did benefits for Rock Against Racism, so the naarzi tag is bollocks. Ian jumped off stage to batter some idiot NF supporters who turned up to a gig to disrupt.

  • JD RLZ! ;D

  • LLIC

  • Rudolf who?

  • i love this

  • awesome song!!!

  • They were still called Warsaw at this point.

  • This is what i needed

  • 'At a later date, I'll be awful great.'

    Oh hell yeah (H)

  • It is to my ever lasting privilge that I can say I was there at the Circus the night they recorded this.

  • wow!!! fair play mate amazing what was it like???

  • @amadeus you nazi fucker..

  • @TheLoyalSkeptic Hey, that would be a good name for a band! The Nazi Fuckers!

  • deeper sex pistols, lol.

Well, very powerful but still doesn't sound beautifully Joy Division yet.

  • @pudekcufsisiht I'm a massive BEATLES fan & people say "what" when I say JD I my second fave! SEX PISTOLS ace but 1 good album! JD CHANGED ther sound 3 times in 3 years!! I mean the Lyrics alone!!! too good!! JD did't even reach ther peak! N Order were good but with IAN shit ther would have been no U2!!

  • BLOODY HELL - someone with exactly the same taste in music as me!!!! I thought I was the only one who loved BOTH the Beatles and Joy Division...

  • BLOODY HELL - someone with exactly the same taste in music as me!!!! I thought I was the only one who loved BOTH Spandau Ballet and Joy Division...

  • great

  • fantastic!

  • Lol i just love that line "you all forget about Rudolph Hoess?"

  • one thing that has bothered me since i first heard them in late 79, where did his voice come from? you hear the warsaw stuff and it's like this; shouty, punky and by their own admission not very good. Joy Division came along and so did THAT voice so was it a Martin Hannett invention????

  • Tons of bands would love to eventually craft this sound, and Joy Division started out like that.

  • Omg so goood! Curtis sounds here extraordinary!

  • Thank god they didn't stick with this sound..

  • you all forgot rudolf hess.

  • @UltimateVenom can't remember every Nazi that flew to Scotland to try peace and instead was life imprisoned.

  • It's like your there!!! this is outstanding!!!

  • warsaw actually:)

and ive got to say that this is pretty shocking compared to, well, any joy division song!

  • ESTOS ES POST PUNK LO MEJOR

  • Comment removed

  • la voz es de ian curtis?

  • La que dice al principio 'you all forget Rudolf Hess' es Bernard Sumner, pero la canción la canta Ian Curtis

  • i seen them before they were "famous" and curtis's voice was really raw back then before joy division days, to be honest they never stood out at the time, i wish i'd payed more attention to the gig ! but hey, these things happen eh! the bar !

  • yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa fuckin hell

  • ????

  • Oh, I meant that it smells marvelous!

  • This is, so raw and impressive, u barely know its Joy Division an impressive band, this is a classic

  • This track is immense, it's their first truly classic song. It's also great because Ian sounds like he's really going for it and enjoying himself a great deal.

  • Comment removed

  • damn i can't recognize Ian's voice. he could perfectly have sing in a streetpunk band at this time !

  • I think they were street punk back in those days, called themselves Warsaw back then..

But indeed, this is his voice before he sounded like a 'depressed Mr. Bean' ( no offense, i did read that in a comment once)

  • Aye thats true.... They where stiff kittens before warsaw though! ;)

  • No, they werent

    it was simply suggested

but ian hated it because it was just like every other punk bands name

  • they made punk rock

  • @mylomaster tThis song is off Electric Circuit. an easy find

  • yea joy division could of been a punk, and they till would of been epic

  • Favourite band Warsaw/Joy Division by a mile. I never get bored of them and their CD collections are immense!

  • ohh fuck Warsaw THE BEST !!!

  • I can't believe that is Joy Division! Sounds so.......Punk!

  • "YOU ALL FORGOT RUDOLF HESS!"

    Fucking top.

  • @barrasse what's "fucking top" about a shout out to a Nazi?

  • @SoulstylistJukebox It's not a 'shout out' to a Nazi.

  • no se porque escucho esto pero es lo mejor que hay es tan underground hoy que hay 5000000mil bandas de punk caretas

  • I wouldnt call this version "(rare) "... it sounds muc better tha the one on the warsaw album... this soong has somekind of positive power to me thats strange form Joy Division / Warsaw, and only happens again in "Dead souls"

  • 'thats strange form Joy Division / Warsaw, and only happens again in "Dead souls" '

You could say it's a rarity then don't you?

  • this early stuff really kicks ass!! full marks mate

  • @mylomaster it's a rarity if the album "live at the electric circus" is no longer available being that it appeared on that album, though the album a 10" vinyl record was perhaps only pressed in limited numbers anyway. SO yeah in that context it is rare.

I suppose that no-one else followed the same path as these and this being an early piece by these (the Warsaw version highlights their actual stage of development as a band/musicians) then that by association says a rarity.

    thanks for uploading.

  • @SKIZINGDRUG it is more euphoric,not happy

    halleuah for Joy Div

  • @SKIZINGDRUG It's very rare, its the infamous 'you all forgot Rudolf Hess' live performance, one of very few recordings of them playing live under the name Warsaw.

  • ATALD still sounds really fresh and still packs a punch after 32 years. Joy Division are a steel toecapped jackboot kicking the asses of lesser bands.

  • They're not/weren't Nazi's because the Zionist journalists like Jane Suck would have continued to rag them into oblivion so they chose a career

and a life instead, unsurprisingly but like most Gentiles-Great band and made the Sex Pistols

look like like Hebrew art school rock 'n' roll.

  • This is Warsaw in its Prime Raw and Straight up Punk Rock as hell

  • The best line "good things in life are free, thats true, only one thing wrong with that, what I don buy I don use" AMAZING!!! read the lyrics on Google they TOO FUCKIN GOOD!!!

  • rudolf hess for life.

  • fucking genius!

  • Rudolph Hess!

  • I love all the Warsaw tracks, damn this is so fucking amazing.

  • Wow, amazing!! Thanks for posting...Lovg live Ian

  • *deep breath*

I think this song is better than anything they ever did as Joy Division.

    *runs and hides*

  • it does sound good, ian sounds like gg allin here!

  • Comment removed

  • Probably the best of the Warsaw-era tracks. Thanks for posting this.

  • No problem, ur welcome

  • Prince Henry weared a nazi uniform as well at a party....

  • Thanks so much for posting this, a really rare treat! And guys, please forget all of this nonsense about Ian Curtis being a Nazi. Ian's interest in Nazis goes right along with his fascination with the darkest side of human nature. Put simply, humanity, collectively, was an "Atrocity Exhibition" to him. If you check out the lyrics to "Dead Souls," you'll see him referring to various bloodthirsty conquerors, such as "conquistadors," who "keep calling" him. And I think they called him to write.

  • it was also vogue to be a nazi in the 70s

  • em considering theyre not nazis ure mistaken...

  • At a Fancy dress ball, joy Division used to wear Grey Nazi Uniforms to do gigs before they developed their image proper, bear in mind that the Holocaust TM wasn't invented till the 70's so the brainwashing didn't kick in till the 1980's.

  • Ian Curtis wasn't a fuckin' nazi. Get outta here.

  • @motiongraphics81 He was conservative, at least he voted the Tories.

  • @motiongraphics81 SPAAAAAMMMMMMMMMMM

  • This is an awesome LP, Live at the Electric Circus.

  • Rudolf Hess a man of peace? FFS he was at the centre of the worst attrocities commited by man.

  • Not true. You've obviously been brainwashed by too much TV, you shouldn't believe anything about the war, especially about the Nazi's. History in written by the winners the way they want the world to know. British Military intelligence made up most of the Nazi crimes.

Hess wanted to stop a potential war wiv Britain which Churchill wanted, campaiged for & deliberately provoked the Germans into.

Hess aged 90 was hanged (murdered)in his prison cell by British SAS men posing as investigators.

  • Hess was actually 93 when he was hanged from the light flex in his cell faked to look like suicide!

  • well done histrokia for trying to educate the brainwashed i've tried but in the past just failed and labled a nazi sympathiser lol sheeple are sheeple i suppose still at least we all agree on the genius that is joy division.

    x

  • he flew to England in 1941, so he wasn't at the centre of the worst atrocities.

  • No Rudolf Hess went to Scotland to get some powerful aristocrats under his control to get England out of the war in order to revive his high status in the Nazi regime.

  • nice try

  • Hess, Rudolf was murdered by British intel ...

  • Crap, not Joy Division.

You want to be a Nazi, fine.

Do You unrighteously claim other peoples music to?

    Wrong.....

Joy Division once stopped a concert because

the skins there went nuts and violent.

    They never had Nazi sympathies.

    Good try though.......

  • yes it is

    look up warsaw

  • Not to mention Joy Division played the "Rock Against Racism" benefit show as well...Yeah that sounds like a Nazi thing to do huh?

  • Ian Curtis started some of his by using the prison number of Rudolf Hess in as a count in, Ian was Nazi the use to wear Nazi uniforms to gigs, I knew him in the early 80's.

I was also there the night they played this gig at the electric circus it was the same night Elvis died actually.

  • typo, Ian started some of his songs by using the prison No...

  • Ian Curtis mentioned Rudolph Hesss prison number 31G-350125 in the song Warsaw in October 1977.

  • great job douchebag

  • is this really joy division? o.0

    that....doesn't...quite sound like Ian Curtis.....

  • yes it is, thats how they sounded in the beginning

  • You don't kw JOY DIVISION then! litsen to NO LOVE LOST or FAILIERS

  • Rudolf Hess was a man of peace...who flew to Scotland to try to stop fellow soldiers of britain and germany from killing each other and fight the real enemy..

  • ...and deserves to be forgotten

  • who is rudolph hess?

  • He was a nazi, Hitler's deputy

  • yeah just looked him up on wikipedia!

  • you all forgot him :p

  • why close the electric circus?the fall, the drones, buzzcocks, steel pulse(who like ganja who like herbs?) and a funny punk beat poet name cooper comething who have not seen a nipple in the daily express probably to occupy by is outer space monster of a wife

  • john cooper clark

    chicktown

  • chickentown

  • Great early recording of a great live band, was lucky enough to see joy division / warsaw live. This version I think was recorded at Rafters in Manchester, if not at pips.

  • I never heard this live! This is even better live!

  • in fact i think this song has been recorded at the last concert of the Electric Circus, a famous pub in manchester, before it was shut by the autorities...

  • according to the back side of the LP it does indeed

  • I lived next to there,in Collyhurst.

  • He says, "You all forgotten Rudolph Hess?".

  • today it's the 31st anniversary of this recording... can't believe it!

  • damn yes, a long time ago, but it didn't lose his power and originality

By the way, you have some real relaxing music in your channel, is it made by you?? Sounds pretty good to me

  • thanks for asking ;)

It's a couple of bands we produce. I am in an independent label named IAP and we have some new records released.

Maethelyiah, the singer, is mad for Pink Floyd, Joy Division, 60's 70's bands.

One of the amazing things of JD is that the band is timeless. We listen today like we did

    30 years ago. Simply timeless.

    So glad
