Do you take a starting and finished gravity reading? I forgot to test when I started now I'm 7 days into and the bubbles have slowed a lot, but I have a gravity reading of 1132.
1l alcohol requires 1700g sugar, 1kg sugar should be around $1. The cost of the sugar is not the main concern. The cost of yeast nutrients, specialized yeasts (lalvin EC1118, a specialized yeast from Canada is cheap at around 40c to $1 per package and ferments to 18%), the cost of water, the cost of heating the still, the cost of cleaning the still out so you can distill again with more water all adds up. Conservative estimate would be about $10 for 5l @ 100%.
