  • It is jsut a game, but some people live off of what they make on that game.

  • as a matter of fact Second Life is NOT a game but rather a virtual world or immersive 3D platform, which enables users to create and monetize their own digital content. A lot has happened since I first filed this reportage in terms of stability and usability, acceptance and growth of the platform. Users range from roleplayers to educators, ueber-geeks and YES: the US government :)

  • @draxtordespres ....It's a game dude, no matter how fancy it is. Yes people make real money, but still. It's a computer game. Wether you try to put a fancy label on it and go "It's not a game! It's a virtual world!" it's still the same thing...Nothing more than a game, you just put too much time into it. You should go outside for a bit, it'll do wonders.

  • @Left4Epic outside??? where is that?

  • @draxtordespres Outside is a MMORPG where your character goes outside. The graphics totally blow though.

  • jesus ...its just a game

  • I was there LOL!

  • Linden Lab SUCKS, we whant casinos back to SL

  • I can help you out if you still play

  • You would think the end of gambling would be a good effect on crime levels within SL ,sadly this is not the case , now there are many more devios schemes in place to take your money, spaming "make money " HUDs that do quite the oposite ,charging money for freebies, the con artists now use bots to make up traffic on land and steal from campers,

  • I can give you a LM to my casinos

  • It is a typicaly american stance that Linden Lab have taken, pretend that in their country its totally illegal to gamble so they have to comply with that , WELL BULLSHITY TO YOU MR LINDEN ! your country is a foul festering heap of gambling addicts and for you to say "ooh nooo thats not us" is a total fucking lie , I point at you and scream in your face "DOUBLE FUCKING STANDARDS !"

  • hahahhahahahaha

  • I Remember The Protests. It Was Really Bad. Tons Of Griefers Showed Up Too.

  • what the hell did they put 2:22 up for

  • 2:22 is gold

  • HaHa goodbye rip-off gangster casio owners, find a new way of getting money for nothing from gullible idiots.

  • Lol. And you're saying buying virtual clothing or whatever else virtually isn't?

"find a new way of getting money for nothing from gullible idiots."

Yeah, I guess selling virtual goods isn't a way of getting money for nothing.

  • Someone in this video reminded me of a point I've been bringing up ever since this hit. The law is discriminatory against disabled people. People who cannot get out of their homes easily were able to enjoy this type of entertainment, and now they cannot.

  • In other words, a law was enacted.. probably snuck in via the fine print of some other law... by some RealLife casino money to stamp out competition and force people to physically show up to their establishments.

  • If you are pissed at Linden Labs for this, then you are pointing the finger at the wrong place. Where you need to be pointing it is at your Government they are the ones that enacted this internet ban on gambling, LL is basically a giant 3 dimensional Web browser with unique user created content. And it is an online service and since it was an online service enabling people to gamble they had to abide by the law, fight your government not the people who follow the law.

  • When I found that the tax on my cigarettes had been raised almost 40 cents I did not get angry at the store vendor. I got angry at the State Legislature and LL is basically a giant Vendor that offers a service. It is not its own government.

  • The law says that banks cannot process transactions from gambling sites. There was no "ban" on gambling.

The argument in this video says that Second Life acts like a bank, since it holds onto and processes currency. However, I have to disagree. To say Second Life is it's own bank is exactly the same as saying all other Poker or gambling sites are acting like banks, since they hold onto and process currency, as well. However, they're not banned.

  • I have to say, i think its rediculous when to many RL laws get involded ina virtual world that is suppose to be run and created by the residents, not ruled and controled by LL. Keep Casinos and Gambling in SL.

I understand some laws, being applied, but not havning casinos and gambling, now thats

stupid. Ill join in the fight :)

  • casinos still exist in second life, they are just 'underground' now.

It just geos to show who the conformists are in the game and who the leaders are.

anyway second life is so boring now without gambling is like a bunch of camp zone clubs and malls now.I hope it goes out of business, everyone just idle in second life and dont pay or play anything, lets see how long it lasts.

  • All the casinos are just Zyngo houses now. Horrible that Second Life just took away all that property, without providing compensation to its players. Shows they don't care about the average player. They just care about their own butts.

  • agreed neo when the public eye is turned from somthing LL really dosent care

  • you could destroy villages with 'orcs' in SL if you scripted it you moron.

  • Great Report, thanks ;)

  • folks told me they liked SL gambling because you are there with others in Real Time and also that SL gambling is more amateur friendly and not dominated by the pros....

  • I play SL, and I've always found the gambling kind of fun (aka, I'd only bet 10$L in total, and only used it once I earned it from camping), but once people started taking it into their only source of incoming,

it goes too far. I think it's good that they banned it in second life. Just drive to a casino or go to an actual gambling site.

  • The closest casino where I live is a 2 hour drive away. It's not a convenient thing for everyone. Plus, gambling online requires minimum deposits and cash-outs. Not to mention that there's so much security crap you need to go through with the card (provide info that it's yours) and half the time the sites don't even accept US players, since there's so much red-tape in the US.

SL offered a simple solution and got rid of all that red tape. I had turned my tips from DJing into $100USD.

  • if i may recommend some of my "older" work? "Dora, the Explora", "Social Justice" and perhaps "SL4B"? Thanks for the comments :)

  • yes, well done

  • javit, what a nice thing to say :) we try our best given the time constraints of RL.....

  • Top notch reporting!
