i drove a 71' 440 -6pak Challenger a long time ago..top Banana with a black top, pistol grip 4 speed.. shaker hood one of 127 made..build date on the car was 4/1/71 one of the last ones made!..the car had drum brakes!!...all go no slow...lol
the one and only 1970 dodge challenger, there will never be a car quite like that, there are alot of close ones but if you ever drove a challenger you know what im saying! a guy flying down the road,in a open road listening to the sound track you gotta love it baby!! live forever Kowalski! love you man!
VANISHING POINTIS AND WILL ALWAYS BE A REAL MANS CAR MOVIE! ITS SO COOL AND REAL. I CAN SO UNDERSTAND THE WHOLE MOVIE ITS IS A FREEDOM OF THE SOUL BEINGING IN A 1970 DODGE CHALLENGER FLYING DOWN THE ROAD THERES NOTHING LIKE IT!! TRY IT YOULLE SEE:) LOVE LIVE KOWALSKI:)
I was lucky enough to help build a challenger that looked just like this. with a 440 with 2 4bbls i built for it we had her running 165 on US 41 in indiana. an it was still pullin hard. but ran out of straight road. one of the best cars i ever drove.
Yep, The Camaro was being towed by one of the Challengers used in other parts of the filming (a 383, I think). From what I understand, a cable about 1/4 mile long was attached between the Challenger and the Camaro. The 383 was equipped w/ an automatic transmission to lessen the slack in the cable.
Anyone who loves this movie owes it to themselves to watch the 1994 movie TERMINAL VELOCITY, directed by Richard Serafian's son Deran, in which Charlie Sheen drives a white 1970 Dodge Challenger. Unlike the cars in VANISHING POINT, however, the Charger in the later film really DOES meet an unpleasant demise. :-(
Some answers for you mopar dudes. 5 challengers were lent out to make this movie. 3 autos and 2 4 speeds. all had to be returned to chrysler after the movie was finished. It was a 67 Camaro used to be towed into the bulldozers . no motor or trans to lighten it up for towing.1 challenger was never used so it was returned unhurt. believe me or not but chrysler crushed the cars when they were returned. no reason was ever given but imagine what they would be worth today to big money collectors.
Huge Thanks for posting this song . One of my all time favorite movies . I tried and tried to find this song and never knew the name.
p.s. my idea of a PERFECT movie night is Vanishing point followed by two lane blacktop . Id like to own the challenger one day but right now im building a 55 chevy similiar to the tlb car.
The crashed car, likely is not the Challenger, I bet, could be 67 camaro. But, it's Hollywood, a deceptive industry, make believe, illusion, etc. V.P., was a low budget film, my fav movie of all time, n likely used a junk car, to save money.
@drsangle LOOKM CAREFULLY AFTER THE CRASH,, WHEN YOU SEE THE TRUNK PANEL IT IS CLEARLY WRITE camaro dude i'm a proud mopar maniac I know what i'm talking about
yeah they crashed a white camaro. Big deal its movie an old one at that. The message is whats important. An american hero and patriot choosing to die on his feet rather then living on his knees! Kowalski lives in us all. Wake up demand your freedom back.
@67DieHardPatriot454 He was a Hero, even tho He did suicide. Message was, the system screws ya over, if ya don't play ball n be a crook.
He decided He had enuf, lost His lover, She died while surfing, got busted for protecting the young girl from rape, set=up. Did Viet Nam, etc. His choice to go, I respect that..
I got the rockin', rollin', reelin' feeling. What a great car the original Challenger was, none better. It was a great big middle finger in their face. Kowalski understood. Do you?
Man, Thanks A LOT for posting this awesome soundtrack from one of the GREAT movies of the 70's......ahh makes me wanna hit the road in my old 1972 Monte Carlo :)
I will never be ashamed of running a 71 Challenger to the limit and blowing it apart. Fuck it. We had a great time. Kowalski would understand. Do you?
@GetStuffed88 its amazing when u watch the movie in th3e end its a 67 camaro thats blown up!! not a Challenger they never wanted to wreck the car just a dime a dozin camaro!
hey robertmack 34 look carefully frame by frame zoom in the wreck at the end you could clearly see a camaro tag upside down near the trunk, plus the hood, when he smashed the bulldozers, is totally not a mopar one . Dont worry. This firebreather big block racing piece of warhorse Mopar still exist, but not the few(3-4) they use for shooting this movie.
Something I'll have to live with forever. It was a great car. It went out in style, racing an Impala, the engine blew apart when it redlined. It's better to burn out than to fade away!
@bunkieb00 The last song playing, when He slams into the dozers, is one of 2 or 3 of my favorite ones. It has a unique up beat quality & a punch, to it.
its all about pure euphoria, he is high on amphetamines which is one of the most brilliant highs ever. he was above all, feeling the pure rush believing he would carry on through feeling inviciable and happy, knowing what was gonna happenhe knew it was his his time in a speeded frezy n kept going thinking " fuck it!" absolute legend, suicide at its finest, leson too us all, we have too let go sometimes n jus sayu fuck it im where i wana be and happy, how can u get a better high than that?
The movie is about Speed, the drug, not the velocity, that what they didn't understand when they tried to do a re-make of this movie. The remake sucked because they tried to explain rationally the speed induced feeling of suiside that was the real vanishing point.
The ending (and, by extension, the overall theme of the film) has been the source of much debate. The viewer is left guessing why Kowalski insists on driving to San Francisco immediately and then drives heedlessly across four states to his death. Kowalski himself says only "I gotta be in Frisco 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon." And when Jake scoffs that he's being put on, Kowalski says, "I wish to God I was."
Barry Newman offered his interpretation of the film's ending in an interview printed in the March 1986 issue of Musclecar Review. He said, "Kowalski smiles as he rushes to his death at the end of Vanishing Point because he believes he will make it through the roadblock." The August 2006 issue of Motor Trend magazine has a sidebar with Newman, in which he explains that Kowalski sees the light glinting from between the two bulldozers.
To Kowalski, it was still a hole to escape through. It symbolized that no matter how far they push or chase you, no one can truly take away your freedom and there is always an escape." Newman also theorized that the entire film itself was an essay on existentialism. Kowalski drives to drive, with no real purpose for doing what he's doing. He decides to give his own life its definition and meaning, with complete freedom over his actions
Sarafian explained that he wanted to make Kowalski appear otherworldly, and that the world within the film was a temporary existence that he was just making a stop in. And at the ending of the film, he was ascending from this existence into another (and even points out that the lyrics of the end song point this out, "when the light of life stops burning, till another soul goes free
This is probably an old issue, but I have never seen an answer. The car that crashes at the end of the movie is not a Challenger. I don't where Kowalski is, but the Dodge he was driving is not burning between the bulldozers. Wheels wrong, no scoops on the hood as it flips, "ro" left of the emblem on the quarter panel (Cama "ro"). Part of the script or did they run out of Challengers?
on director commentary they did for the dvd director said they used a challenger "deputy" the weakest version with no hoodscoops crap wheels and a slant 6
if you watch it at the end when they put the fire out you can see a man in a bath robe take out what looks like kowalski's head and shoulders...just thought i'd share
They only had four Challengers and wrecked a POS Camaro for the finale. Of course all four VP Challengers are missing and presumed having a good time. Don't destroy Challengers!!! I wrecked one and will forever feel the guilt.
it was a '67 camaro that was used as the crash car because dodge didn't want a challenger destroyed on film. From what i read it was said that dodge would disallow use of the challenger in the movie if one was to be intentionally destroyed, so the '67 camaro was picked because the cars had nearly identical streamlines and with the blur from the speed it can be passed off as a challenger to the average spectator. I may be right, I may be wrong but it's what i read and it makes sence to me lol.
yeh the car was a camero, as it was seen to be a very bad move to crash an burn a 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T 440 6+, they where hard enough to get hold of as it was without them taking one off the road, so they went the cheap option ( back then anyway lol ) and got a camero
@hcbrown1 I am a huge fan of the video, own it, there is directors commentary and he says the car they crashed at the end was a challenger deputy, the deputy is the optioned under version with cheap everything (including those steel wheels) and a straight(slant? whichever was available) six, they towed it at that speed using a chevy suburban. since the challenger was a new model and they had an "indy" budget they didn't have too many
@ElCastrador --- I have a vague recollection of the director saying this, and being a bit puzzled at how he could be so utterly wrong. If you look at the wreckage of Kowalski's car during the final shots of the movie, it's clearly a CAMARO (with badging visible in one shot), and not a Charger at all. The story goes that the Charger actually towed the Camaro into the bulldozers.
@Coolestmovies Challenger not charger and also a suburban towed the car into the bulldozers, but honestly I never saw a hint of it being anything other than a challenger, also the steel wheels on it after the crash were mopar steels not GM.
how do I know? I'm obsessed with cars to a large degree, plus I've looked at buying cars from all the big three and recognize the different steels they've had over the years.
@ElCastrador --- My bad on the Charger. It's late here. (I do know which is which. Had a Challenger in the family for years. Gone before I could drive it :-( ). HOWEVER, watch your DVD again and see very clearly that the car crushed in the bulldozer scoop IS a Camaro (the name's even visible in one shot). The only reason the wreck has Mopar steels on it is for a visual match with the Challenger (or Challengers) seen earlier in the picture, but it's NOT a Challenger, it's Hollywood!
@ElCastrador ---- Incidentally, I clicked on your channel page and noticed you're 22. It's cool that ANYONE your age is heavy into cars, but I've got a few years on you. I'm 41, on my 7th car, and was alive when these gems were still common on the street. Sadly, by the time I could drive, they were all "collector's items" and largely out of reach, so all I had were fond memories of being a passenger. I may get these two names mixed up, but my obsession's as deep as yours, I'll bet! Cheers!
@Coolestmovies It's a shame there aren't many young kids into cars that much anymore. I'm 17 and there was literally one person at my school with an interest in cars but he graduated. It's parents faults, though. My father started my obsession early.
@ElCastrador ---- Oh, and one last thing. Serafian makes other mistakes on that commentary track, so I wouldn't take him at his word. I'd have to listen again to pick them out, but I remember raising an eyebrow a few times while listening. ;-)
It was not a Challenger that went into the bulldozers, they used a 68 camaro. Of course after the crash you'd see the steels on the car because they'd want you to believe it was the Challenger. Watch the movie and pause it just before he hits the dozers, then look at the tail lights. The '70 Chally and the '68 camaro had very similar body lines and at that high of a speed, they can pass off for one another. Dodge did not allow them to destroy a Chally. If you know cars, you'd notice the lights.
I want to re film the ending of this movie where he pulls over , puts his hands on the bonnet and gets arrested, and as he gets put into the back of the divvy van, the camera pulls away and every one cheers for Kowalski, that's a would be a great way to stick it up them blue meanies. I used to be a blue meanie and I love this movie.
hey dudes I am nearly finnished restoring my exact replica lookalike 1970 challenger here in australia. got me a 440 in it pistol grip change , and I have written on the back window KOWALSKI LIVES here in the outback of australia. CIAO DUDES
@moparbros hey man I'm from downunder too , lets go cruising with some supersoul music baby......... I used to be a blue meanie but I love the freedom of this movie, the music, the sound of the car and just running away being free.
@moparbros just started on a vauxhall magnum 1973 converting to 4.6 v8 we don't get muscle cars over here in uk so gotta make your own n this is as close as your gona get however doesn't stop you painting it cream white and using some imagination hehe
YEAH ! i have been looking for this track for such a god deamn long time :)thank you for uploading. The greatest scenne, when Kowalski drives 'to death' with a little smile on his face...it is such a sad, and beautiful moment of whole movie.
LOve this song, really sets the theme for the movie, but the ending of the movie should have been , he pulls over and gets arrested.
