  • kicks ass

  • the other night i was listening to this. the first few notes made me feel really emotional. this might sound like a load of shit but believe me, i was nearly crying. tommy has really torn at my soul. no other band has ever done this to me. this is why the who are THE best!

  • Duimpje als je zin hebt in de top 2000! Lekker plaatje dit!

  • The 12 people who dislike this video are the people who ask "Who's this?" The rest of the 518 say "The Who!" They reply, "Who?" Long live The Who.

  • That was Woodstock's performance...

  • @espanaguy wrong butthole surfer. filmed at ilse of wight in 1972.

  • @rlkavan Ah crap ! :D Been corrupted by Pete's clothes... ;-)

  • @rlkavan Isle of Wight 1970. It was the same festival that Jimi Hendrix played at.

  • from 3:05 - 3:32... i can play that over and over all day.

  • Wow. Grateful to these guys as I was "back then" only still

a child..., a small child only, and growing up surrounded by all this music, i do remember and i do still experience this as a Most Great Gift.

  • We all fail to see hear and speak, tommys all of us. Get it?

  • I just got Tommy today!

  • @minamu8 wow way to go! I'm 41 been a Who fan since I was your age. I'm excited for you. My favorite songs are Sensation...Sparks/Amazing Journey ..and Underture. glad to see the youth today with good taste..rock on

  • @minamu8 better late than never..........lol

  • You people should quit this "best bassist contest" and accept the fact, that John was a great musician and probably the most suitable one to play bass for The Who.

  • first time I ever heard the Who was this song ona Claritin commercial over 10 years ago. just a kid then but something struck me about it i vaguely remember my parents mentioning the name Tommy... then couple years later i was watching the post 9/11 concert for NYC. The Who came on and I've never seen such a crowd so ecstatic. I knew there was something special about the Baba O' Riley riff. dad told me it was the Who & 6 years later 3/2007 i saw them in concert as a high school freshman.

  • no one has mentioned that pete wrot all the songs, on his own such talent

  • Please do not forget Keith who's pure energy is enough to send echoes into the Great Beyond

  • Pure pioneers of rock,,,,,,,one of the first coliseum bands they filled huge venues in the 1960's before anyone else did..............killer band and so young and soulful.

  • @gtrmike the beatles were the first actualy...BUT the who are XTRAORDINARy!

  • @rapidJesse Like I said, one of the first to do it and they played large venues...

  • @gtrmike Yeah

  • gone but never 4gotn rip john

  • The Who in their prime.....THE BEST......but they needed an organist here.....it would have helped the overall sound......still, they are so great...

  • fenomenal!!!

  • trash. all this group seems to know how to do is whirl their arms around

  • @Piglatinsuperstar

Apperantly you're not familiar with their studio work I suppose? Go troll somewhere else.

  • found my love again for the who! see me feel me touch me ! gods!

  • the best live band ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Pete almost sounds like Fall Out Boy when he's singing "It's a Boy" for the first time.

  • The who is like a band in which all the four members are the best in thier respective positions, truly one of the greatest bands of all time!

  • It also makes no sense to compare them on the same level, as they are such radically different artforms. Do you view Matisse's artwork as inferior to di Vinci? You shouldn't, because to create a peice of art to get your feelings across, no matter the medium, be it music, art, theater, it's an amazing thing. Whether you view it "worthy" of being compared to Mozart and Beethoven makes no difference. Remember, they too were the rock stars of their days. Especially Beethoven,he was the weird one:-P

  • To all those who view rock as a lower form of music, you should really take a music appreciation course or something. I've been a classically trained musician for ten years now, both vocal and instrumental, and there is possibly no more difficult music to perform well than American Rock. It takes every bit as much talent, if not more, for a guitarist to play in a good rock song as it does the principal violin at the NY Philharmonic. ...

  • @shstrumpetgurl me too, and i must say, i love all kinds of music. i really apreciate evry kind of music. thats what being a musician is about love the art asnd the collours of your songs and melodies

  • where are the great musicians these days? the who, stones, bowie, zeppelin, kinks....too many to nam are all like the founding fathers. the framers of the constitution were great men, genius and have never been equaled. (lincoln excepted) nobody has ever come close to those bands and it's been 40ish frikken years now. where are the new brilliant musicians?

  • @youmeddlingkids Get your head out of your ass. Good music is still being made. As soon as you take off your rose-tinted glasses, you will start to see.

  • I have this DVD and love it more than any of my other possessions. Long live The Who!

  • this so epic the who the best there ever was

  • i luv this song & the album!!!

  • WTF? Who are the 8 persons who don't like this video?? You have shit on the ears guys!

  • @killdianette lady Gaga assholes are infiltrating the hallowed grounds of REAL Rock & Roll!...all 13 of them.

  • Gosh I hope one of my favorite Who tributes reenacts this in August!

  • Only The Who could write something as epic as Tommy's "Overture," with all the horn, keyboard, and guitar parts in it, then perform it live with only four people, and still make it sound so fucking cool.

  • jd c cooool jkonéssé paa

  • ISLE OF WRIGHT 1970

  • who rivals Mozart ?

    yes who ?

    certainly not the Who

  • @alcore3 How can you compare them??

  • @alabhaois just answered to a guy who compared it to Mozart and Beethoven !

Rock music is "nothing" compares to classical; it can be joyful and funny, but this is not true music, just for fun, and it s true, no comparison should be made

  • @alcore3 actually all kind of music is music, so,you cant say that this isnt true music, couse if you were a musician and music apreciator like i am, you would know that each song has its own collours and its own feelings like isee, so apreciate all kind of music with no prejugement, an dont consideer peoples arts inferior to anothers couse you woudnt like people defaming your art. peace and love my brother.god bless ya

  • @majinbunda i am musician and play 3 instruments; i can appreciate different kind of musics BUT i m aware of the value of wht i m listening.

to enjoy something and to evalue smthing is different; just logical distinction.

u can dislike something nice and like smthing bad

  • @majinbunda except rap cos rap isnt nusic its rythym aplied poetry theres no melody

  • lol. live on stage.

  • god keith moon was so cute... what a great drummer.. it pisses me off to see deceased musicians.. it's like.. "WHY!!"... what were you thinking,.,

  • oh my god... this was a big part of my life, the Tommy movie.. I saw it sooo many times...

  • Trt

  • What about MC5?

  • At the Isle of Wight I think The Who proved they were heavier than Zeppelin- you can argue if you want, but listen to The Who first..... This was as hard and heavy as rock could get in 1970!

  • what about black sabbath?

  • Listen to the acoustic songs by Zeppelin and you will notice they weren't heavy.

  • Yeah I know. But you always hear people talking about how Zeppelin _was_ heavy. This was kinda my point... And I do love Zeppelin, don't get me wrong.

  • the who live...

    need you say more?

  • this is Isle of Wight .. you need to look quickly .. John Entwistle is wearing his infamous 'skeleton' body suit .. he didn't wear that at Woodstock

  • Wow definitely not Woodstock

  • This song still makes my nipples stand up. When that church organ kicks in, holy crap.

  • @Chiffonade I do not know about your nipples or any other part of your body but where do you hear an organ in this piece?

  • @truvianni Hey Sorry for the delay in answering. The original studio album has church organ in it. It would be at about 1:27 in on this video (if they had someone layering in the church organ sidestage). Some bands who use additional instruments in the studio sometimes have additional talent onstage to play those parts.

  • @Chiffonade Im almost sure there is no organ in this piece perhaps in the studio album but not in what is heard here I know somethng about music I write a lot about opera and classical music and in all truth I do not hear an organ if you care to read my article please google my name "Gianni Truvianni"

  • @Chiffonade thanks to your comment i'm going through the same shit... great video

  • where's this video from?

  • I am pretty sure it was 1970 when I saw,"Tommy"..The Who did a USA tour just for the rock opera,"Tommy".At the time I was at Saratoga(in upstate N.Y.) with 34,000 people..I had to get down close because I think that Keith Moon is/was the greatest drummer,ever..and I remember loving Roger Daltry's clothes..It was a GREAT TIME:-)

  • @DeafFret

    Woodstock

  • this is from Isle of Wight - 1970. NOT Saratoga, and deff not Woodstock!!!

  • thanks!

  • woodstock

  • wooo

    barrida de poder!!!!!

    barrida de poder!!!!!

    barrida de poder!!!!!

  • They cut everything on this DVD its aweful not The Who but the way this dvd was made ...

  • agreed. I was quite dissatisfied after watching this dvd. but still, great music

  • @cjf799 what DVD is it?

  • OMG thats SO badly edited! thats almost made me not want to buy it :( theyv actually cut it so that it sounds weird and unnatural. :'(

  • wait a minute! thats not at woodstock!

  • @elkintobitle I think thats from Isle of Wight

  • It is...I just watched it.

  • it's confusing cause theyre wearing the same clothes as in woodstock and the background sound is similar too

  • Great. The Who: powerful rock!!!

  • look at the way they play dude.. they arent JUST rock. theyve had such an influence over punk too, its amazing! the who is just awesome!

  • John Entwistle "bassist of the millenium" and The Who greatest live band ever

  • bassist of the millenium... hmmm I would nominate Les Claypool if you don't mind but honorable mention is Flea. Open for intellectual debate

  • No I dont mind you nominating Les for Bassist Of The Millenium. But the vote is over and John Entwistle won. It is not open for debate anymore. The vote is in. So the honorable mention is Les and Flea. Cheers mate

  • Perhaps you can contact Bass Player Magazine and Guitar Magazine and go back in time and change it , cause the election of John Entwistle Bassist Of The Millenium occurred in 2000 cheers

  • while i must say Entwistle is great, and les claypool and flea certainly deserve their honorable mentions, shouldnt geddy lee, victor wooten and john myung getr their sot at the top?

  • Wooten NO! but the rest yes. Wooten is boring and lacks excitement. Geddy and Roger Glover and Les and Chris Squire are my favorites and of course the BASSIST OF THE MILLENIUM, John Entwistle

  • I would go with John Enthwisle. Then Geddy Lee WAY before Flea or Les!!!

  • @MrTrajan69 no way... best bassist is RHCP bassist Flea

  • @jeroener626 dear god i hope that was sarcasm

  • @jeroener626 lol the best bassist was Cliff Burton imo

  • @jeroener626 lol victor wooten is 10 times the bassist flea is.

  • Moreirino thats like your opinion man so stfu

  • Pete, keith, john and roger, what a perfect quartet, fuck the beatles, fuck the stones, the who has the best songs, however less popular they may be, a counter-current movement that led to the birth of rock as we know it, in fact, rock lasted as long as the who did, in my view, the WHO are rock, accompanied by other important stars such as hendrix and Joplin!

  • this is the greatest band. i once had a lady for a year even, was so much an experience for me.

  • howard hanson had this chords in his music book. it does change with merit-- all the cheering crowd doesn't really hear the music. it does not approach mozart.

  • I disagree with you on an emotional level. This is just as emotionally powerful as anythimg ever composed and performed by Mozart.

  • I saw this on tv the other day, and i have to say one of the best live performances i've ever seen. I really wanna buy the dvd now O_o

  • This is a brilliant and amzing opening to and album.

  • alwys my fav - this has been rockn' for how many years? wow, i;m old.

  • The absolute best LIVE band ever - with no close seconds!

  • what about...one word Cream!

  • they more skilled.... but they nowhere near the energy the who produced.

  • moonie, daltrey, townshend

    a leyend

  • its a shame you people forget entwistle.....the best bassist of alltime...

  • Seriously he really was.

  • the best among the best

  • @pcboxtox I agree

  • @pcboxtox Hell yeah!

  • @pcboxtox Those in the know will never forget John. I miss him terribly-- the best damn bass player ever

  • @pcboxtox Or maybe you just think we've forgotten about him, Because I definitely haven't.

  • @pcboxtox m8 gone but never forgottn rip john

  • @pcboxtox Yeah, one day in my car I was messing with the stereo frequencies and i isolated the bass and turned some of this shit on. Mind= blown.

  • Its one hell of a strong audience who can drown out THE WHO with thier applause!

  • This overture rivals Mozart's and Beethoven's overtures.

  • So brilliant.

  • Spectacular - Nevertheless - LP/High Fidelity if you want to experience the WOW factor ! The Breadth, Spaceousness, Fidelity (not so CD/compact) would make you want to spend the money on a high fidelity system. No Kidding !

  • oh my GOD!! I wish I could have been there

  • I saw The Who about months after this show. They did the opera and the Live at Leeds LP.. Still the best concert I ever saw...

  • This is Live at The Isle of Wight Festival... 30-08-1970

I just happen to have the DVD

  • I have it to.I like townsend being interviewed at the end saying he had nothing in common with the other 3 memebers of the band.Moon is in his prime here 1968-1974 considerd the best drummer in the world. His decline started in 1977 when he moved to california.

  • Thanks flippelolli! Awesome!!!

  • nice where dyou get it?

  • wow...

this is the same day I was born...

    lol

  • Does anyone know what/where/when this show is and how I can find the whole thing? PLEASE? THANK YOU!!!

  • It's the Live at the Isle of Wight '70 DVD. You can get it at pretty much and music store. It's awsome!

  • this song is so utterly brilliant that it boggles the mind

that guitar solo is one of Pete's best moments on guitar

  • I'm almost sure this is a song by The Who

  • DUH!!!

it's the damn overture to the Tommy album!

  • Hay any one like rock music in England London , should go to the Tune in , in Acton on Thursday night and hear some good music its free .

  • It's so sad what happened to Moonie. I can feel like they were like brothers and when Moon self-destructed that was a hole in their hearts from then on. R.I.P. Moonie (and Ox)

  • fuck i hate that when people act like they knew the guy ... we know hes dead its sad .. but dont act like you knew him and dont give him any nick names

  • Isn't this Live at the isle of wight?

  • Yes isle of wight. The old festie site is 20 minutes walk from my house!!!!

  • Cool, love the isle of wight, my Dad lives in Totland, beautiful place.

  • I love the bond between Townsend and Moon in this vid.

  • Entwhistle boring? you complete and utter idiot whoever you are!!!! John Entwhistle, was one the most talented and original bass players there ever was!!!! He was the anchor man for the who!! he was the "hendrix" of bass players!!!! R.I.P John Entwhistle

  • Oh, fuck, I really agree with it!

  • @tootstanner

In my opinion, I think that John was the rock of the band. The best, man!

  • all the who videos are being disabled- pretty much across the board-- bah humbug- I have a suggestion - why don't they offer a price to buy disabled music stuff?? Stupid business managers i think- I am not going to go out and buy a DVD of most of the stuff being disabled, but I might pony up a dollar or two if they said buy it or lose it. So they lose and we lose.

  • wow what amazing quality, is there a complete version? where'd you get this?

  • I believe it's from the Isle of Wight Festival 1970. It's availible on DVD and CD.

  • it is the Isle of Wright

  • I don't understand why Entwistle was discriminated by cameras...

  • Because he wasn't as active on animated...

He's amazing though! Long live the Ox

  • ur a dumbass

  • The Who is one of the greatest bands in the last 45 years......

  • Saw them in Paris, outdoors, May 1st, 1970. They are GREAT !

  • king... that's right.. thanks for reminding me.

  • I was touched by the noodly appendage of this song...the FSM is a cock garbler and penisz and stuff. HXC, word to the Menethol, nut.

  • i have the same guitar gibson sg but i dont smash it all to hell like he did befor

  • oh man.. I remember seeing them on Days on the Green.. and watching the "Tommy" movie a hundred times.
