I was just leaving work at the Stamp Student Union at 5 o'clock and I was walking passed the McKeldin Library when the wind just picked up out of nowhere and a leaf smacked me in the forehead and it actually broke the skin and it started to bleed a little bit. A leaf for God's sake. I made it to my friend's place ok, thinking it was just a bad storm. It still bugs me out to think I was only 300 hundred yards away or so when it was tearing through the North Campus.

i live in md and i was 2 when it happen, and it happen rite after 9/11 and my dad worked at the pentagon and only 2 ppl died in the tornado and they were my moms uncles friends 2 daughters and they attended the university,u can hear about it and its on a show called storm stories
this tornado scared the crap out of me cause i live in Bowie which is literally 10-15 minutes away from the school on the highway and i thought the twister was gonna head our way.
yep my dumb sister was still in her dorm room when this happened, she didnt even know what was goin on. she said she saw people running but thought it was a fight or a party lol
omgosh. just chanced upon this. I lived in denton hall (where this is filmed) last year. Wow...there used to be stuff in what I've always known as a grassy field. This is the same year as 9-11. Poor freshmen...
Buddy was in the library while it hit...didn't even know it. I missed this one as I had moved to Florida...kinda sucked, being that it would have been an easy local chase for me.
That twister was part of the "La Plata" system. Hell, someone even caught it on video as it traveled over the Rayburn Building and sent it to WRC-TV/NBC-4. It looked like a black possum tail as it traveled over DC--
THEN it touched down in College Park. I think someone even caught the pickup with the 2 girls in it on video.
@CosmicFunkOSMOSIS The F-3 College Park tornado was September 2001 and was a SW to NE system running nearly parallel to I-95 in Virginia and Maryland, therefore missing La Plata. The La Plata tornado was an F-4 in April of 2002. This system ran west to east, south of Washington D.C.
Thanks for refreshing my memory. The thing I will remember about that 7 months is that it was active. It still proves that given the opportunity, even the National Capitol region gets twisters (hell, I'm old enough to even remember the Richmond Tornado of '73!).
I was driving on 495 when the tornado came toward me on the highway. I saw the funnel come out of the sky and it sounded like a train coming and my car was being pulled. that was the scariest day of my life. I just put my foot on the gas and passed all the traffice ahead. Didn't know if it was going to come straight down the highway or way. It was rush hour so I drove around all the cars that were stopped on 495 south. CRAZY.
the damage was so specific to that part of campus. I was in Leonardtown when it hit and it seemed like any other storm. I was shocked when I went to that side of campus later that night.
I've heard of stronger tornadoes (F3+) hitting the DC area, but it was still unbelievable when I saw this one. Then there was that La Plata super twister that following spring!
I remember this like it was yesterday. It was my first semester of my senior year when this happened. I was living on fraternity row at the time, so the tornado was WAAAY on the other side of campus, but we all still def saw it. Scary scary stuff.
i remember this day, i was 5 years old and ma mom and oldest brother where in alaska and my dad was at work in varginia and it was me my brother and sister and grandma and the trees were flying everywhere and it was an f4 tornadoe when it hit beltsville
I will never forget that I was working at Persicion Tune on rt 1 in beltsville and I was watching the weather report and they said a strong storm cell and then my shop forman came running in saying there saying on the radio a tornado was shooting down rt 1 look at side sure enough all you saw was a half mile wide funnel coming straight down rt1
We're blessed we survived it! We just had a broken window in our condo compared to other people who lost their properties. My heart goes out to the 2 young ladies from UM who died. RIP!
I will never forget that day. We used ot live in Montpellier Village @ Beltsville, MD. I was on my way to get food from Shoppers Food warehouse when my neighbor warned me a tornado coming in 5 minutes. At first I coudn't believe it until we saw, it was coming our way. My husband and I grabbed our son and our puppy to the basement until it was over. The scary part is when we were trying to get to the basement door and the wind open the door almost took my husband away.
i remember this day. i was in either middle or elementary. my mom came home early cause of the warning and my older bro was outside riding his bike somewhere. crazy my mom was freaking out. i was so scared. didnt know they had a cid of it on here
I witnessed this tornado when I was driving down Rt. 1 It was hard to believe what I was seeing given that is is very rare for this area to get tornados.
So distructive
