@RocknRolla410 it will remove most dent 's the issue is the finish doesnt allow the steam to get to the wood, as stated below i have gotten dents out by slicing the finish to get the steam in, but it has also damaged the finish , so its a tough call, if it were bare wood not an issue,,, but the finish could be damaged,,
@NOOBONROIDS14 it may, the issue on the bat is they are often finished, and the moisture has a issue getting to the raw wood, if the finish was re oved it would work,
Making a Morris chair out of pine. I put a dent in one of the arms and was going to try to sand it out. I watched the video, tried the water trick, and it worked! Many thanks!
@SFODDshadow im not sure bamboo is quite hard, as well it would have a finish, its questionable if the steam would get to the wood , and if it would damage the finish, I have removed them on ocassion by slicing the finish with a razor blade, and simply putty hot water on the dent to soak , but try a hidden area first..
@KissakiSan hickory is a very dense wood, and strong, but I would think over time repeated steaming and dent removal would result in the wood fiber being weakened,
@greyhall1 I would not use the alcohol on a finished piece, using a damp cloth and a clothes iron often will swell them back out , but go easy the moisture and heat can also cloud the finish... its hard to get the moisture into the wood because of the finish.. so again go easy..
@greyhall1 an old cotton T shirt would do fine, just good and damp.. the whole key is heat and moisture to relax the wood fiber and allow it to return
Any suggestions for "stained" stair treads, (Oak). Very small dents, 1/8" deep @ Max. But Home owner is an ass & requests entire staircase be replaced due to 4 small dents not visible from a standing position. (dam people!). Any advice? Will steam work through a stained and varathaned/laquered finish?
usually steam doesnt work thru a finish , but try using a sharp razor blade , make a clean slice on the dent to break thru the finish, then apply hot water , sometimes it will seep thru the cut and swell the dent out , you could also try a little steam, but go easy or you can damage the finish, when done a quick coat of wax will hide the cut, other wise just sand it down steam the dent and refinish, I wouldnt replace ,
I am new to your posts. I have been woodworking for almost 7 years. I do a distressing on the wood that adds dents, we actually hit it with a chain so the wood looks as though it is an antique. very cool tricks this will come in handy when i need to do a fine finish piece. Also does this work on hard woods as well as soft woods?
well i agree with that and thats why i said there completely different ... to add a counter example, you cant raise a dent from metal like you can wood ... but to be honest i dont know that much about working with wood
no .. 2 completely different beasts ... because some types of metal doesn't cut so easy + metal has a tendency to "Gawl" up and its very hard to make it look really nice and professional.
sometimes when u make a mistake with mettale u can fill it in with a weald or weald on anouther pice but i dont no that mutch about working with metal u cant realy do that with wood i my salf prefer wood

A snipe is wood removed as is a chip, this raises dents, compressed wood, it doesn't replace wood. It would not work on a snipe, I wish it would!!!!!
InTheWorkshop 4 years ago
great information, will this work on snipe? or would that be to much wood to raise?
