Sadly for them, the falcons did not hatch this year (2011). That opened the Precipice to climbers in mid-July rather than late August as in the past decade or longer. I didn't try it this year; I am 76 years old and a bit stiff in the joints. I did climb it when I was 65 and loved the experience. Thanks for this video. It has restored my memory of that day.
Just did this with our kids...no one had any problem whatsoever with it, but it's something that I wouldn't have done if I had known about the rungs and ladders ahead of time. We were with experience hikers who said it was nothing....!
Two Rangers, Richard Rechholtz, and Brian(?sorry!) Came with harness and plenty of rope. They assisted me the rest of the way up. They were professional and patient. And at least, they didnt have to drag me, or anything! Thanks for the vid. Nicely done:)
4JULY11, I completed this trail. I am terrified of heights. Those who've done it will know the spot that beat me: right after the only actual ladder, there are more rungs. Then a reach to the right. I couldnt do it. Went back down to the previous ledge, and called the Rangers.
at 10:50 that is the part i did not like during my hike. you rely on your footing and thats it. Sounds simple enough. Isnt always the case. I like to at least have something to grab on to. typo

have hiked the precipice wall/trail many times i love it. Sucks its only open for a short season because of the perigrin falcons. i gotta give the guy taping it some credit. My first time up i crawled during a few parts.
Hey all, I just posted 3 new videos of great Acadia hikes if you're planning a vacation there this year. Check out my Jordan Cliffs video, Bee Hive and Canon Brook up to Cadillac Mountain. More on the way - planning another trip in May and then one in August...can't wait!!!
MrYaketysax - thanks for the compliments...I'd love to come out to the Pacific Rim and do some shooting...I'll be posting 4 other Acadia hikes and a couple from Zion...the Precipice is a blast to hike/climb and it's hard to feel that on video. Glad I captured some of it for you.
This is videotaping at its best under pressure! Kudos to the quality, narration, and conveyance of the sense of peril which distinctly portrays itself to the audience.
We need your film making skills to be able to obtain a sense of the "West Coast Trail" in the Pacific Rim National Park on Vancouver Island, Canada.
Jeph629 is it good to be cautious on the Precipice but it's not something to be afraid of. I have done it on extremely windy days and the exposed areas higher up can really get windy - I have also done it on wet days and you just have to go slower and confirm your footing. Rule of thumb on this hike - 3 points at all times - 2 feet and 1 hand on the mountain or 2 hands and 1 foot...all the time and you'll enjoy breathtaking views and a great experience.
Here's my suggestion...never if you can avoid it, take any of the Acadia hikes that have rungs, ladders or rails down. There is always a better way down these mountains. Backing down over rungs is very dangerous. For this hike, take the newly restored Orange and Black trail back down to the park loop road or at the sign post, turn right and skirt Champlain Mountain back to where you started the Precipice...it's fun and somewhat challenging coming down but nothing like going up.
Narration is wrong, your video shows EXACTLY how crazy it is. Hmmm...must do.

"no game; no joke" .........don't do this trail unless you're quite experienced, balanced, coordinated. Dry and non-windy days only.
