This definitely should've been kept in; foreshadows River's reading skills, fleshes out YoSafBridge's character a bit more--and why she thought Mal was so stupid for trying to protect her and teach her--and also provides an amusing insight into the child-like aspect of River's brain post-mutilation. After all, I think most little girls (around age 3 or so) are convinced they'll marry [Big Brother/Daddy/Cousin].
Shame they got rid of this. I think they could have easily removed one of cap'n's other scenes with yosafbridge, given that this scene conveniently included one as well, but I guess it's not my place to say so.
I think River should have married Simon... they were perfect together. In the future genetic anomalies will be neutralized, thus... it simply will not matter.
Too preachy. That's why it was cut. Preacy isn't Malcolm's style unless he plans to keep them around for long enough to see that his preaching takes effect.
@MorphyVSFischer It says a lot of things on DVD's that you shouldn't always take at face value. Like when a porn DVD says the girls are barely legal when they're probably closer to forty.
1: Mal all ready told Yosaffbridge that she could help herself to the kitchen. So, assuming you watched this and you didn't know what was going to happen later in the episode, why wouldn't he just say, "No, it's okay. I all ready told you to grab something if you were hungry."
2: He all ready gave her a speech about killing people who try to kill her, in otherwords, standing up for herself. This is repeating what he already told her.
More of this was supposed to happen in the fifteenth episode. River is telling a fairy tale to a group of children in it, and one of her quotes is: "And then the beautiful princess got tired of waiting for her -handsome prince- and tried to escape, but they found her and to punish her they locked her in a smelly, white, cold room where the evil blue demons strapped electrodes to her face and started to shock her. Zap, zap, zap, until she couldn’t stop screaming. Only no one could hear."
I remember when I was a kid, I would always ask my mother to marry. I didn't understand that we couldn't be married even thought we loved each other. It wasn't until later that I learned that marriage is for a different kind of love.
This scene shows that because of River's trauma, she hasn't been able to fully grow emotionally. She may be a genius but, socially, she's still a child. They should have kept this scene in.
That's normal. Freud called it an Oedipus/Electra complex, but he was sort of perverted and it isn't a sexual attraction like Freud thought. It's just a misunderstanding of marriage.
Some psychologists think that little girls that don't ever try to ask their father to marry them and little boys that don't ask their mother to marry them sometimes are homosexual. I'm pretty sure that's where the Stewie Griffin character on Family Guy comes from; he hates Lois and becomes homosexual
"Now we have to be married.. I'm in the family way"
Hahahahaha I love Summer Glau. Her adorableness makes me cringe. Even on Terminator! Thanks for uploading, babe :) Such a good show. I wish these scenes weren't deleted. Boo you, Fox for not being risk takers.
@kulashakerarol Actually, this scene was deleted by Joss Whedon and them. The episode was to long, and, while they hated deleting this scene as it was their favorite, they needed to because it was the least plot-relevant.
'Course, FOX is still an idiot network for cancelling the show, more like than not for some stupid reality tv show that didn't make it half way through the first season.
@Joshua5003 Oh. I didn't know that. I got into the Firefly fandom pretty late. Thanks for the info :) Also, I meant SCRUNCH my face, CRINKLE my nose not CRINGE lol. Just clearing that up.
@kulashakerarol Speaking of Fandom, the girl who plays Kaylee had her own ideas for how the series would turn out:
Inara would proffess her love for Mal, . . . while dieing in his arms. Realizing how short life is, he professes his love for Zoe, who promptly punches him.
Jayne and River would break off from the crew and get a different ship, both on. Jayne would say that River is the best pilot he's ever seen.
Also, Jayne and Saffron are a couple, and Jayne's pregnant.
I just love how Simon takes care of her...I've always wanted to have an elder brother. After seeing this I just want my mom to adopt a loving brother for me lol
Rather than childlike innocence, perhaps she's operating more out of desperation. Book is avowed to celibacy, so with Mal married off by whatever means, then the only two eligible men on the ship, e.g. in her world, are Simon and Jayne. Given her antagonistic relationship with the latter, perhaps she had decided that incest was the better option.
As for the "She's a thief!" That could be a manifestation of her psychic abilities, knowing Saffron correctly before the others got any indication.
There is just so much I love about this scene...but I really can't stop laughing at River's dismissive: "You're a thief" comment to Saffron. The way she says it seems to translate to: "Either go away or stop pretending, because you're really starting to annoy me, and this doesn't concern you anyhow"...or am I reading to much into that? Oh...oh god the lame pun. (Facepalms.)
What I find interesting is that this whole conversation seems to have been spurred by Mal's "taking a wife." Listen to her tone of voice when she says that, and when she calls Saffron a thief--it really sounds like Mal was her first choice! First real canon indication I've seen of the Mal/River ship...
@Pegasus2o5 Mal taking a wife probably spurred in her the idea of getting married, she didn't show any interest in Mal at any point. And since she only loves one man on that ship it probably makes perfect sense for her to marry him. I remember my little sister telling my parents she was gonna marry me when we grew up, I tihnk this goes to show that emotionally and in many aspects River is still a child.
I always thought that a great many of River's crazy notions was her being pychic and saying things someone else had randomly thought. I think maybe River got the marry idea because the whole 'gift wife to Mal' incident made someone think in terms of marriage and River heard someone think 'Simon's as good as married to his sis.'
Simon avoided courting Kaylee in part because he's his sisters keeper, in a way River is his Ball and Chain.
@omgitsrobotz yes of course it was an allusion to her psychic powers. Also, you can support the movement to buy the production rights to firefly from FOX to make more episodes at the "helpnathanbuyfirefly" website.
@aradioactivedonut LOL yeah I know, I was just wondering if anyone else caught it. I love when she throws in those little comments and they either don't notice or pass it off as her craziness
i always loved river & book's relationship. i think that, had he stayed on the ship (and not died, obviously) that he would've become her closest friend. besides her brother, of course. they kind of bonded, i thought.
@TheXurol ...i'm not sure what you mean with "feel that way" but "in the family way" is being pregnant outside of marrieage and thus forcing a shotgun marrieage.
I think this shows River's emotional growth being stunted by her trauma; after all, I remeber being a little girl and telling everyone I was going to marry my eldest brother and we'd live next door to Mom and Dad. (My middle brother was not invited!)
@Citadel1221 Lol me too. When I was little I thought you /had/ to get married when you grew up, and I thought it would be easy if girls just married their brothers. Little kids don't understand romantic love. :P So you're probably right.
Lot's of great back and forths in this scene. But, I suppose it's poetic justice that a great scene was deleted from a great series that was canceled.
@HarryPotter812970 Not really. She thinks like a child, and when I was really little, I thought that I was going to marry my brother. I didn't understand incest back then. XD
this is really a cool little scene. river often viewed things the way a child would, and this would've been a good example of that. to a kid, marriage is just what people do when they love each other. how many little girls have said that they wanted to marry their daddys when they grew up? it's just a child-like notion.
@Onlera33 Indeed. But it's still sad Whedon removed it from this episode. On the other hand I'm pretty sure every Firefly fan has watched and enjoyed this special scene. :D
it's kinda funny, these are they/aren't they incestuous comments. It was never officially cultivated in the show. Mainly cause it was cancelled. But Summer Glau once admitted at Dragon Con or Comic Con "that she wanted to play a different Joss character, one who wasn't IN LOVE with her brother. This time. Joss also admitted he had initially written a "kiss" between these two. and said blatantly that he "shipped them"
Loved it! :) Joss was right, if you had to delete something that was almost 4 minutes long without corrupting the storyline, this was (unfortunately) the scene to remove. Still, loved how River is giving Simon such a hard time, and I love Mal really telling Saffron off about her supposed meekness. (She was gettin' on my nerves with that too.) Such a great line, too: "There are about 70 earths spinning anout the galaxy and the meek have inherited not a one of 'em."
What did River say at the end? Lol this video is funny, they shouldn't have deleted it 'cause if you pay attention enough, it shows River's psychic abilities as well as a funny peek into her insane world.
Well, actually I think that A is more of a plus for the character River. It shows of course her craziness but also how much she loves her brother, even if it's "so much" that she wants to marry Simon.^^
So not really creepy but kinda sweet n cute. :D It gives her a little more depth. And she talks more. I love to hear River/Summer say crazy things. (=
With Saffron you're right, I don't like that character...
(betraying Mel, trying to kill Serenity's crew ~.~)
@LynxOfDeath Saffron - played by Christine Hendricks, one of the hottest women on TV. Alright, not a good argument, but it needs to be reiterated every now and then.
she's so cute. it's nice to see her looking so happy, if only she wasn't trying to marry her brother. Did a commentary say why they took this scene out?
I love how many times Mal contradicts himself during his little speech.

@LynxOfDeath Yes, Tamcest. Some silly thing Firefly fans made up. XD I still wonder why no one picked up this show. It was great. =)

@SamND1967 You mean Browncoats, eh? :D

@LynxOfDeath Oh yeah. =) Forgot.

2:12 Man, River can make me laugh. Lol at her putting the pillow under her dress.
2:20 She's fixing it.
3:36 She's pregant!
Man, I miss this show.
One thing I found a little weird though, she didn't look like she was kidding.
Bet alot of Tamcest fans loved this. =) I know I did.
SamND1967 1 year ago 4
@SamND1967 What? Tamcest? That is soo hilarious. xDDD
I would have been great if another channel had picked up Firefly and continued the show. Sad no one did...

I love how she says she'll knit lol

The oddest thing about this is that it doesn't look like River is kidding. >.>

Like a child, River I mean. Like when brothers and sisters play when they're little little kids.

silly river lol

Haha, Saffron is really good at acting ;)

What did River say at the end? Lol this video is funny, they shouldn't have deleted it 'cause if you pay attention enough, it shows River's psychic abilities as well as a funny peek into her insane world.
AdrianMichelleHudgen 1 year ago
does any of this episode of insanity have anything in particluar with river's psy abilities? i haven't seen this episode

very well done scene. I think they wanted to remove it
A. They want River to be crazy but... that level of delusion pushes into downright creepy.
B. it has Mal telling Saffron to stand up for herself again, when other scenes establish and reinforce this without needing another refresh.
phantom12321 1 year ago
Well, actually I think that A is more of a plus for the character River. It shows of course her craziness but also how much she loves her brother, even if it's "so much" that she wants to marry Simon.^^
So not really creepy but kinda sweet n cute. :D It gives her a little more depth. And she talks more. I love to hear River/Summer say crazy things. (=
With Saffron you're right, I don't like that character...
(betraying Mel, trying to kill Serenity's crew ~.~)
LynxOfDeath 1 year ago 2
@LynxOfDeath No i think it shows that River, even in her craziness, loves to give her brother a hard time (like they used to)
razrblade0kiss0 1 year ago 3
@razrblade0kiss0 That's also a possibility. :D

@LynxOfDeath Saffron - played by Christine Hendricks, one of the hottest women on TV. Alright, not a good argument, but it needs to be reiterated every now and then.
xandirwasmylover 1 year ago
@xandirwasmylover I never said that Ms Hendricks is not pretty. But I'd still chose Summer for prettiest Firefly cast member. :D

@xandirwasmylover I agree. I love Summer a lot, but Christina Hendricks is ridiculously sexual. I love her. :-)

@xandirwasmylover You should see her on Mad Men.

Wow, this is such a wonderful scene. I wish they didn`t take it out.
Iceman2890 2 years ago 3
she's so cute. it's nice to see her looking so happy, if only she wasn't trying to marry her brother. Did a commentary say why they took this scene out?
barlin07 2 years ago 3
"The episode was too long and had to be shortened. Although everybody loved this scene it could be removed without corrupting the storyline."
Something like that. ;-)

There's about 70 Earths floatin' about now and the Meek have inherited not one.
And that is why everything that Mal says is awesome.
KrimsinYT 2 years ago 8
Oddly, she acts unusually sane in this scene. Obviously she's confused, but apart from that she's pretty certain of herself.

Such an awesome scene. Can't believe they deleted it. River was hilarious :)

My favorite deleted scene. Great to see it on YouTube. Summer Glau plays "adorably awkward" to perfection.
