This is why the model railroaders who claim their sound system IE Qsi, Tsunami, etc sounds real, are wrong. They don't even sound like 1/87 engines in HO scale. So to the Soundtraxx Mafia, blow it out your exhaust. I will keep my QSI units. They sound just as real as the Tsunami> another words, NONE OF THEM DO! PUTZ'S!
That is indeed an old old old Canadian tuned M3. I might be wrong, but I believe that is the 3052's original horn from when it was originally with the Canadian National. It still sounds good....kinda sounds like a Cadillac horn.
Some were naturally aspirated; others were turbocharged. Power rating is a good clue. IME a centrifugal blower means "turbocharged" since certainly (?) that blower is exhaust powered.
Man what a sound!!! I used to work in a sawmill and when we started the Cat engine (A smaller engine started the big one) it sounded just like that as it kicked in...Nice video...You like trains?, you'll love my videos, check them out and please comment...
I have both worked on this engine and run it and its counterpart, the 3051 (an S4). We can't fit a block heater. That won't help. Starter fluid is the only thing that works for these engines.
this is not an S2, this is an S7. I am quite sure that there is a turbocharger, because I have sprayed engine starter fluid onto it. it is located in the first door panel in front of the engineers cab window. If the engine is cold and requires starter fluid, i spray it onto the turbo as it spins, when he pushes the startup button.
ohhhhh yesssss!!!! I absolutely take an immense amount of pleasure in personally starting up the 3052. I love the *cough* smoke every time it starts. Make one of the 3051 starting, too!!!

Alcos: the best sounding engines ever made. I don't know why anyone would rather listen to some EMD piece of junk. :]

Very nice. That is actually very similar to what an 8-cylinder GE FDL sounds like when starting up.

I'd love to have a 539 on a trailer to take to shows. Tell me; do these have an electric primer pump or do they have to be manually primed?
douro20 3 years ago
Manual If i am not mistaken
chicagoboy2356 3 years ago
I could had sworn 539s used a centrifugal supercharger and not a turbo.

Is this the non turbo engine?
tpvalley 4 years ago
no. this is a turbocharged engine rated at 1000hp.
FL92002 4 years ago
u sure?
turbos have funny shaped exhaust, like a square to round shape I thought.
So is this an s2 then?

So u worked on this loco or one like it?
Cool.
Starter fluid causes cylinder wear at first, washes oil off, engines seem to get addicted.
Cant u fit a block heater?
