That's funny. I ordered and am now still awaiting my laptop with an expected delivery date a month after I placed the order. If you want your laptop customized, think twice before ordering from the Dell main website.
@StatuesBleedingGreen You won't regret it. These are probably the best people for getting your stuff customized. All the others pre-build their machines so you might not get exactly what you want. Dell also have one of the best customer services in the entire computer industry... the slight drawback of having to wait for your pc to be built is not a problem considering the awesome quality you're awarded with at the end :)

This is a classic example where correct use of technology can enhance quality, productivity and hence value to the customer. I'm sure the investment in IT would have been substantial, but at the end of it all, when the global customers are satisfied, it would be more than worth it! Well done Dell! Way togo!
If so much of their process is computerised, why have they let one of the most important elements of the process be conducted by a human?
I am talking about the parts selection for the 'individual' customers, if a machine is able to pack and move a finished computer, surely a machine can select parts and put them in a box?
I understand that a person will be needed for the assembly of the finished product, for now, but am I missing something here?
you have to imagine, the price of a worker per hour and the cost of taking a product back. I for example worked in a firm, that produced cooking plates for 5euro, but taking one back because a defect costs them 150€,so it may be cheaper and a better quality if you put a worker in there, then taking hundrets of pc's back because of a massproduction default
Dell kicks ass w/ this business model! One of the most challenging business models to run. Standardized components(even if there are allot of them) makes this doable.
