The "pricking to see if he's a warlock" thing came from the inquisition when people actually made money off of killing "witches". They came up with lies like if you prick a woman and she doesn't bleed then she's a witch. To prove this they would use a retractable needle and trick the townsfolk into thinking that the women is a witch. It's sad a pathetic really.
