  • Nice playing man, but I've never heard a neck pickup tone that I like. I can understand why Ozzy forbids his guitarists from ever using neck pickup.

  • @MrPomeroyWatson Yeah. The body/neck wood combo of the Jackson lend a very unique tone. The PAF sounds noticeably different in my Les Paul.

  • @MrPomeroyWatson Zakk Wylder used his neck pickup alot!

  • Best demo on youtube. 'Nuff said.

  • @BnHwrd Thanks man!

  • Would it be a good idea to put a neck AND bridge super distortion in my gibson les paul studio? Play everything from Sabbath to Radiohead, mostly rockin' stuff but still plenty of clean tones from time to time. What I'm really looking for is a nice Nickelback tone. (ha... that was a joke.)

  • @MarinatedTenderloins Haha, nice. It would certainly get you that nasty Nickelback tone in the neck lol.

  • is this guitar made of alder?

  • @magicthunder666 Yes it is.

  • This is an excellent demo. MIc'd Amp. Played the same thing on different settings, both chords and single string. This is how every guitar/pickup demo should be done. The only thing that could have made this better would be inclusion of some power chord and palm muting riffing.

  • @bgrossbe Thanks man, I really appreciate it. I thought the same thing and that's why I had decided to do it this way. You're right about the power chord/palm muted riffage though... I'll remember that for the next demos that I do!

  • You think I could install one of these pickups(DP100)into my Epiphone Les Paul Special II and be able to play some heavy stuff?

    (Mastodon/Gojira type music)

  • @crow66693 Hell yeah man.

  • Nice demo.

  • @electrickithara Thank you.

  • @PBANDSNOW The 'Dimarzio PAF' is the original PAF-type pickup that was made by Dimarzio back in the 80s.The 'PAF 36th Anniversary' is their updated model that's based on the same pickup/design and is made today.

  • @PBANDSNOW Paf pro

  • @lilchile123 It's actually not a PAF Pro. The PAF that I have in this clip is a vintage model that was made before the PAF Pro or the PAF 36th Anniversary. It most closely resembles the PAF 36th Anniversary. I have other clips with PAF Pros.

  • @wipers86 No problemo.

  • can i install a PAF joe and super distortion on any les paul(probably les pauls from japan) with a metal cover on it?

  • @royalguard08 yes. you can actually order the pickup already covered.

  • @royalguard08 Yes you can.

  • can i install a dimarzio PAF joe and super distortion with a metal cover on it(probably gold)?

  • @royalguard08 If you order it like that, yes.

  • Another question....which input did you use..the line in or guitar or...I seem to get crackling when I use the line in direct from my amp...

  • @stevoe1000 I've never DI connected to an amp with the BR600. I always use a mic (almost always an SM57) into the mic2 input that's on the back. In reference to your post on my Bugera video, this video (PAF and SD) doesn't have the crackling.

  • Hey again....did you convert this to mp3 and a wav file...this sounds too good...

  • @stevoe1000 The BR-600 exports in .wav format, so yes it is a .wav file.

  • This recording sounds really nice and clean...did you need any compression to keep the levels even while recording...just a really good clean recording..where was the mic placed and were you in the mic input or guitar one on the br600....thanks this is nice, and were you recording settings on the highest setting...any other editing outside the br...

  • @stevoe1000 Thanks man. There's only a very small amount of compression added by the BR-600. The mic was placed at the edge of the speaker's dust cap. I was in the mic input on the BR-600 running the a Shure SM57. I'm not sure what you mean by 'were you recording on the highest setting'. There was no outside editing done.

  • what colours do the super distortion come in? thanks just thinking of puttin them on my ibanez rg350m

  • @ironmaidenfan007666 Dude they come in so many colors I couldn't list them all lol. If you go the Dimarzio website they list them.

  • Hey man, i was just wandering, do you think the dimarzio super distortion pickup would sound good for me playing system of a down songs, like deer dance....bounce etc...if you havent head them look em up ^^, anyway yeh im getting abit tired of my Ibanez s470 NFS pickups because they sound crap :(

  • @TheGuitardude111 Absolutely. It would help you get that clear high-gain tone.

  • @jakeusurungus thanks :) how much are they anyway :)

  • @TheGuitardude111 Around 70 bucks.

  • does tge floyd stays in tune? or i have to buy a original floyd?

  • @jack91xxxx It stays in tune perfectly.

  • Hi, I want to order some DiMarzio DP223BC PAF 36th Anniversary's for my Epiphone Les Paul Standard but could you tell me if you think these will work with my guitar as I am not sure at all. This would much be appreciated.

    SlashWorshipper1993

  • @SlashWorshipper1993 Definitely. They sound great and will work perfectly.

  • @jakeusurungus Ah Awesome, Thanks alot for the help. :)

  • @SlashWorshipper1993 No problemo.

  • This sounds great, I am glad that I ordered the SD, it will be here in a couple of days, I am extremely excited. Great sound, and great playing as well!

  • @NextGreatGuitarist Thanks man! Let me know how you like it once you get it!

  • @jakeusurungus It sounds almost the same as the one previously in the guitar, though it has a lot better sound as far as bass, mid, and treble. It also sounds much better than the previous when using my distortion pedal. I quite like it.

  • @NextGreatGuitarist Very cool man. Glad that you like it!

  • @NextGreatGuitarist

same here! mine just came today so i gotta install it but im excited!

  • during the distorted part of this video were you using the tube screamer at all or was it just the distortion from the dsl?

  • @ande047 All DSL for the entire video.

  • GREAT SOUND!!!! Are your pickups DP103 and DP100?

  • @sesiaxis Yes. They're the original PAF and Super Distortion.

  • @jakeusurungus OK, but the PAF pickups name? It's called DP103?

  • @sesiaxis Yes, it is.

  • Sounds realllllly thin bro

  • @MtSpo23 Could be your speakers.

  • im not sure why alot of ppl are dissin on the tone...in all honesty it does sound like a very good rep of the jcm2000 (close mic'd im assumin anyhow hope u enjoy the pups ! love my super distortion - FS-1 - PAF Joe combo in my ibanez s prestige

  • @Dreamscapevirus Yeah, it's close mic'd with a sm57. I love it man, especially with that mahogany (a-la Ibanez s!).

  • The tubescreamer sounds bad to me...

  • @bfv102290 It's not on lol. Check out the description.

  • @jakeusurungus Well, whatever overdrive or distortion you used sounded bad to my ears. Is your amp a JCM 800?

  • @bfv102290 There's none on, it's just the amp. It's a JCM2000 DSL100.

  • does the super distortion have a 2 or a 4 conductor cable?

    Great sound quality btw.

  • @progAGguitar Thanks man. It's a 4 conductor.

  • If you listen carefully you can hear the mic screaming, lol. Kinda sounds like they screaming, "Help meee"

  • @PrsFenderJackson1980 I'd be screaming for help too if I was a defenseless mic being blasted with an onslaught of Marshall and Dimarzio lol.

  • Thanks man! I already installed it in bridge...by myself:)

And from mine side it is better than old PU..in nuances..But hey i am glad it works!

  • @MrShwaler Very cool man. Glad that you like it!

  • I just wanted to know, when you put Super Distort. in bridge. How you know you put magnet in right position. Those cables from magnet...They are shorter from hole or they are far from hole (that goes towards POTS). I hope i was clear about this. I just wanted to be sure if i Do not put magnet wrong...so part of magnet that is ment to work for thin strings, do not work for FAT strings..

  • @MrShwaler It actually doesn't matter. The Super Distortion is one of the Dimarzios that makes no difference which way the magnets face once installed.

  • Great demo and great sound. Thanks for posting. Also, damn! you have a really nice equipment.

  • Thanks man, I appreciate it.

    Haha, thanks again.

  • @jakeusurungus Hi. I don't know how to give comments in this new YT. Who let the dogs out?? I've got the same pup (dp100). When did you buy these pups??

  • @StagemasterHSH Yeah man, the new YT is kindof confusing lol. Believe it or not I inherited them with the Les Paul that they're in from my dad.

  • i think this guitar already comes with great pickups, and the distortions suck really for my taste. nice playing also

  • To each his own.

    Thanks man.

  • Man Can you tell me what is right polarity of super distortion ( in bridge) I plain to swap pu from mine guitar.

  • @MrShwaler Right polarity? I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you're asking me exactly.

  • which PAF pickup is that?

  • The original Dimarzio PAF that was made when they first started making them. It's most similar to the PAF 36th Anniversary (neck) model.

  • do you put the Boss NS-2 in effect loop?

  • No, it's on the floor with the rest of my pedals.

  • @jakeusurungus

does it work well? cut the noise coming from amp?

  • Absolutely. It does a really good job of cutting noise from gain as well as crazy lighting and shitty wall plugs.

  • on the br 600 did you put any mic effects on or just run it straight in?

  • Only a little compression to keep it from clipping.

  • you should put 12ax7's in the dsl. sounds awesome

  • What's the difference versus ECC83s?

  • the distortion comes out a lot tighter and takes all of the "fuzz" sound so you get essentially an acdc/metallica sound

  • Hmm... interesting.

  • would you recommend a air norton or paf pro in a ibanez rg1570 basswood?

  • It depends on the kind of sound that you're going for. A PAF Pro may be too treble-heavy for some people in a basswood bodied guitar. The Air Norton would still keep the openness but be a little warmer.

  • @jakeusurungus would u recommend an Air Norton & Super Distortion on an

    RG350DX?

  • Absolutely. I would recommend an Air Norton and a Super Distortion to anyone for any guitar as long as they wanted a warm sound ;)

  • or those creme colored?

  • Yes they are.

  • jesus dude, if you have an amp as nice as that marshall don't screw it up by using all those pedals.

  • It's funny that you should say that... I'm really not an effects guy; only the Phase 90 actually messes with the sound. All of the others just make it better ;)

  • Oh...goodie. Another Jake vid. rofl. kidding. The Dimarzio super distortion is probably has the most range out of any high high output humbucker out there. Personally I would put my first big buy into a top of the line tube amp head & cab, maybe a decent bridge pickup and strings. Other than that..........

  • Haha, what can I say?

It's definitely one of the best.

    Haha, totally agreed.

  • @jakeusurungus You should try PAF Joe next. Keeping Super Distortion of course.

  • Yeah, I do really want to try one, I just haven't got the time or the money yet haha.

  • Love the video.

I was incidentally thinking of getting the PAF 36th and a Super Distortion for my next guitar and found your video that gave a great idea of what they would sound like together.

Torn between a Stratocaster and Les Paul body though. :(

  • Thanks man, much appreciated!

    it's a great combination, that's for sure.

Get a mahogany bodied strat haha.

  • how would you compare your tone with a tube screamer to without one?

    is there a big difference?

    im thinking of getting one.

    i have a 50 watt marshall

  • It depends. You can definitely tell when it's on if you know what you're listening for. It adds a really great but subtle raunchyness and grit that's amazing for lead tones. I prefer rhythms without it because the sound is cleaner, but for leads I have never used anythying that sounds better.

  • thanks man.

  • No problemo.

  • lol got same amp and guitar as me XD

  • Haha, word.

  • Lol. I know this sounds funny. But i want to get the Super Dist. Is it good for Metallica/Nirvana? Please answer back.

  • I know that Cobaine used a Super Distortion so it should nail those tones. It'll give you a great Metallica sound if you scoop the mids on your amp like Kirk used to.

  • what model is that paf? like dp-103 or what? cause i looked on gc and theres like ten different ones xD

  • They actually don't make this model any more, it's the precursor to the new 36th Anniversary Neck model (DP103). They may have called it a DP103 before they updated it, I'm not sure though.

PS - Haha, I know what you mean. That shit can be confusing!

  • PAF Joe is Joe Satriani's, n then theres like the bluesbucker, humbucker from hell and all sorts of PAF style/vintage output alnico magnet pickups

  • nice sound I'm looking at getting something along those lines but not sure how it will go in my guitar lol

I was thinking of that combo as well haha

what settings is your distortion tone and clean tone on amp wise?

also if you have time can you do a recording using the equalizer

and wah since I have those and I see you do as well and I would like to see what it sounds like using them thanx

  • Why wouldn't it go into your guitar?

I'll definitely have some clips with the wah up soon (it's a Crybaby Classic).

I don't know if I'll have a recording with the EQ, but I'll try.

  • I meant sound wise and amp wise and all that coz I would probly get a different type of sound but oh well it sounds good might as well try it

awesome mines the zakk wylde signature but it will give me an idea of what it will sound like

    awesome thanx :D

I have a marshall dsl 401 so I might also get a bit of a different sound but I just wanna make sure before I buy the pick ups to see if they are what I really want

  • Your sound wouldn't be exactly the same depending on the guitar and because you're playing on an amp with less wattage but it would be relatively close.

Sadly, the only way to truly find out if a pickup suits your needs is to try it out.

  • yeah my guitars a bc rich metal master warlock

yeah thats true I was using the your vid as a guide to see what it would sound like and I liked it oh well I guess I'll find out

  • I really like that sound... I'm planning on Bakering (A term I coined, when you switch your bridge p'up to a Super Distortion in your Les Paul, named after Bad Religion guitarist, Brian Baker) my Epiphone Les Paul.

  • Haha, I like it!

Very cool; it's a great sound.

  • wow it sounds really nice!! i'm falling in love with jackson agian! i'ma get mine today!

  • Haha, word!

  • My grammar sucks today.

  • Haha, forgiven.

  • Just ask anyone with an actual 1959 Les Paul or 1963 Stratocaster. Now there p'ups and ways to get close, but thats it. Have real expectations.

  • Now there are p'ups that can get close, but thats it. Have real expectations.

  • One more rant. Now replacement PAF style pickup is going to sound dead on. Otherwise they would have to spend alot of extra green for breaking some copyright law. Want awesome PAF sound...buy...GIBSON. Want a different take on the PAF tone...you ready for it. Try out Seymour Duncan and or Dimarzio. Oh and "Vintage" pickups only apply to p'ups that have been around 60's, 70's, maybe even 80's. Anything that came out 10 years ago, but says Vintage....is going to have processed sound.

  • Exactamundo.

  • lol. There are just....nutty individuals out there. Trying to immalute Emgs. So they put X2N(bridge) and Tone Zone(Neck). Too much, I personally believe. Others think Paf DP103 is too loud and too much growl for a PAF sound. Unreasonable.....not doing their homework....just plain nuts are these people. Bottom line is that Super Distortion and PAF DP103 in any guitar will sound very good to awesome....depending on you and your amp quality.

  • Haha, absolutely.

    I completely agree.

  • super distortion works better on bridge or neck? or it doesn't mater?

  • It's designed to be a bridge pickup but some people do like it in the neck.

I personally prefer it in the bridge.

  • thx, i am new to the pick ups thing and my uncle gave me a super distortion pick up and an evolution for the bridge so i don't really know what to do xD

  • Haha, that's a interesting combo.

I wouldn't put either one of those in the neck, but that's just me.

The Evolution is brighter and has a more screaming tone while the Super Distortion is very warm and thick sounding.

What kind of guitar are you planning on putting one or both of them in?

  • well i was thinking about putting both of them in a cruzer by crafter guitar

  • Put the evo in the neck

  • i would if the pick wasn't marked for bridge

  • How is the Super distortion for Death metal and metal stuff?

  • I love it for any type of metal.

It's got a very heavy sound.

If you like really thick, chunky, but not muddy tone it's the way to go.

  • Very cool.

  • which PAF model do you have?

  • It's a 70's model. It was made before Dimarzio had different PAF models. It is most similar to the PAF 36th neck pickup.

  • What other processing have you done to your audio track? and What was the mic positioning?

    Thx!

  • The only processing I did was add a very small amount of compression. It's just enough to help balance out the sound.

The mic was positioned toward the edge of the speaker cone. If you look at the picture of my amp that accompanies the sound you can see exactly where I placed the mic.

  • Thx very much :) I've tried the SM57 with my rectifier and it gave me terrible results, I'm gonna use 421

  • A lot of Mesas are tricky because they're so bass-heavy and thick sounding. You have to try moving the mic from the center of the cone out to find a really good spot for them.

  • man, that super distortion sounds really awesome. Do you recommend it? Thinking about buying one for my strat. Its a Single Coil Sized Humbucker, right?

  • I definitely recommend it. It's easily one of my favorite pickups made.

The original Super Distortion is a humbucker (DP100), but they make a single coil sized one also (DP218).

  • Do you know if the single coil sized ones sound the same / as good?

  • I know that it sounds similar, but I've never played a guitar with the single-coil version in it. I think it would be totally worth finding out, haha. I guarantee you that it will sound good. Let me know if you put one in and tell me how it sounds.

  • I love the clean channel. I have the same amp. Mine is a little harsh sounding though, So I am thinking of getting a screamer to make it a little warmer. I used to have one, but I messed and got sacammed out of it for the really bright sounding ZW MXR. Bad decision on my part. Cool video. Sounds very strat like, but maybe a little less highs would be good. I have my presence off, and the treble on about four.

  • I think that the ZW MXR sounds really good, but you have to have the right kind of setup to match. I use a Tube Screamer though, haha. I like that more crunchy sound, I think that it adds character.

  • I really miss my tube screamer, I used it with my JTM 60 combo, and now that I have the JCM 2000, I need it. So maybe next payday from go-mart I will be able to get one. and maybe one day I will have a Mesa!!!!!!!!!!!!! HAHA

    One day.

  • I'd stick with Marshall, but that's just me.

    Good luck with your quest!
