  • You shoud have practiced first before putting us through all this !

  • @NewYearAustralia2009 That would be forgoing the entire point! The purpose of this video was to show a nostalgic look at what you'd have to go through back in the day with a PCjr

  • Larry 386

  • IBM PCjr really isn't a computer because it can't even hold it's own operating system when you turn it off. It has no hard drive. You have to load dos into memory every time. It was a POS machine. IBM PC XT was the one but it cost a lot more than the jr.

  • @joi1900 If that was the case, then the Commodore 64, Atari 400 and 800, Sinclair Spectrum, Apple 2, VIC-20, Amiga 1000,Amiga 500, and Atari ST wouldn't be real machines eitherXD

In fact, that would make no sense. The PCJr is in fact a real Computer because it takes different OS's and you got a keyboard and you can do productivity on it. Not to mention you can add a Hard Drive to most machines or a set of 2 to 3 floppy disc drives and a tape drive for measure.

    Real Computer=YES!!

  • @phreakindee but what about in all the pictures in ur review on this. Well, I have no serial mice. 1 USB mouse and 2 PS/2 mice. Would they work?

  • @MrMinecrafterEXTreme Yes, that's the PCjr Booster sidecar. It came with a bus mouse.

  • now if every game was this hard to load today , there wouldn't be any computer age

  • btw, where do u get a PCjr mouse?

  • @MrMinecrafterEXTreme You'd likely have to use an addon sidecar to plug in a third-party serial or parallel mouse. Mice weren't really used in PCs at this time.

  • For some reason I like the sound of the disk drive reading the floppy. Sounds like it's fricken broken!

  • what's with the 3D whenever I go 2 fullscreen?

  • Man, drowning in your own pisswater, what a way to go!

  • Hey phreakindee, have you played the LSL game on PS2? It's pretty raunchy. lol

  • your cool and funny,,, cool vid!!

  • by the end of this did you think "yey ive wasted nearly an hour of my life" xD

  • "eat woman"

    "That comes later."

    LOL XD

  • c:/dir

  • @Grillledfox I got mine on eBay, also have had good luck with Amazon too.

  • Memories

  • The "I ran out of drinks.." part had me laughing hard.

  • this all seems very awful

  • You win this game by *spoiler* finally having sex with a woman who is not only willing but who won't give you an std. She basically trades sex for an apple. No lie. Sex for an apple.

I can't believe my parents not only let me play this game, but were the ones who provided both the ancient computer and the disk itself so that I could.

  • @Ant1Live I think it's part of the joke. Her name is Eve and you give her an apple. Althought, I don't get the STD part but having Played LSL 2 it sort of makes sense.

  • @ThinkTink606432 Of course, the type of fruit that Eve ate in the Bible was never specified... :p

As for the STD, that would be from the prostitute that is in the secret room in the bar.

  • @Ant1Live Ah, now it makes even more sense. :)

  • Did you use the cracked or the original version when you finally got Larry working on that computer? Also, in Police Quest when you type "drop pants" the game gives you a snarky game over screen, might work in other Sierra titles aswell.

  • @cyde79 I used the original at the end, where I mention the problem was due to the PCjr memory management program.

  • The disk swapping days I'll never miss. Once I got my first hard drive, there's no going back!

  • This finally shows man's dominance over hideously uncooperative machine. It's sort of a climactic moment to get the game to boot, finally!

  • wtf a wireless kb for a 80yr old pc

  • @king65462 30 year old PC, dumbass.

  • Did you notice that "Lefty's" bar at the beginning of the game looks exactly like the outside of "Moe's Tavern" from The Simpson?

I remember these days of endless disk swapping - hoping, praying, cursing - re-disk-swapping and then be amazed at what is now really a craptastic game!

  • Can't belive I missed this video! Awesome game, love the music and it's relly funny seeing other gamers getting frustrated.. I can relate, oh god how I can relate xD

  • I think you're expecting a little much from a computer of this vintage. What you're seeing is the norm.

Also, the music for the drunk guy is "How Dry I Am."

  • Sigh. Brings back such memories. I used to have all the cases and such of my games. I'm more a minimalist now though.

  • this game kinda reminds me of jj&jeff for the turbo graphics

  • Wireless keyboard!!!! Keyboard from the future!! ;D

  • Gotta love copy protection. I remember stripping it from the floppy manually and the shit would boot right up. DRM (new term for copy protection) is trash, worthless, and inefficient when it does work. If I cant buy a copy, crack it and play it without problems, then I don't buy it at all.

  • 15 minutes for 600Kb !!! ahahaha

  • Samuel J. Palmisano did not like this video.

  • LOL Love the quest achievement of the brilliant PCjr's excellent sound once you got it working after all that.

Good stuff love this video. Had many feelings like this myself on other types of systems.

  • WHOA! i remember that noise when the pc reads the disc...but not the fan noise...

  • Well done man!

  • helly yeah it is about time buddy i know how you fell when i am working on some thing like that buddy

  • hahahaha...reminds me of the good old DOS-days: first comes the pain, then he game. But you were soo happy at the end, when the game loaded...

  • Buzz, buzz, buzz...

    Loading...

    Buzz, buzz, buzz...

    Loading...

    Buzz, buzz, buzz...

    Loading...

Ah, those were the days. ;-)

  • Thanks for doing what ever you did to clear the screen in the update!

  • this brings back so many memories from back in the day! would love to play this game again for the nostalgia :)

  • 128K of RAM. Wow!

  • I love the sound of the old 5in floppies. It sounds like history.

  • what a xbox 360 controller doing there?

  • Half the fun was getting the game to work. It's like getting the game to work WAS the game.

  • I used to play this when I was a kid. Now I'm a sex offender.

  • The PCjr was a pretty bad computer. It's cartridge slots were barely ever utilised, it had no DMA, the upgrade sidecars were bulky and large and added width to the unit, the wireless keyboard had low battery life and poor range, and with a 14" monitor, how far away could you want to be from it? Also the original chiclet keyboard was poorly designed and difficult to type on. But the PCjr did have several great features like its high res graphics modes, and its 3-voice sound chip.

  • lol, cracked version xD

  • haha awesome! You realise now you have to do a review on sierra's other great classics, being Police Quest I and Space Quest I :)

    Cheers

  • this was the shit back in the day sometimes getting the game to work was harder than playing the game it self

    with autoexec.bat files

    config.sys

    qemm

    and memory manager

    and anyone else remember ramdrives

  • 30 Minuites to install a legendary game (That Serria locked Larry in their basement and is leaving him to die until they decide to make more Larry from Al's site.). Just remember to pay the taxi driver with money, not wine.

  • Have u ever beaten lsl?

  • @npk6898 Being that this is Larry we're talking about, I assume you mean "beaten" as in beaten the game, not... something else ;) Yes, I have, not too long ago actually. It's fantastic.

  • @sweetpeahiker Well that's actually what this entire video was about, because the only way the PCjr works at all is through a boot disk since there is no hard drive. Even then this turned out to be a special case because of the Jr's unique hardware config with the memory upgrade and its associated program, so I would say this was anything but straightforward, even back in the day.

  • @phreakindee 9 times out of 10 that would be the advice to the customer and it sometimes actually worked ;-)...for both SOL and TSN/INN.

  • @sweetpeahiker Hehe, well I can't argue with that. Can't tell you how many times I was on the phone or a BBS searching for solutions to these games, and making dozens of boot disks... which is why this situation got so annoying (and fun!) because it was a very different process than the ol' routine.

  • @phreakindee Were you on TSN/INN?

  • @sweetpeahiker I vaguely remember trying it out, yes. I still have the install floppies for TSN. Have you seen the revival project for INN? It's pretty interesting stuff, hoping it takes off a bit more as I'd love to give it a try again.

  • It was straight forward for back then.

P.S. If you ever have a problem trying to run a Sierra game...create a 'boot disk' ;-)

  • Where do you get all these Rare Pc ? (rare yes , remember we are in 2010 now ...)

Yard Sale ? Family Shop ? Internet Selling site ?

are you in the USA or in Canada ?

  • @hitachi088 I usually say in each review of the system, as it varies quite a lot. I got this PCjr from a fellow collector on the Vintage Computer Forums, but I also get them from eBay, Craigslist and sometimes local thrift stores. I'm in the USA, in North Carolina.

  • @phreakindee

    Ohh ,

i was asking where you are because i got a Texas instruments 99-A4 with the floppy+some cart ,adapter and power ...

but i life in Canada ...

  • Thank you for this! The Jr was my first computer back in '86. I actually got mine up to 384 KB of RAM, and please don't ask what it cost. I bought it to run a baseball simulation game that came on two diskettes, and it got to where I could tell how the play would turn out by listening to the disk activity. Gotta admit that I never tried anything as advanced as LSL. I'm jealous that you seem to still have access to a Jr. I traded mine in for a 286 a LONG time ago. ;-)

  • @rherbert57 You're quite welcome! Glad to bring up some memories to a previous owner. It's a pretty nice little machine, considering its limitations. 384k! That's living the high life for a Jr back in the day.

  • I feel with you. I spend quite a time on sunday to get "Star Fleet I - The War Begins" running on my Commodore 64, some month ago I did the same for "Steel Thunder". Testing a lot of different images, cracks and floppys... all had to be transfered on a real 5.25" ... Sometimes I seriously ask myself "WHY THE FUCK AM I DOING THIS ?" - but the pay off is worth it.

  • That game is worth the aggravation!

  • hahahaha...this video is great! Holy crap, I remember the days of trying to get stuff to work with very little resources on my old IBM PC XT... And disk swapping was the worst...

You made this a very humorous experience... I guess, in a way, that means I'm enjoying your pain.

P.S. Put some pants on, will ya? :-D

  • @hotchalupa Haha, glad you enjoyed my agony.

Come on, it's Leisure Suit Larry! You always gotta play LSL without pants... right??

  • Hah, the sounds that thing makes brings back memories of all kinds.

  • @malignantpoodle Glad to bring the nostalgia through audible bliss!

  • AAAAAAH !, YES !, LEISURE SUIT LARRY !!!, AH !!!, its about freaking time.

  • Yes. PCjr has wireless keyboard but you can still buy a keyboard cord for the PCjr. You won't need to buy batteries again. Keyboard cord PCjr didn't come with PCjr.

  • This is a fantastic video. I had to close the door to my office because I was laughing so hard at some of your comments.

I had a genuine moment of nostalgia upon hearing the drives running and seeing the unboxing of larry, I seem to remember many Sierra games had that beige inside box with the Sierra mountain photograph.

I remember fondly the utter joy at getting a game to work after hours of (admittedly my father's) work. Boot discs for specific games were always a favorite.

  • Maaaaaaaaan the floppy disk reading sound! I didn't hear that over 15 years! This.... is.... awsome!

  • Holy shit, what a great big miss. Why can't you just run the game from the original disk without first backing it up? Wow, all that effort just to load a game, I can't appreciate DOS as it's been years since i last used it, i wouldn't know where to start if ylu sat me down in front of a DOS machine without a reference manual to hand. I don't think I want to use a PF Junior anytime soon, I'd rather use one of the later Tandy 1000's.

  • I remember this times!

    Excelent video.

  • Good video, but hey, it wasn't so difficult to run it from the floppy!

You kids have grown so complacent with Windows :P

  • Are you sitting on the floor in you underwear? Lol.

Cool vid though. Larry has unfortunately lost all of its cool style in the newer games.

  • @hoques1432 Hehe, yeah boxer shorts. Found it somewhat appropriate considering the game (perhaps briefs would be more appropriate, Larry Laffer-style)

  • One of the best games I played back in the day. I liked most of the games that Sierra put out. Space Quest was a fun series as well.

  • well, my friend... hope that IDE-jr will be released soon, and all your problems will be solved!

    ...that sounded ridiculously cheesy.

  • wtf? wireless keyboards were around in the 80's! Who'd a thunk it?!

  • @bean420man Well, the wireless works off the same principle as a TV remote, so it wasn't hard to do.

  • lol this is so funny

  • Cool video, I've never really looked into the PCjr and in a way I'm glad :)

I look forward to your video on this system, seems like it could be an interesting little machine.

  • Ahh, the good old days. :p I love the larry games!

  • Wireless keyboard?

  • Tandy 1000 owners laugh at your pain. :-P

p.s. Maybe the yt:quality=high tag has something to do with the widescreen video display? The aspect ratio is correct, though, so it's still fine to watch.

  • @vwestlife Hehe, I'll be laughing at myself soon as I've got a 1000 RL/HD on the way!

And I added that tag after the fact, to see if it made any difference. It didn't. It just bothers me that the top and bottom of the screen is cropped off! I tried with a 16:9 tag and it puts black bars at the top and bottom, effectively shrinking the vid about 20%. Oh well.

  • @phreakindee Can you please do a review talking about your Tandy 1000 machines? I haven't seen one on your channel, maybe I just haven't looked, so if there isn't a review on your channel I'd love to see one, thanks. I've never used a Tandy 1000 before, but I'm very interested indeed in those machines.

  • @Lachlant1984 Yes, there will be a Tandy 1000 series review in the next coming month or so - check back!

  • computers have come a long way, although they are still a pain!

  • Sounds like you badly need a full 640K and one of those full add-ons that added a Floppy drive, Hard drive, and make the system 2x as high.

  • @Dant2142 Yes, I do. Badly. I haven't yet been able to find one, but that would make this a much more usable machine. Well, as usable as it can get... it's still a hassle finding PCjr-mode games that actually work, since so many were made for Tandy machines.

  • @phreakindee Don't you have a Tandy 1000? If absolutely necessary run it on that.

Also be careful using that PCjr, due to the complete lack of NMI (Non-maskable Interupt) Typing while transferring data (floppy to ram, modem to ram, modem to floppy being the worst) will cause you to lose the data that is being transfered.

  • @Dant2142 I do, which is why I'm not giving the addon a priority. Still, it would be nice to have.

And yeah, I read about the issues with the interrupt. Crazy stuff

  • @Dant2142 I think it's usually called "DMA", at least in this case. I could mix up something though.

  • @UKRetroGames It was painful... so goes life with MS-DOS variations and strange PCjr memory issues and custom game loaders. Larry is very much worth it

  • Looks fun =D Just awequad on that system!!! Lol

  • hey, how do you record your videos? i mean you have this old-school video quality, what camera do you use? thnals!

  • @JurisL85 I use an old VHS-C camcorder I got for a few bucks, a JVC GR-AXM225, and an EasyCap USB video capture device to capture from the camcorder's composite output. It gives that vintage look for sure, but it's a pain to capture from!

  • What a piece of junk! Calling it the PCjr? That's like calling it PCcrap.

You have a lot of patience tho!

  • First Larry is definitely my favourite of the LSL series. I had the original VGA remake back in the day, it was also awesome.

  • Oh, by the way: You need to get a parallel port expansion - that will let you add all kind of stuff, extra drives, HDs, and even ethernet adapters.

  • wow, you got it WITH the monitor. AWESOME.

  • " I hope it loads" I ran out of drinks lol

  • LOL wow man that was a process! That's cool you got it working. I haven't played this game in YEARS!

  • Why did they call them selves Sierra Online? I didn't even think the net was really around back then.

Anyway, a very interesting video. I always find this old tech fascinating.

Wait, how did you even get the downloaded version on those huge floppies?

  • @Disthron I know their original name was On-Line Systems but I don't remember why the name "on-line" was used.

And I actually have a 5.25" floppy drive in my Windows 7 machine and several old machine networked to it as well, haha.

  • @phreakindee Wow, that's awesome. I tip my hat off to you.

  • nothing like the old days

  • i had to laugh out loud at 4:48

    xD

    awesome episode dude, as ever!

    2 thumbs up =D

  • Those loading times must be a pain.

  • Ah, the joys of MS-DOS!

  • I myself am not a fan of Leisure Suit Larry, but if I was, I would be gravely offended by how horrid the latest instalment of the series that came out last year turned out. But since I'm not, well, I guess I don't care.

  • Congrats on getting that PCjr! That three voice sound is schweet! Also the joys of MS-DOS, memory managers, chiclet keyboards, loading times...

I remember playing Larry back in my younger days, it was the computer equivalent of having a porn magazine that you'd show off to your friends while keeping it hidden from your parents.

  • Haha reading instruction manuals FTW!

Ahh the good old days of PC gaming ;D I think my toaster has more RAM than this pc does haha

But man, Ive had some fun with old PCs. Nothing like bleeps and bloops and pixels to get the nostalgia flowing :D

  • man i loved this game....i used to play this back in the day when no one was watching what i was doing lol

  • What a classic game. Kind of a pain getting it to work on that PCjr. I've never seen a PCjr before obviously it was a cheap IBM PC at the time? I mean no HD but it has a wireless keyboard? Really? lol anyway I was soooo excited to get this game in grade school and I had it all built up in my mind like it was going to be super realistic graphics. My buddy made me a copy and then I finally played it and thought the graphics sucked. Keep in mind this was 1993 for me but the game was great.

  • @MN12BIRD It was a cheaper, home-oriented PC. It's just a bizarre creature - wireless IR keyboard (originally rubber-keyed), no HD, single floppy, enhanced graphics and sound, 2 cartridge slots, almost all proprietary inputs and outputs, not a ton of stuff made for it. Should be a fun review once I get to it.

  • I did use an IBM PC jr, didn't look that this one actually. And I do own this game too, at least I know I still have the collection package copy still intact.

  • wow my very first pc in 1986 great times!

  • The question is....

    Was it worth it???

  • @pocketmego of course it was worth it!

  • that loading would drive me insane!
