And oh yeah, I agree that Sinatra's voice became gradually less pretty as he aged, but smehow this version has a more raw, powerfull sound than the 51 version. I prefer this one.
Maybe kind of a weird thing to say.. But this would be an epic funeral song... But you should have been an epic guy to pull this off..
his phrasing, delivery reflect his love and respect for Opera. Even aspects of the arrangement relfect an aria. his favorite opera composer was Puccini
This was recorded in one take in the 30th Street studio, on March 27. Sinatra is included as one of the lyricists because after studying the lyric sheet (as was his custom), as he performed it he subtly changed Jack Wolf's original lyrics, making the song truly autobiographical concerning his tempestuous relationship with Ava Gardner. Legend has it, after his one take, he fled the studio, unable to continue. I think it's one of his finest recordings. Stunning artistry.

@kiskipuich1 There's a 2010 book on Sinatra by James Kaplan, "Frank - The Voice" which looks at his life from before WW II and a few years past his comeback which began with the film "From Here To Eternity". A terrific read and I just checked Amazon= about $20 (list $35).
Fabulous lyrics! Even the title is very intriguing and... very touching... if not to mention incomparable voice of Sinatra, his heartfelt singing, and melancholic melody... Immortal song, thanks so much Ford for sharing! ♫♪♥♫♪

This is the slowest Sinatra song that is not over sentimental and boring. I really love it. What a voice this man had. This made me cry a bit...

Yes a fool, but who wouldn't want someone lovely as Ava Gardner?

NOTHING OR NO NO ONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO BLOCK THE LISTENING BY ANYONE, WITH EVEN A PINCH OF HEARING, OF THIS SOUL STIRRING MASTERPIECE.

I hope that he and Ava are once again together. I think she haunted him to his grave. This is a magnificent and heart wrenching tribute to love lost.

@miagi732 I think I know of the one you speak of. It was Sinatras' finest version. I haven't heard it in years and yet I can tell in an instant.
rodrma 6 months ago
@miagi732 I found it! Google this:
sinatra 1951 i'm a fool to want you
and pick the one with Korean (?) writing and pictures of Ava Gardner in it at dailymotion
The best version ever. Hope you find it. (if you haven't already)

@miagi732 If I am not mistaken, the '51 version has been taken off u-tube by the copyrights owners :(
