All good accordian players have a good right hand (assuming they are right handed). But the genius accordian players, the ones that stand out from the pack, also have brilliant LEFT hands. Listen to the bass in the second tune, it's brilliant.
Tony, you are one class player. theres very few who can create that feeling of completeness, a lift, a certain something, an indefinable quality that can move an entire crowd. You got it.
It's derived from the D melodion (one row) where the notes are the same than on a harmonica in D. This accordion system uses a second row (external) that is tuned a half tone lower (C#) (exactly like a chromatic harmonica ant it's "pump" to lower the notes).
(except that AFAIK, the chromatic harmonica only exists in B/C)
Technically, the instrument played her by Tony is a little bit different. It is tuned a holf-tone upper, hence the rows are un D/D# (D# being internal) Note that D# being Eb (well not far ...), you can play with with video with a Eb tin whistle or a fretted instrument with capo on fret 1. For the fiddle, unless you are a virtuoso, you have to tune it up by a half-tone.
The tuning is C#/D that's why it sounds so good because the bass is easier to play on a C#/D than a B/C. You have more choices on which way to move the bellows to suit the bass buttons.
That box is worth a lot of money unbelievable playing as well I have the new replica of that box the golden jubilee but it just doesent have the Gist for $3,300.00 a joke in other words
So you don't rate the new Grey Golden Jubilees? Sean Garvey swears by them. Damn if you paid $3,300.00 you'd expect a shit hot box. What's so different about them is it the sound of the reeds?
I did not mean a disaster, it is good, but not that good, the key board is the same as the Saltarelle , the gold metal is easly scratched , is wearing off already, and is defenetly to thin , this model is all wood and a lot of imperfections in the carpentry, But it is loud, and I am told it will get better, with age ,once it is broke in fully. And it is, over priced. My wife bought it for me past Christmas, so i cant bitch to much , What are you playing yourself
Try learning the tunes by ear if you can. If not, search for "the session" and then search their database of tunes for Ships are Sailing and Toss the feathers. There are at least three different tunes by the name of Toss the Feathers, so you'll have to sift through them. Good luck!
While looking for a version of "Ships Are Sailing" I stumbled upon this. I had never heard of him,but now I want to listen to anything by him and take up the accordian!!! What kind of button box is that?
His name's Tony MacMahon from county Clare. The two tunes he's playing(Extremely well) are Ships are sailing and Toss the feathers. The "Box" he's using is a grey Paolo Soprani tuned i think in C/D could be wrong no doubt i'll get righted.

The man has got two parallel processors. Here is music and here is a musician. Such a contrast with modern pop trash.

Last reply was from a whistle collector. I am a button accordian collector, with six. Plenty here. Surprised you only know PA.

It's a very special kind of button accordion.
It's derived from the D melodion (one row) where the notes are the same than on a harmonica in D. This accordion system uses a second row (external) that is tuned a half tone lower (C#) (exactly like a chromatic harmonica ant it's "pump" to lower the notes).

The player is not the person who posted the video
The player is the Irish musician Tony McMahon now many many years older, in fact I think he is already drawing the Irish State Old Age Pension.

I'm in awe...This has been the most feeling I have ever seen in button accordion playing...A definite 5 star rating !
What tuning anyone is that: Irish B/C or C/G Diatonic button accordion ?
AccordionTony 4 years ago
The tuning is C#/D that's why it sounds so good because the bass is easier to play on a C#/D than a B/C. You have more choices on which way to move the bellows to suit the bass buttons.
