@Moemors Well, if you need assistance selling it, please let us know! The 670 (ADL's replica, or the original) remains the most sought after compressor ever created.
@jeeaaman Many modern recordings (the ones you are likely referring to) use synthesis, plug-ins, in-the-box-only mixing, and completely lack the acoustics of real natural space, great microphones, great preamps, and great legendary tube comrpessors such as this. Just because the tools are out there, doesn't mean that a lot of modern/pop things that make it to the radio happen to utilize them. Some do of course, but it's not always the case. Hope that makes some sense...
I'm a musician first and foremost, but I've worked in music retail. Lately I've seen huge price tags on vintage gear replicas. If you're a collector or investor, I can see spending some big money on an original that will never be made again or that represented a specific era, but people are confusing the value of buying a $20,000 relic and a $20,000 tool. There is no compressor on the planet that sounds $20,000 good.
@MakeItJungle You could not be any further from the truth, and there is no clearer indication that you have not used an ADL670, or had the opportunity to compare them to an original. Clearly a $20k compressor is not for everyone- but to achieve the sound of an original, it can't be done cheaply, it just can't. Minty Fairchilds for one are $35k. There is a reason that Anthony Demaria is with Aerosmith right now as I type with one of these- and they could afford an old one or a new one.
the real ones are overly priced! now we have a replica going for $20,000? I hope you only had it for a few days and returned it. If I were to build mine, I'd do it for under $5,000.
@experiment0003 I'd say go for it! But, the experiment might very well end badly... the problem here is the tireless way that replicating the transformers one-by-one took. There is another replica out, also $20k. We not only have kept ours, but it is a favorite among every engineer at Sound Pure, and one key reason that Sound Pure Studios is selected for projects- big investment, yes, but the way that the unit sounds justifies its admittedly extremely high price tag. Thanks for the comment!
@harrymerchant456 Hmmm, not sure that is the best use of what may be the finest compressor ever created. If you need help restoring and/or marketing your originals, we'd be glad to help.
@angie4josh It's actually a compressor. If you can't live without one, they cost what they cost, but no doubt they are the most expensive compressor on the planet.
@thearchiveable Sadly, no VST!! LOL! When you take the trouble to replicate these down to every last sonic color, tube, and transformer interaction, there is an exorbitant amount of time and money invested- perhaps this is why there are only a couple companies trying this, and the money for each of these competitive units is equivalent. There are emulators and plug-ins, but the real thing is quite unlike anything else that has come out since trying to do similar sounds at a lower price
@desol333 Confusing it with the 660 (single channel). The last two 670's that I have seen come up went for $16-17k each. That's pretty good given that they were used and that the tube suite along makes up the difference between that cost and the cost of the original
@desol333 It's tough to say with that sample as the impressive owrk of a Fairchild shines on subjects with even more harmonic information, but I think that yes, I will give it "good Vari-MU" but would not say it sounds like a Fairchild ( or identical clone). The calculated, and scientifically matched xfmrs, and optimized power supply created by Anthony, does things a little differently. You will find that there are less artifacts of comp, and more openness in Anthony's (as with the original)
@desol333 It isn't every about the money. It is always about the sound. That being said, I don't think that there are any guarantees, until you hear the unit about what it is going to sound like. The Original Fairchild has inspired dozens of "similar" compressor designs that are "close but no cigar" and until I hear one side by side ours (which has been side by side original refurbed mint Fairchilds) the jury will still ne out as far as I'm concerned.
@desol333 Well, they are actually going for $30-$35k for a clean one. Hence the brand new one with a warranty at $20k is pretty sweet. Trust me, we didn't WANT to blow $20k, but when we saw, used, and tested this one, we were sold!
@desol333 Got a lot of serious engineers and customers that will purchase or consider an ADL (the flagship replica) at $20k (and they retain their value well at that price), but wouldn't be interested in going anywhere near a PCB kit that will result in a Frankenstein box, with no resale value, and arguably more of a departure from the original... PCB-mount DIY for $5k in cost (yikes!), transformers may or may/not be close until compared in action against real ones... wouldn't be my money.
@desol333 Have you listened to them? Anthony has done some ridiculously extensive listening tests before arriving with his magic sauce of xfmrs. If you build gear, you should take a stab at this one, it is prob audio's most revered and challenging box of all- if it was easy to pull off there would be piles of them on the market at $3k, or 5k, but the only 2 guys making them (that I'm aware of) each sell them for $20k. Trust me there is a much bigger market at $5k if it was so easy to do!
@desol333 the cost that we are talking about isn't necessarily just raw parts, but extreme amounts of time and labor by very, very experienced tech- Anthony himself does these by hand. we know Anthony very, very well, and he ain't getting rich on these things. He's not even the only one building them, and the other company also gets near $20k for them... you'd really appreciate the point-to-point wiring, and detail on this thing, not just on the unit, but also on the power supply.
@desol333 LOL! It's more like $10-12k in parts, no joke. The transformers are ridiculously expensive to replicate, and are built one-at-a-time in extremely small numbers. The switches and knobs, metal-work, etc. 100% all custom. The tubes are rare and new-old-stock... you wouldn't believe this thing... and yes, it sounds absolutely unreal.
Well, believe it or not, that's what the replica goes for! And, perhaps even more difficult to believe is that it is worth it- best compressor I've every come in contact with, that's for sure...
haha, such geeks :D
