Here in Australia our highways are open to 130km/h and we tend to hit alot of roo's on the road. Imagine doing that speed, and hitting a big roo? Now that is going to do ALOT of damage. The point of a big bullbar is to be able to send that thing flying, while keeping you and your vehicle safe. Why do you think trucks use them too? Are they stupid as well for wanting protection?
