  • 6 and 12. 3 and 9 your wheel's. Best bang for the buck guy. look at your wheels as a clock, put your hands on the 12 o'clock and the 6. Shake. If there is any noise or play. Wheel bearing or ball joint's. Put them at 3 and 9 now. Shake. If it dose then Wheel bearing or tie rod ends or ball joint's. This is for the front wheel's. Also could be the control arm bushing's on some older focus's. :))). but many car's Have them go out. Drive smarter and dodge the pothole's.

  • why don't you just spin the tier the one that does not move as fast or it moves in and out

  • @runboy1520 uhhm no. lol

  • :( my supra has a limited slip diff

  • and now and days we make cars that the everyday can’t fix look at how much knowledge this guy has people like him need to have a job for a very long time.

  • i love this video !!!!

  • Great video!

  • I think u mean "SPECIFICALLY"

  • this video is bad..... IT IS PACIFICLY FOR FWD... great video since it doesnt have anything 2 do with my BMW

  • Much easier method. Lift wheel, put one hand on coil spring, using other hand, spin the wheel as fast as you can. If the wheel bearing is bad, you will feel the roughness in the spring.

  • i have a 98 sunfire which has a simular type of problem. when i let of the gas i hear a growling noise and also when i turn a corner it is kinda hard to steer but the steering wheel turns fine if the car is parked. do u think this could be caused by a bad wheel bearing or maybe the diff? im stumped on this one. btw the car is a 5 speed if that matters lol.

  • i got a tapping sound on the back of my car and it also goes with the speed of the car, what it might be_

  • You can also see which wheel bearing is bad by noticing if the noise gets louder when you make a left or right turn. If you are turning right, the left wheel bearing is probably bad. The reason for this is because more pressure is put on the left wheel while making a right hand turn.

  • i just lift the car on jack and spin the wheel by hand....you'll hear thar rrrrrrrrr noise, but in the same time you have to ignore the noise of the pads touching the rotor

You must have a fine hearing ...for me it worked...I found 3 bad bearing this way.

  • thanks for the vids man

  • No mention of Scotty Kilmer?

    He has some good videos.

  • It's amazing how bad a wheel bearing can make a car handle.. From the time I bought it my fiero felt like it had a mind of it's own. Turned out the main problem was a rear wheel bearing. It wasn't making noise, just wobbled. The hub nut wasn't OEM size so it's probably a cheap Chinese hub from a previous owner. I have many complaints with the hub I got from Timken (poor fit with car, included seal doesn't fit the hub, seal/ORing laying loose where hub could damage them) but problem is solved.

  • wont that screw up your differential?

  • @TeenIronMan

    No it won't.

    It's got an open diff.

If you had an LSD or for some reason your dif was locked, and somehow the traction the tire had was enough to stop the wheel contacting the pavement to not spin, and your engine didn't stall, yes you would either mess up the dif or transmission.

  • its easier and safer if you jack up the car and grab hold of the spring with one hand and turn the wheel with the other, if the bearing is bad you will feel it in the spring.

  • No, I found the problem it's a Volkswagen beetle

  • Nice tutorial.

  • too many stupid people could see this and try it and ruin their mommy and daddy's garage wall.

  • Found the problem, it's a Saturn. lol

  • i thought it was my serpentine belt.... got a new one... sound still there. so i suspect its my wheel bearing

  • you are idiot?

  • What about manual transmissions?

  • I take it this wont be possible to check the front wheels in my bmw as its a back wheel drive?

  • @biggurs Ask mi16t below and if you do, you'll drive off your jack since the video tells us to put the end up with the noise then put the car in drive and let the wheels turn. IN OTHER WORDS - No. But is it's a Saturn, according to mi16t, then you are OK.

    Seriously, no you can't.

  • EricTCG, thanks for you helpful videos (seriously) but you need to clarify that if the noise is coming from the non driven end, this procedure does not work.

  • But he lives far away, so i wanna bring one arm there, then take his car back here to replace the other, obviously i wanna find out which bearing is bad , so that I can replace that side for the drive ( about 350miles) ( the trailing arms are also heavy as hell, but atleast the bearings from the ones on my car are perfect)

  • Le help. My friend has a e36 bmw like the one in my vids, but different engine etc. One of the rear bearings is shot, how the hell do i determine which one? Car has lsd, and the last time i had it off the ground with both wheels spinning, i couldn't hear the noise, let alone determine which side. I am putting in m3 rear trailing arms so i can put in m3 brakes to match my fronts ( which are m3) and want to give him my old trailing arm with good bearings

  • May want to mention you are working on a FRONT WHEEL DRIVE CAR.

  • @Leoneidas lol, cuz saturns come in rwd, facepalm buddy!!!

  • @mi16t Dear Dumbass,

As you state, what if someone has a front wheel bearing noise, like this video, but has a RWD Saturn? Video says to follow these steps: Limited slip diff? no- check. Jack the front of the car? Check. Apply Parking brake?, check. Put in drive? Check. Accelerate slightly? WHOOPS off the jack it comes with appropriate chassis damage. Hence U R a dumbass. Have fun diagnosing your front wheel bearing noise on your RWD Saturn following this video's instructions.

  • @Leoneidas

THERE ARE NO REAR WHEEL DRIVE SATURNS. EVEN THE ALL WHEEL DRIVE MODELS ARE ONLY PART TIME ALL WHEEL DRIVE, AND WITH THE SYSTEM SWITCHED OFF, THEY ARE FRONT WHEEL DRIVE. ARE YOU SERIOUSLY RETARDED?

  • @mi16t

    Saturn Sky.

    I'll refrain from any insults.

  • @yorgle11

Yes, I missed that one, then again thats really a opel speedster rebadged

  • @Leoneidas

ALSO, RWD? JACK IT UP BY THE DIFF, BOTH WHEELS SAFELY OFF THE GROUND. MAN, YOU SHOULD WALK DUDE....SERIOUSLY

  • @mi16t OK look, perhaps I cam back a bit too strong. I appreciate a good trade of jabs. So I apologize for the dumbass lead-in. But think about what I am saying, OK maybe all Saturns are FWD. This video is not titled for just Saturns. Nor does it even say for FWD cars. Neither is my issue really.

  • @mi16t If someone sees this video and hears a noise coming from the end of the car that is not the driven end, they are going to raise the end that they heard the noise, apply the parking brake, put the car in D and promptly drive off the jack. Seriously, I've watched the vid three times. He should add this to his already pretty good video.

  • @mi16t ack, read from the bottom up.

  • Hmmm. Ferris Buellers Day Off ????

let the car roll at about 20 miles an hour (no gas) and turn left and right. The bearing will be the loudest when it is on the out side of the turn.(because it rotating faster)

Jack the car up and pull on the wheel, bearing will likely have a little wiggle if shot. (hynes manual recommendation)

and if the bearing is bad it will definitely be hotter than the other side after a 15 minute or so drive.

Never know when the technique might come in handy tho. Thanks

  • Lol This Intro Looks Like a WWE Wrestling Intro

  • they way i check wheel bearings is after i hear a noise ill put my hand on the hub and it should be very hot if the wheel bearing is rooted

  • Can you do the same thing, the same way with a manual transmission?

  • A mech wanted 800 or so doller to replace i think one side or both because the bearing had to be pressed out and what not. i thought it was a rip off cause you could just get a hub cheaper. Same exact car too except a manual

  • Hello, I have a question, what if the car is RWD, and you suspect the problem with the front wheel bearing, what should you do then?

I am not sure if this could work, but can I do the same thing, but a block behind of the rear wheels, and then jack the car from the front, put it on Neutral and spin the wheel myself to try to figure out which side the noise is coming from?

    Thanks,

  • @MaxVxM~ haha!.... ye sure.... if u can spin the wheel up to 40mph with your hand(s)!!

  • Car drove off the jack and through the wall

  • Sometimes a bad bearing and or hub can sound like cupped tires ( woop woop woop sound) when driving, this test is a good way to check against cupped tire noises

  • Eric , I would drive the car for 5 miles , pullover and feel the center of each wheel with your hand and the warmer one will be the failing bearing usually.

  • hy ERIC i have a honda integra 92 like your brother have and for one month a have some problem with idle air thing when i stop the car at a traffic light it is accelerating by it self (from 1000 to 2000) a checkt the thing and clean the trotile (was black)and i found a chip or a swich with some small house ruber pipe thath i thing is the problem vtec 1.6 automatic gear, and i have allso some problem -if i go 40km/h i leave gas up is making like it is chouking please replay Colllapss3@yahoo.com

  • Thanks for the video, at least i know this isn't the noise I am hearing...

  • when testing the diff, do you have it in park or drive while spinning the tire while the car is in the air?

  • what if it's awd? :P

  • @alexcheetah79 interested to know too

  • I'm glad you were not afraid to post this video even though it could be dangerous to the morons out there who choose to ignore common sense. Alot of good information is not passed around for fear of being sued by some dope that doesn't use his/her head. Thanks for helping by sharing your knowledge.

  • i have this problem with my 2001 integer, my friend (a mechanic) said it most deffinately is the wheel bearing but he also said id have to replace the wheel bearing assembly or hub or whatever but when i search for them online i only find them for the rear and not my front, any suggestions?

  • you jack this up in a weird place. usually its behind the wheel. also couldnt it also be a brake related noise?

i hit a pothole the other night and the back passanger wheel got a hell of a thump, and then the grinding noise kicked in. i jacked it up today and released the handbrake and turned the wheel to see... then notched the handbrake up 2 - 3 notches and spun the wheel. checked bearing and its the bearing :( you should advice people that "they do this at their own risk".

  • @ zepppster ... eat a dick

  • Thanks Eric. I was having some noises on the front of the same car you tested. Now its time to do a wheel bearing. Also check out richpin06. He has alot of Saturn fixes too

  • Thanks Eric!!

  • @leebizz1313 how nice

  • Sears said it was the 2 front wheel bearings. I hope they can tell me when it comes time to change them its only one bearing. Anyways I had 20inch rims on my 06 infiniti m 35 x and I read the bad bearings could of been from the bigger rim & tire combo is that true?

  • @lorenzo1001000

It could happen. Putting bigger wheels on your car without having the camber adjusted can put more stress on your bearings. It all depends on the type of wheel, the offset, the design of the knuckle and the difference between the new and the OEM wheels.

  • Ok this is all great info.Have a question hoping I can get a answer to. I took my car into discount tires ,after changing my tires twice Thinking the noise, I been hearing was from having a set of worn down tires. After finding the noise was still there got a second set of new tires yokohamas from good year kinda of a down grade but sales man said there a softer tire so anything to get to get rid of the noise right! So ya the tire was a little quieter but the noise was still there.

  • This is not the right way at all lol I mean it works but I could see some stupid beaner or rich kid killing himself from doing it this way.

  • also the noise would be louder on the side with more weight. the way i diagnose them at my shop is take the vehicle on a back road and give the steering wheel a little wiggle to make the car tilt side to side a little. or making slow s-turns. usually doing this at about 15- 20 mph, can diagnose a bearing easily. :)

  • Thanks Eric, I have a bad bearing and I was thinking of doing this test exactly as described before seeing this on youtube - the concern I had was whether I would hear the noise with the bearing not carrying any load, anyway it seems that you can so I'll give it a go.

  • If you do this test and the noise is not there, and this is very common on 4WD and AWD vehicles, take a look at your tires. They may be what's referred to as chopped. And that is the tires tread is not smooth. It has high and low spots on the inner and/or outer edges of the tires. This will cause a similar if not the exact same noise as a bad wheel bearing. Also some bad wheel bearings may only make noise with the weight of the car on it or may be coming from a none drive wheel.

  • Another way to stop the wheels from spinning when in the air, and the way i was taught, put the trans in neutral (NOT PARK) and shut the engine off. It will stop the wheels. If you press the brake pedal too hard one side may stop before the other and ABS (if equipped on your car) may active, causing weird noises. If you put it in park you will hear some very bad noises and possibly damage the trans.

  • What if its RWD?

  • hey eric, can you help me i have a 2005 dodge ram 2500 and it started making this grinding noise from the front i thought it was the brakes so i took it to a les schwab tire center to get the brakes checked and they said they were fine so i left it and now like 2 weeks later the noise came back and now it has a vibration to it. It vibrates when i accelerate, what do you think it is. Bad U-joint, or the tranny.

  • hey eric on my 2003 f150 supercrew rwd, when I drive I hear a whir whir sound like I hear every rotation of the tires. But I don't feel any vibration on the highway its just the whir whir sound.Do you think its wheel bearings?

  • Hi, can you or anyone tell me if there is also a possibility it might be a drive shaft bearing, and if so how to decipher witch it is?

  • i hit a ditch and later on while driving home i hear a loose noise.

  • ... CV is bad. i can understand while driving to the side u can hear a noise if the CV is bad, but can this be the cause for the noise while turning when the vehicle is dead stop? please advise. as always, thank you so much, god bless u my friend. hope to hear from you soon.

  • Hi Eric, Long time no see, how have u been my friend? a quick question, in my Honda when the vehicle is stationary, specially up a hill where the front gets all the weight, and when i turn the wheels, i hear like a knock from the wheels, sounds like "duk tak". i asked from my Mechanic he said it could be the CV joint. but he couldnt have a proper look. can this be the CV? or the steering column? however, when i turn the wheels all the way to the left and take off, i hear noises as if the CV is..

  • are you single

  • @toobusyacres Nope.

  • @EricTheCarGuy got a question for you about a wheel berring. I have a 02 saturn l200, similar to the sl 1 or 2 (which ever it is) in this vid. i have a humming noise at the right front of my L 200 when i go down the road at about 30 or 40 you can hear it pretty good, however when you turn the wheel to the right (thus taking the weight off the right side of the car) it goes away. go strait or left it hums nice and loud. i suspect a bad right ft. berring. What do you think?

  • Would you say an easier way is to jack the car up and grab the 12 and 6 o clock positions and yank it back and forth. And that there should be no play at all?

Also isn't it safe practice to always to keep it on jack stands? I suspect I may have bad bearings as on the left front wheel it has a whistle that goes and slows down depending on the speed and only heard while driving straight... or off the gas...

  • @ayske1 Wheel bearings aren't always 'loose' when they go bad, in fact they make noise long before they become loose in my experience. Yes jack stands would be great but if your not under the car and doing a quick check like this one I feel this would be OK but it really depends on the person doing the work. Thanks for the comment.

  • @EricTheCarGuy Can the noises from bad bearings also come and go as mine tends to come and go but it's definitely more frequent now in the past half year...

  • @ayske1 Sort of, sometimes when you turn at speed you can hear it more pronounced than others, in fact if you read through the comments some use this method to diagnose this problem.

  • My truck makes a grinding noise from the outside when i turn the wheel to either side. Could u please tell me what it could be? I'm not familiar with trucks

  • @coolcatcilla Hard to say especially since you didn't list the type and year of the truck but you might want to watch the video I did on diagnosing suspension noises as that might help you find the problem. You might also want to post the question over at the ETCG forum as I answer questions there more regularly as well as a lot of other great people. Good luck.

  • GENIUS!!!! This method helped me save time and money. Thank you very much.

  • @j33zyt33zy I love it, thanks for the comment.

  • @nsx699 It sounds like it could be an electronic issue with the transmission, you might want to see if there are any codes stored for transmission faults that could give you a clue as to what the issue is. It wouldn't be a bad idea to check the fluid level and condition either just to be on the safe side. Good luck.

  • nice way to find bad bearings i always use my hand over one ear and turn my head while driving trick to find bearing if i cant feel the bad bearing while shaking the tire

  • @4g63junkie Interesting method, thanks for your input.

  • thanks! this simple tip saved me so much frustration. i was seconds away from pulling off the wrong steering knuckle before finding this video.

  • @wreckmx I'm glad I was able to help, thanks for the comment.

  • could it not be done without the engine on ???

  • @Rajachemayel Not really as you wouldn't be able to hear the noise as well.

  • Eric, is that exhaust sound clip in the beginning from the Steve McQueen chase scene? It sounds like it, lol. Way cool if it is! HAHAHAHA

  • Is this possible to do with a four wheel drive vehicle?

  • @ivanbgct Only if you get all 4 wheels off of the ground and it doesn't have a locking differential.

  • Excellent video and to the point! Thanks Love it!

  • @tomisp68 Glad you liked it, thanks for the comment.

  • I have a bearing on my front drivers side that seems to have seized up. I took it to a mechanic and they couldn't even get it off. Now it's making the most heinous crunching noise. Of course I've been driving with this for months. I would love to take it off myself...but it sounds too much of project. and it will cost like 700 bucks for a mechanic to replace hub and bearings. Any suggestions?

  • @shawndw1000 I'm kind of in the dark without looking at it for myself sorry.

  • como saber cual wheel bearring esta malo en la parte de atras ?

  • @XXShikillo4uXX Si se trata de tracción delantera se puede girar las ruedas con la mano para ver si se puede escuchar el ruido o siente alguna aspereza en que es viajar.

  • @EricTheCarGuy ok..gracias

  • It does go without saying, but maybe you should add a text overlay telling people with rear wheel drive to jack up their rear wheels, and for 4wd users to never use this method :D

Great videos, I enjoy watching them

  • @bleddyn1 I believe I mentioned both, thanks for the comment.

  • Having been an under car tech for about 10 years before moving on to other vocations, I really enjoy your videos. I just came across them was surfing just bored on this fine October afternoon watching the first snow of the season falling here in Vermont, and was like I like this guys stuff ,brings back memories.I still do my own stuff and some side work for good friends, keep up the great videos.

  • @gearjamr550 Thank you very much for that comment I really appreciate it. Stay warm.

  • I used this procedure after watching your video. I would have put money down it was the front drivers side wheel bearing that was making the noise. To make sure it was, I did what you did in this video, and upon doing so I realized it was the passsenger side wheel bearing. So I thank you for posting this video or I would have replaced the wrong bearing.

  • @rickson11000 It also helps eliminate a tire issue as they often sound like wheel bearings too. Thanks for the comment.

  • Hi Eric. Think I have a bad bearing issue on my car. Sound is coming from rear. I found out that if I take right turn, noise from back becomes weaker, if I take left turn, it s louder. So I guess: right turn>more force on left wheels>less on right>less stress on bearing>no noise and vice versa. Based on this observation, do you think that I can make sure on which side bad bearing is? Otherwise I have no idea how to check it on the rear axle. Thanks in advance.

  • @Petr7648 You could also try jacking up the wheel and spinning it by hand to see if you hear the noise or feel any roughness in it's travel.

  • Eric@ alright man will do. Thanks for the tip

  • Alright so im pretty sure i needa replace my wheel bearing in my dodge dakota but im not positive. I can hear when im driving straight and it does get faster when i drive faster but is not very load. When i make roght hand turns and only right hand turns its damn load. Its not exactly huming the kinda a clunking grinding noise? Wat do u think is up

  • @arcflash6 Hard to say really, you might want to watch the video I did on Finding Suspension noises to help you track it down. In your situation I might also want to have a look at the brakes just to be sure everything was OK there.

  • does a bad wheel bearing have to do anything with the transmission bumping when shifting gear?

  • @IDV84 No it shouldn't.

  • @IDV84 That would be A engine mount or the trans itself,

  • no THANK YOU...

  • check for play first!

  • @888888greg In my experience bearings that are noisy don't often have play, it's the quiet ones that have play. I would say it's more important to make sure it's not tire noise by rotating the tires first. Thanks for the comment.

  • @EricTheCarGuy Very true, just had the same issue.. no play but bad wheel bearing. same sound.

  • You are braver than me. I use a infrared thermometer. Take the hub caps off. Get on the interstate. Drive fast. Get off the exit. Pull over safe. check both bearings (shaft) with thermometer. Of course if the brakes are dragging this will mess up the test. The bad side was 30 degrees warmer.

I have an Alero. I was on my 6th wheel bearing in 2 years. 130k miles. Popular Mechanics ran an article suggesting a bad electrical ground causing arcing in the bearings. I cleaned all the grounds. Fixed!!

  • @rlund3 That is an excellent method and works very well but the average person doesn't have one of those thermometers typically. That grounding issue has also caused transmission bushings to fail on older cars. Thanks very much for the comment.

  • I have a all wheel drive car and i suspect a wheel bearing has gone, is there any way that i can jack the car up like you did to isolate the wheels?

  • @TheVisser3 The only way is to get all 4 wheels off the ground. A few people have made the suggestion of swerving while driving to isolate the bad bearing, you might want to read through the comments below for that. I see a lot of tire issues causing this type of noise so you might consider rotating the tires first to see if the noise changes or goes away before you condemn a bearing. Good luck.

  • Can someone help me? I own a GMC Yukon. The first thing I noticed was that the ABS was pulsing when I brake at low speed in a curve. I checked the rear wheel and there was a gap (loose) on both sides, but never any noise when I drive. What's wrong? Maybe just to tighten the wheel bearings? I know it is possible to do that on some models. I hope my english is understandable. //Christian Sweden.

  • @unitedstates907 You need to first start by pulling any ABS codes that you might have. If you don't have any codes you might check the signals coming out of each of the speed sensors to see if they are sending a good signal, I don't think 'tightening' the wheel bearings is going to do much good. Good luck.

  • I am replacing the wheel bearing on a 2004 hyundai accent and am having trouble with the ballstud nuts. The nut is just spinning. It loosened to a point, but is now just spinning. Help! Please.... :D

  • @garyenns The stud may be stripped, you may have to drill it out and replace it.

  • @EricTheCarGuy My great appreciation and thanks always to you and others on YT who have so freely shared your expertise with your viewers. You guys have empowered us to learn to be more in control of our car repairs and in doing so, you will be more blessed because Jesus did say in the bible....."It is more blessed to give than to receive. "

  • @opsvideo2008 I'm very happy that my work helps you and I really appreciate your comment, thank you.

  • I was thinking of an alternative & practical way of solving this dilemma by buying both a front and a rear wheel bearing, and replacing one at a time to see if the noise will go away. If the noise does go away, then the defective wheel bearing is the one that we have replaced. If it is a rear bearing , then I would keep the front bearing as a spare part, and vice-versa. After all, if the rear bearing has failed, it is just a matter of time before the front will fail as well.

  • @opsvideo2008 I think that is a very time consuming and expensive method and I would suggest you rethink it unless you like doing wheel bearings. In fact your method goes against everything I try and teach. Good luck.

  • @EricTheCarGuy What you said is right. If I did replace a good wheel bearing with another, I would have wasted my effort & replacement part. I did raise my back wheels and checked them for vertical play by holding them at the 12 and 6 o' clock position as well as listening for coarse sound of the wheel turning. On opening my right rear wheel, I happened to be correct as one of my wheel bearings ( mine has inner & outer bearings) has a defective ball bearing creating the coarseness.

  • @opsvideo2008 Now your talking diagnosis! Well done.

  • Hi Eric, I fully agree with you. This can be a potentially dangerous method of checking for wheel bearing noise. Therefore I will not be trying out your method but I still appreciate what you are trying to do here. Keep safe at all times.

  • @opsvideo2008 Caution must be exorcized whenever you work on a vehicle but this method is perfectly safe with a vehicle that does not have all wheel drive or limited slip.

  • CAN U MAKE A VIDEO OF HOW TO DO A GOOD HONDA SWAP?

  • @SNEAKGANG What, swap it for a Toyota?

  • Thank You very much, Very helpful

  • Hey Eric, My steering shakes lightly while cruising around 30-45mph.. I've replaced front rotors and pads with new and checked tie rods, ball joints, and wheel bearings for looseness and wear.. All seems fine. Only thing I can think of is an unbalanced wheel but it doesn't shake at other speeds. My alignment is off. What can it be? Thanks

  • @fusionstar916 Actually that sounds like a tire problem, try rotating them to see if the shake goes away or moves to the back.

  • hey and thanks for the tips, I have a 2001 honda accord, but with a high pitch sound on the front left, the CV joint has already been replaced, and done correctly. If its a wheel bearing it doesnt sound like the noice in this video. Any advice ? tks again ! tommyg524 aattyyaahhoooddottccoommm

  • @tommyg524 Wheel bearings don't often make that kind of noise, I recommend looking at the brakes.

  • fake and gay!

  • and how if you have real car (manual car)

  • @Psychopathe24 It works the same for a manual.

  • 13 people got hurt doing this

  • my car have certain noise. i think its coming from the front wheels..i know its not the brakes but but it similar to that noise..and weird thing is that only make noise after driving for like 30 minutes or so. and it makes alot of noise when driving at low speed between 20 to 35 mph then after i go about 45 and up noise gone..and when it make noise and i hold my brakes it stop...this could be a sign of bad bearing..plz help...

  • @veedabestchef It could be a lot of things really, you should also check the exhaust, the engine performance, the tires, and the transmission for a noise like this. You can however use this test to help determine if it's a wheel bearing or not, I would suggest waiting till it starts to make the noise before performing the test however.

  • Nice drawings in the back by the end of your video!!!! During a vehicle inspection of my car 1 bearing on the front axle (it is a rear drive car) was felt to be waering out just a little bit. I missed that one myself...so it was a good inspection conducted. How?Jacking up the car, spinning the wheel by hand, while spinning put your finger on the strut and shock absorber and you can feel small imperfections from the bearing that cannot be heard yet. After appr 90.000 mls I changed both bearings.

  • CV JOINT??? Maybey???

  • @buttmanroad Those 'click' bearings 'roar'.

  • any kind of quick tip for a full time 4wd Jeep? got a whining noise sometimes, only when its driven to operating temps, its at its loudest at 40mph, and changes wether there is torque applied or not, it comes from the front. Oh and the differential fluid and pinion bearings were just replaced in the front. I dont care much about, its been there a long time now and nothing's happened. Its got approx 250,000 miles.

  • @Dotchetter If it's a Jeep I would be checking the transmission as they are known for transmission problems and I've heard several make a noise similar to what you describe. If you have air bubbles on the dip stick when you check the fluid this is probably where I would begin my search for the noise. Wheel bearings normally make noise ALL the time not intermittently, at least in my experience.

  • what if it makes a sound like its banging around. could it just be loose?

  • @RAGGINIT11 That may not be a bearing issue, try moving the wheel top to bottom, side to side and look for loose components.
