  • it reminds me of wearing a mis-matched sweatsuit, riding through downtown London on an elephant.... who is also wearing a mis-matches sweatsuit (possibly green and purple).

  • #backgroundvocals! They just slay me! I love this band!

  • the begining tune reminds me of the begining of "Time to Pretend" by MGMT, both great songs!

  • One of the best albums of all time.

  • unvalid is an invalid word...

  • i picture myself listening to this while riding on a bus or something through the countryside at night, looking up at the sky. i feel the same for some of their other stuff too.

  • @mrfrenchhornftw it reminds me of riding the bus in San Francisco!

  • o man o my o me

  • This is very Paul Simon-esque

  • did anyone who could be bothered see the lame arse act that beat H.Blues and Gillian Welch for the best folk album grammy.??? Civil Wars..wtf! an average folk duo featuring an annoying woman singer and a guy who's best attribute was that he resembled johnny depp..but its what you'd expect from those musically deaf retards at the "Shammy's" example 1964 "best new band" .. "the swingle singers????? say no more ..

  • @whoarethebrainpigs Hey. I love Fleet Foxes and maybe they did deserve the Grammy, but the Civil Wars are extremely good. And I may be biased because John Paul's from where I'm from, but they definitely aren't average. Poison and Wine is a modern classic in my opinion.

  • @youtubbs67 fair enough ..i listened and just wasnt that impressed .and i judge music on its merit not home town allegience. yeah, look he's ok, but as i said, I cant stand that pretentious bint .

  • @whoarethebrainpigs Well I guess that's what opinions are for. And yeah. This is definitely the best folk album of the year. If not the 21st century.

  • @youtubbs67 civil wars sucks, it was only choosen becouse its the new hipster band...

  • @SmelDiferenToMidget Check your grammar bud. But there are a lot of hipsters who like the Civil Wars. Same with Fleet Foxes and pretty much everything except for Nickelback and Creed. So I guess hipsters have good taste!

  • @youtubbs67 Wouldnt you like to speak in Norwegian, Russian, or Portuguese? because i know how to speak those langueges fluently, so GTFO with grammar. It also seems you are a butthurt hipster whos opinion is unvalid

  • @SmelDiferenToMidget Nah I'm fine with English. And me? A hipster? I wish I was cool enough for that, but they told me I don't own enough vintage fedoras or Ray-Bans knockoffs.

  • @youtubbs67 im sorry if i was offensive, it seems you are actually a pretty cool guy!

  • @SmelDiferenToMidget Really? Well then we can be friends! Sorry I made fun of your grammar. I tend to do that a lot on youtube haha.

  • This song makes me think about the sound of waves at night, birds chirping, sunrises, basically anything in nature peace related.

  • such a good intro to the album

  • FLEET FOXES, My Morning Jacket, Iron & Wine, Band of Horses, City and Colour, The Black Keys, Maps & Atlases, Incubus, 311, Circa Survive, Brand New, Bayside, and Jack Johnson...One of THE best combinations for a road trip!

  • @jakemorey92 lol a list of my least favorite indie rock bands (except for fleet foxes and band of horses)

  • This whole album makes me so emotional. It's just...so beautiful ;_; <3. One of the best bands of this generation.

  • I absolutely adore this group...their music is just so pure, so beautiful...it just makes you feel sooo incredibly light and happy! Truly the folky inspiration music has needed for way too long now! Love it!

  • one thing for sure....if you think these guys are big now ...wait for another 10 years...........they are going to be fucking huge.....and so they should ,,a breath of fresh air ...!!!!!

  • @originalsessions His real name is Moctezuma.

  • FUN FACT: Montezuma was the ninth tlatoani or ruler of Tenochtitlan, reigning from 1502 to 1520. The first contact between Indigenous civilizations of Mesoamerica and Europeans took place during his reign, and he was killed during the initial stages of the Spanish conquest of Mexico, when Conquistador Hernán Cortés and his men fought to escape from the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan.

  • I can't stop, i click on replay, and on replay and i just keep smilling.

  • this tune reminds me of "it ain't me babe" by bob dylan

  • When fleet foxes die God will listen to them forever

  • I wish they had so many more albums their music is so awesome!

  • oh man, oh my, oh me.

  • Reminds me of The Smiths, like a modern day one.

  • @IvyNirvana huh? not even close sorry... I love the Smiths but FF sound nothing like them, Johnny Marr would agree. Someone said FF sound like Simon and Garfunkel which is much more akin to FF.

  • @coolhand6656 ooh, im not so sure about that, ive just listened to my second f.f. song in a row, and ever, the first being lorelai..and i agree this song is a bit simon and garf, but its also in the great (folk- there i said it) lineage of people like mercury rev and galaxie 500 for starters. johnny marr wouldnt agree with anything btw, ive met him. good chat though. oh, i just noticed the 30000 comments that u mite have been responding to..smiths rule agreed!

  • @coolhand6656 Well it just reminds me of the smiths.

  • the fleet faxes

  • fleet foxes are almost like.... our generation's simon and garfunkel....

  • @ryan473 That's exactly how I describe them to people: Simon and Garfunkel for the modern twenty-something.

  • The lyrics are just... ugh, just greatness on every level!

  • This is about as good as melodies get.

  • I was angry and just a little drunk until I heard Fleet Foxes. I feel really peaceful now. Music that affects you that way is worth listening to, regardless of whatever label you slap on an artist.

  • This is SUCH a cool song !

  • I hate going to videos of indie bands and hearing people say "oh they sound like this" or "our generation's brian wilson, our generation's simon and garfunkel." Don't compare old stuff to now. Fleet Foxes are fucking Fleet Foxes.

  • @hammeredbro95 its more of a compliment. of course they're fleet foxes. they do have their own unique sound. but there's no denying the influence of wilson or simon and garfunkel. its just how people relate the music to the entire of all music. in their minds it almost gives it a special type of relevance. i'm not saying i agree with it, just that its how people learn to love the music.

  • @libertyhopeful18 Yeah I get it, I just mean sometimes people should stop obsessing over all the old stuff, It's good and all but it's the past.

  • I like this song

  • As much as the two commenters above have very vaild points I definitely prefer Sun Giant over Helplessness Blues. Helplessness Blues (to me at least) doesnt seem to have the same resonating feeling to me. Sun Giant was an album you could listen to when outside in the sun enjoy a day, but you could also listen to the same exact song inside on a cold day and feel a totally different emotion. While I do like HB and everything FF's do, I think that Sun Giant to me is an album I will always remember.

  • 1:43 or just cocks in the ceiling???

  • @RobbieHassett haha i can see where you would think that but i think it is cracks. hahaha but then agian...you never know.

  • @RobbieHassett LMAO funny as fuck!

  • @RobbieHassett cracks in the ceiling

  • @RobbieHassett I suppose, if you squint your ears.

  • @RobbieHassett Cracks in the ceiling :P

  • had thanksgiving dinner yesterday night, and played all fleet fox music.

    hellz yeahh.

  • This gives me chills and brings tears to my eyes.

  • I do prefer the self-titled album, but this is one beautiful song.

  • lovely

  • i just discovered the fleet foxes.. i'm trying to limit myself to 1 new song a day b/c that's all my heart can take ;)

  • Nothing brings tears faster. I'm in awe right now.

  • These guys and the beatles are my favorite bands of all time.

  • I'm crazy but i think i can hang in there now

  • One time I was listening to this song driving through the Disney World parking lot daydreaming about Emmanuel Lewis, lifted from the fog, the wheel around me. In the distance two voices were heard, "Is that him?" said the first, while the other voice remained silenced. Never again will those voices remove from my mind the thoughts that keep me holding on, during times when you need to hold on to something, like a friend or a telephone pole, or maybe a red box kiosk.

  • Oh Robin...keep singing, for ever.

  • I have a crush on my bestfriend. One day while we were on the bus, he put on his Ipod and played this song for me. It will forever remind me of him, and maybe one day I'll have the courage to tell him my real feelings.

  • Rest your frantic minds and just enjoy this beauty

  • i love dropping acid to this album. it makes me cry.

  • @sexdrugsnsk8boarding YES! FINALLY SOMEBODY JUST LIKE ME. Good stuff man.

  • @gummybbearr (: absolutely man.

  • Resonant and pure and beautiful.

  • I'll end it here. Fleet Foxes really sound NOTHING LIKE SIMON AND GARFUNKEL. That's kind of like saying that Old Iron and Wine sounds like Crosby Stills and Nash. People, just because FF play a brand of folk inspired music, does not automatically mean that they are our generation's Simon and Garfunkel, or our generation's CSN. Come on, I thought people that enjoyed this kind of music was smarter than that.

  • So.....That's what it feels like to walk through Heaven. Simply breath-taking.

  • ive never heard of you Montezuma, untill i was watching Slayer, Raining blood, and checked out your comment to check you out. After listening to a few of your songs, I had had enough. im sure your a great bar band, but i could tell you i wouldnt pay the 5 dollar cover to see you

  • @emem1983 lol, what a scrub. the band's called fleet foxes, by the way

  • Loved the first. Nearly shit bricks when I heard they were making a second album.

Third album? Going to need a new pair of pants.

  • I love the Fleet Foxes as much as almost any band that's out there. But if you want to hear the new Simon and Garfunkle, you have to listen to Kings of Convenience.

  • @niklb I agree, I see Fleet Foxes as being similar to CSNY

  • I wish these guys were better know. If more people listened to the Fleet Foxes the world be a much better place. I love this album so much.

  • Takes a couple times to fully understand how great this album is. Fleet Foxes are incredible live as well.

  • What an absolutely immense song.

  • @trackstar195 Real artists.Great feeling.

  • I remember hearing them play this at the Williamsburg Waterfront. And yes, I did cry like a bitch. XD

  • I will always always ALWAYS remember buying this, my favourite album, and sitting down to listen to it for the first time. The harmony thirty seconds in impacted me in such a beautiful, beautiful way.

Robin Pecknold is a genius. Can't wait to see what Fleet Foxes become over the next ten years.

  • Powerful stuff

  • homest ta god.listen to bruce springsteen "im goin down"

  • simon an garfunkel sounding yes but with a splash of beach boys thrown in for good measure!!! best thing ive heard in a long time! sheer brilliance!

  • They sound kinda like Simon and Garfunkel! :D YAY! <3

  • @DontGiveMeSteve I was just thinking the same thing (; what an accomplishment for Fleet Foxes

  • its funny when people complain or worry about specifics when this is the very music that just tells you to not worry and be happy. so relax and listen to this beautiful music, close your eyes, and smile. :)

  • why argue people??? life is far to short i should know. we have all come here to listen to fleet foxes. so lets just do that. such a peaceful song as well. love fleet foxes and each other. x

  • This my favorite song of the album.

  • @gymnopedies13 LOL I gotta tell you, your come back is not bad. And your use of the word "imperious" (note to me ignore jerk) has rendered me sort of getting fond of you which takes the fight out of me. I accept your criticism that I could be perceived as a snobbish superior gobshite. You should go back to ur original comment ans see how it reads. Peace to you brother, expert on harmonies that are slightly out of tune which is something I never came across before until u pointed it out ;)

  • @thepumpdontwork

If the harmonies were spot-on perfect, the song would not grab you by the throat the way it does. FF were obviously smart enough to know that, and know the feel was more important than the level of perfection. It's no different than getting choked up in the middle of a passionate plea; lovers don't moan in tune with each other, and yet these are moments that make life worth living, just like this tune.

  • There are some songs that you can enjoy while doing other things. Driving, Dancing, Running. Then there are songs like this that grab you by the heart and questions your life. It throws you into the icy cold snow that burns your flesh just before wrapping you up with a warm blanket next to a fire as you fall asleep.

  • @iBeParker thats a beutiful quote or whatever nice totaly aggree 110%

  • This song makes me so homesick.

  • I wish I lived in a world where there was no such thing as a "hipster"

  • I dreamed of Montezuma after listening to this song, thank you for giving one my most beautiful dreams, Fleet Foxes.

  • ONLY LOVE CAN SAVE THIS PLANET

    FEAR LEADS TO DEATH

WE MUST WORRY MORE ABOUT OTHER THAN OURSELVES

  • Sublime piece. Sublme group.

  • screw hipsters.. I don't give a shit how you dress or why you only listen to things before they're popular. We're all here for the same reason... we love this music. Everyone please stop judging and just let yourself be submerged in this beautiful song.

  • Awesome !

  • I went to their concert in nashville this past May. Best day of my life. Amazing talent. I was brought to tears. Multiple times. End of story.

  • ningun grupo en los últimos años me ha llenado tanto con cada tema que hacen!! puras joyitas!!

  • @thejaszczashaw I have this thing where when I have a song stuck in my head I immediately can replace it! Haha goodbye Rebecca Black, hello Blue Ridge Mountains! ;) But it only stays stuck so long.

  • So question, from reading the past posts, is being a hipster bad?

  • @cottoncandy113 It's bad when the hipster community adopts something that was a part of your identity before it came under the mainstream bandwagon and inadvertently labeled you a hipster as well. Suddenly something you loved is lumped in with a current fad and you can't escape the poser personalities. Those kids wearing the Scorsese glasses are the same breed of chameleons that sported aviators a few years back when it was the epitome of college-aged cool. So to some, yes hipsters are bad.

  • @cottoncandy113 people always like to hate on hispsters. it's just a name to stereotype people who want to go "against the grain, and against mainstream" a lot of them only like music when it's not popular and then abandon the band when it becomes known to other people. that's why people always comment on hipsters. i don't think there's anything wrong with it though. the people who comment on it just want to be smartasses and put other people down so it seems like they know "real music"

  • I want to make an invention so I can make this song permanently stuck in my head!

  • amazing

  • Who would dislike this...

  • @lucasv1179 uh no, obviously you have adeptly listened to this album. The songwriting on this grew IMMENSELY, it is an album about a man struggling to find where he fits; in the past, in the present and everywhere he gets caught in between. It is a man growing up, it is a man changing, it is a man finding himself. This was one of the greatest albums of the last ten years and you saying "the first one was better" is just such a hipster cop out. Not calling you one dude, just saying..it really is

  • @markgundy I guess anikorising didn't realize that your divine taste is the only objective way to evaluate his/her own opinion on the two albums. Piss off, some people like the first album.

  • @genderbenderjennn

You're welcome. Only women bleed, this song is a blessing that's what I meant. You have great taste if i may,

  • this album sucks compared to the first one. the first one just had a magical feel to it.

  • @thychaos what if?

  • Beautiful!

  • seeing them in denver on thursday...can't wait!

  • What an amazing piece of art.

  • Just the best.

  • Love this band, gave it a 8.5/10. But they would sound much better without the reverb and "aahhs" and "oohhhs"

  • Lordy, this is beautiful. Bet I get pregnant cos of this and i'm a bloke.

  • Love these guys, love them so much. One of my most favorite bands of all time (:

  • @imazebra1234567 same same same

  • did someone say massive erection?

  • Check out my "Blue Ridge Mountains" cover, with clarinet, flute and bódhran, on my profile's page! It will take you only a few minutes, guaranteed.

  • This is beautiful.

  • My favorite song by them, and although this album didn't live up to my expectations (probably because their first album was one of my favorites ever), I still love them, and this album has some of their best songs.

  • Just curious, what makes this music so "intelligent"? The ethereal vocals.. the folky-ness.. the life-pondering lyrics.. ?? Because, those are some pretty superficial things to declare something intelligent. I guess, maybe, anything that comes out of an "indie scene" has GOT to be intelligent, right? Or perhaps we are simply buying the image the so-called "indie scene" is feeding us. Music should not be about image.

  • @gubbj

Well, personally, I do think Helplessness Blues is a very intelligent album. What makes something great is almost never just one of it's features, but rather the underlying connection between them all, the sum of it's parts. Ethereal vocals are just one possible trait of a band, and although not entirely uncommon, there's more to their vocal presentation than just that. A lot of lyrics are "life-pondering", but that doesn't always mean they're good. I think his lyrics are excellent.

  • Comment removed

  • @gubbj

But you might not and that would be fine, as long as you give them a chance and decide that you don't. Just try not to pre-judge something based on labels.

  • @gubbj well i think it has something to do with the tightly woven harmonies and the chord progression of every song. i hate indie...fleet foxes is not indie. it's folk.

  • @iValentine22 Indie is not a genre of music. Indie means that they are signed to an independent record label as opposed to a major record label. They are an indie folk band.

  • @1993MURDODUNLOP

you are right. i was referring to "indie" as the wave of style that people (as someone put above) associate with alternative or non-mainstream bands. i was trying to make the distinction that fleet foxes is a folk band and has nothing to do with the "indie" style.

  • just discovered this band and i don't think i'll ever find music i love after this its just to perfect...i'm in love <3

  • This song - and Fleet Foxes - are breath taking....simple as that.

  • brings a tear to my eye, and I mean that in a good way.

  • Oh man what I used to be

  • 2:56 to 3:11 My favorite line/part of this wonderful song!

  • i love this song- so beautiful

  • I didn't really appreciate the song on hearing it first time round.... Now I just love it!

  • Fuck, I love this song.

  • I belong the so called Beach Boys Simon & Garfunkel and CSN generation but glad I'm still around to appreciate this beautiful music. Great sounds like this belongs to people of all generations and has nothing to do with when you were born. I am the 60s 70s 80s 90s, and naughties generation. With a little luck I may still be here for the next decade too and look forward to more from this great band

    :))

  • simply bliss :) <3

  • oh crosby stills and nash, oh beach boys, oh postrock, let's all come together

  • absolutely amazing

  • Grammy for sure

  • Beautiful.

  • doesnt the intro with the guitar makes you think a liltle bit of time to pretend???

  • how does this have only 88 thousnad views? best song in my opinion..

  • 2 people are ridiculously stupid!

    Also, 2 people disliked this = [

  • there is only one reason I don't like Fleet Foxes: they make me feel unintelligent and unartistic ... in comparison, most of us are though

  • simon/garfunkel plus beach boys harmonies are melting my face

  • best album released so far in 2011

  • @burtontool That is my favorite part of this song :)

    It's such a beautiful song.

  • "From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli; We fight our country's battles: In the air, on land, and sea."

"Oh man. What I used to be. Montezuma to Tripoli."

This song's about a dead marine.

  • i'll see you in a week.

  • This song's only been out for a month now and I already have so many memories attached to it. It nearly makes me cry when I listen to it now...

That's the sign of a great song, let alone a great album.

  • Wonderful! Can't wait until the Hammersmith Apollo shows, but why the hell are they supporting Take That in Cardiff? Beyond strange! :/

  • What can I say? This song is just transcendent. I can't even find the words.

  • Never have i experienced an album that has touched me as deeply as this one. Robin P was born to make music.
