I always start out with a large "canner" stew pot. If stew is too watery or loose, add some potato flakes. This stew is best eaten with Homemade drop biscuits!
I have to admit stews are delicious. I just don't have the patience to wait for them to cook. I would probably use a pressure cooker. Done in half an hour. Looks delectable though.
oh... my... good... ness. this is only second vid I have viewed and you now have my subscription. I have a request. I have been craving stew but my choice of meat is venison (deer; for those who dont know) any other dish like deer steak or chilli (gets gritty and fine in chilli) could you "spice it up". or maybe you know of a different dish with venision. reach out to your fellow southerners! (my cajun blood has plenty of requests ;D)
It's interesting how everyone seems to make this particular dish differently. It seems that the biggest requirement for it is that it has a sort of smoky barbecue-y flavour to it. And that everything else seems debatable far as possible meats and vegetables go.
The smoke flavor is supposed to come from your smoked meat. The stew orginated from hunters that used the game they caught at the time and the veggies they had on hand. You should use different meats and veggies to see what you like best.
Hey Dave! I really enjoy watching you cook. I've used some your recipes and they turned out great. You do a great job and your dishes look so very delish! Do you have a recipe for stewed potatoes and onions? How about ho cake? These are two things that my grandmother use to make and they are very good. Thanks!
Well done, Chef Dave! I prepared this recipe tonight and I have to say it's the best I've had and well worth the time invested. The flavors and texture are fantastic! (We substituted Roma tomatoes and used plain French's mustard.) The results is an amazing bowl of stew, every bit as good as the world-famous Lexington, NC BBQ joints. Thanks for sharing. It's a new "family favorite".
Looks awesome, Dave. The cold weather is coming upon us and I've been itching to make some stews and chilis. I love the fall time of year! : ) Dave..do you think this would be good with deer meat? Have you tried it? My daddy's got a freezer full and I think it would be awesome! I'll post and let you know how it turns out. Thanks for the great recipe!
dave i had my staples out ages ago and 2 days after thay wer out i went to the park ( wer acsident happend ) and i triped and bumped my leg ( not very hard ) but it split it back open quite a bit of blood again comes out ) and it is still healing now it is just making the last of the skin so the scab should go in about a week or so ( sounds nasty ) i can have them pics up in a vid just the 2 pics of it befor stapels and with staples ok dave byee keep up the vids byeee :)

Hey Dave, The stew looks good. Love the dutch oven cooking. I have the same problem with too much stuff in the pot. I have to use two of them at times. But everything is better in a dutch oven.
dave what is grits because i was watching dave jr cook brakfast and he has some good talant takes after his dad :) is grits like some sort of lentals and dried beens? tell ur son make some more vids ;)
omg ty dave u mentiond me at the start :) and im a bit bizzy with home stuff and i have had 10 staples in my leg so i cant stand for long :( but we did have rabit the other day but we gave it to the dog as it didnt smell as nice as it should but i will be making the vids soon :)
Great to see your videos in HQ now, maybe you can post in HD in the near future when Youtube finally fixes the framerate problems, because HD sucks right now on Youtube.
Good call on making this stew. Colonial Williamsburg in Virgina makes excellent version of this. It tastes amazing and kills any hangover's you may have. Thumbs up.
I made this stew yesterday. Didnt get done till late so I put it in fridge. Heated it up for lunch a few min ago. OM goodness. It is truly wonderful. We all love it. Thanks again Dave.
"Just cook it, we're supposed to be having fun". Priceless. Great video man! This recipie has more ingrediants than any I've ever seen! But it looked so tasty.
Hey dave, I am just curious. You have so many various recipes and they are all amazing, did you learn most of them while being in the military stationed in different countries?
Dave!! Thank you. I am going to make this. We missed you. Did they make you Partner? No more 10 min limit huh? Congrats. Well I was very pleased to see that this video had everything a Dave video should have: Italian Seasoning and plenty of affirmations that you can put whatever you want in yours! I like it Dace, keep it up. I think I'll cut back on the corn and Potatoes and replace them with Okra, Collards, and Pineapple! What do you think?
Looks great also. I plan on substituting pork for lamb. Also apple cider vinegar for white vinegar. Do you know if or how much that would change the taste?
Ok, so I finally gathered all of the ingredients. The only tweaks to what you recommended were the apple cider vinegar and a touch more liquid smoke than you recommended. Man ,that stuff was great! My only regret was taking so long to gather the ingredients!
