God this book gets so boring, but interesting. and you have to learn part of the Japanese language to properly understand. But no worries, it teaches you of the Japanese language and how to pro-nun-ciat it.
Toshiro Mifune was a very different director, and did fantastic movies. But he was only known in art houses back then. No way a Western production company would have done this.
I think the Japanese casting really supported this and made it a success. As a kid, helped me get a real interest in Japan.
Shogun is one of my favorite books ever. ive read it probably about 7 times. although a little different from the book, the miniseries is fathful to it, as it was done under Clavells supervision. i only wish Tai Pan was done in a similar way. was glad to see Noble House done as a mini series, Gai-Jin was a fairly boring book, but Whirlwind would be excellent, although with current tensions in the middle east, might be hard to make and maybe not too well recieved
@awazha i think that came about from a rift between Mifune and Kurosawa. they had a falling out after the filming of red beard. the film took a long time to film and caused an amount of stress on everyone involved, especially on the relationship with Kurosawa and Mifune.
I'm currently on page 180 out of 1152 of this book. I simply love it so far. I plan on watching the movie when I'm done, having heard of it before. From what I can tell, it's a pretty accurate depiction of the book, and because of that I'm left to wonder how long the movie is!
The television miniseries, Shogun, was produced in 1980. Nine hours long (twelve, including commercials), it aired over five nights. It starred Richard Chamberlain, Toshiro Mifune, Yoko Shimada, and John Rhys-Davies. It was edited into a two-hour version for theatrical release.
Personally, I'll try and find the 9 hour long series. Thanks for the trailer
well done! The only thing I can correct is the opening voice over. THe ship Erasmus is not Piloted by Major Blackthorne, but by Pilot-Major Blackthorne.
Ah yes, thanks to all the corrections. At the time I did not have the book on hand, just a VHS tape. Thanks for the feedback and questions. I have a website, .theasiansaga. com but I have not had time to add any content. If you're a fan of the series, I could use the help!
I am reading Shogun for the third time. Last time I read it was in 96, the first time was while I was actually in Japan. My favs in order of fav is; Shogun, Tai-Pan, King Rat and Nobel House. I thought Gai-Jin was the worst of the lot.
Ah Gai Jin was ok, didnt pick up until the fire. Shame that was his last book but third in the series...I would love to know what he had planned for the future.
These 3 ships didn't set sail from Japan as you say at the beginning. They set sail from Holland. Blackthorne was an english pilot on a Dutch ship. That's why in the first minute of your trailer he's called a heretic Dutchman.
I have had the box set of the series, on video, for the past 10 years at least. I understand that the dvd of the whole series is now available.
I remember when I watched the T.V. series as a youngster in the early Seventies, and it was a must see every week, for I think nine weeks. Fantastic stuff.
I love the novel as well, and i have yet to see the live-action version. The commercials made me want to watch it badly though; is there anywhere i can find it online?
too bad that where should be portugues language or latin it is english.in rest it seems to be a great movie ! i will search for it !
