I notice alot of comments on here about this being about a child singing to its father and that the song can be interpreted many different ways. I don't think so. In the song she says "and I can't walk away from you, baby, if I tried". I don't know many kids who refer to their fathers as baby. She is singing to either John or Mick, but definitely not her father. It is also a little too sultry to be sung to a father. That would just be disturbing.
The beauty of this song's lyrics is that they can mean different things to different people. The song can mean what YOU want it to mean. Now that's great songwriting!
McVie Never recieved the credit she should have for this song, she had such a Beautiful voice! I convinced our *mostly Country* band to play this one for me, only one read sheet music lol.....was rough for them but I LOVED this song and it was always a total Hit :)
'daddy' is a reference to her husband, johnny mcvie, who she had just DUMPED, for a fancy man...mcvie was chronically addicted to booze and drugs and she'd had enough...all the band members were in the process of breaking up when they cut this masterpiece...
it's not about parenthood - it's about relationship breakdown and the ultimate loss of faith in 'love'...
Christine McVie wrote this song about the band's drummer, Mick Fleetwood. The band was going through a lot of turmoil, as Christine and John McVie were having relationship issues as were Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. Fleetwood was key in keeping the band together, which is why he is called "Daddy" in this song. author unknown
Im a Dad , to my 2-girls, Dad mite have treats, he mite have no treats They come running, I love you girls with everything that I am. But a woman is the bridge from heaven to earth, for every man to walk is earth must pass threw a woman
You are right about about "Daddy" being a reference to a lover or spouse. "Everything you do is just alright and I can't walk away from you baby if I tried". This verse proves it. Who would ever refer to her father as baby?
I had one, lost him, found him again, didn't fully appreciate him, came to understand him as a profound gift and teacher in my life, helped him extend his life, and finally held the door while his soul left this room. Sometimes the lesson is that absense of one is the other. Forgive me...
The Rumours album had so many great songs that could have easily been released as hits in their own right. Christine's Oh Daddy is one of those songs.
Rumors is timeless. It well always be the best album made. The music, the lyrics, the passion can't be matched then , now or in the future. What was done can never be done again.
fear, confusion, love, hatred. the tacky, microwaveable, pre-packaged sequel to the trinity, the aftermath of which is only a day's wage away. certain things in life are, others might have been, and the rest floats past on a bed of feeling and lack thereof. great song.
i think it means that when all the hype dies down, you are left with a mediocre shell of what you once had, and are seeking ways to get out of it or improve it in some way, wishing you had done things differently but at the end of the day are pretty resigned to the whole thing. but if you do make it into a song, i want royalties godammit! lol
That's goddam profound...never realized it before but you're totally right about that. Freakadocious (= So damn freaky as to make one docile with stupification)
I remember this song as a teenager. I was raised by my father and was really close to him. Every time I did something that hurt him I cried when I heard this song.
I have been listening to this this song for over 30 years and it still moves me. Great music is simply timeless. I have been waiting for this version of "Oh Daddy" to show up. This is my favorite Fleetwood Mac song in front of "Landslide" and "Gold Dust Woman". If I can make you see if there was ever a fool around for this music yes it's got to me.
true legend...wow....

This song is so haunting, the music, her voice. Gonna go see Fleetwood Mac in March, but it sucks that she won't be there.
